I think part of the issue is it’s confusing people to call ChatGPT et al AI, because it simply isn’t that. To be most generous, it may be called “limited AI”, but even then I side-eye that term. It’s basically a large language model (LLM). I think it can be used as an aide, if one understands that.

Wrong. In its quest to always please you, it will question you, disagree with you and challenge you IF you respond positively when it first does so, or you instruct it. If a person uses AI then they should understand the consequences of said use. But heck, people repost information on social media without confirming the facts or truth. Imagine if we were legally liable for every repost, retweet, or restack we made. We’d all be in court.

But the AI wouldn't be reposting anything, the text is being generated by the AI itself, and presenting that text as its own. So yes or no, do you accept full legal responsibility for whatever text it generates? Because I am responsible for the text that I generate, with my brain.

Oh wait… I think I get what social stories are. Simple, accessible stories where there is a moral, where children can confront fears from the real world in a safe way, to prepare them to react to social situations? Well, it’s been there for centuries. Except we were calling them tales.

I don't think I've ever got a good answer out of any of them, and trying to figure out which of its 'facts' are just made up is a pain. But why promote the use of a tool that will eventually take over your job? (albeit badly)

nzall.bsky.social @nzall.bsky.social

One of the things that development teams around the world are figuring out now is that even with AI, you still need experienced developers who know what questions to ask the AI and how to interpret the answers into a workable solution. Just randomly copy/pasting things just won't cut it.

apr 16, 2025, 6:09 pm • 1 0 • view

DogDoor4 @dogdoor4.bsky.social

Developers will be incentivised to use AI code because it's quicker. From a management perspective, there's no difference between a dev writing code they don't understand or an AI doing it. But with no one who understands how or why it works, they'll become more reliant on AI to debug and update it.

apr 16, 2025, 7:11 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
nzall.bsky.social @nzall.bsky.social

Devs who don't understand the code they're writing are terrible devs. It is borderline impossible, even, to give AI prompts to fix code you don't understand yourself. You won't know what the "fix" will do or whether it'll work. A dev who is nothing without AI shouldn't have it until they're not.

apr 16, 2025, 9:04 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
DogDoor4 @dogdoor4.bsky.social

A dev who needs AI at all isn't a very good dev. But that's the problem, only about 10% of devs are good, 30% are ok, 30% are crap but might improve, and the rest have chosen the wrong career. Good devs are out numbered. To the rest, AI will level the playing field - downwards.

apr 16, 2025, 10:34 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
nzall.bsky.social @nzall.bsky.social

Would you say the same of a dev who uses documentation? Stack Overflow (useless as that site might have become lately)? Google? an IDE? All those things are standard tools in a developer's toolset, and the only real difference is that AI is just newer and more controversial.

Not at all comparable. Documentation is for architecture and syntax. AI will soon be taking over the logic. I like my job. I create elegant logical structures in my perfect universe of 1s and 0s. Within the next 5 years, a lot of that will be taken away.

Here's my thing: I'm a frontend developer. I like writing the HTML, Javascript and Java code that's part of my code, but I'm bad at CSS. I usually ask our web designer to do that stuff. With ChatGPT, I can ask the AI "here's my HTML and CSS, how do I get it to do X?" without interrupting coworkers.

apr 19, 2025, 1:20 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
nzall.bsky.social @nzall.bsky.social

Like, the stuff I ask usually isn't explained in documentation or Google, and gets your questions closed on Stack Overflow because of their overbearing content moderation policy. I can get my work out the door faster just by asking AI targeted questions, where before I'd need copious experimenting.

AI as a substitute further isolates people from real connections. A journal is a better confidant because at least you can find human-designed prompts to explore your own feelings. There are so many ways to look for connections if you're lacking them. Avoidant isolation isn't one of them.

There's AI and then there's AI. As I commented some while back elsewhere: *ITERATIVE* AI, which is widely used in scientific - notably medical - research - is astounding and has already helped produce leapfrog advances in knowledge. *GENERATIVE* AI, on the other hand, is just plain evil.

apr 17, 2025, 2:36 pm • 4 0 • view

JoeA64 @joea64.bsky.social

The key difference is that iterative AI, also sometimes called traditional or predictive AI, uses defined rules and algorithms to analyze pre-existing data/information, and generative AI tries to create *new* content from existing data.

It depends on what you're asking. My hospital did an informal study of it as a tool to explain therapy concepts and aid with cognitive distortions, since patients were already using it. They found that it was trained on many of the same manuals, described them accurately. It was also great at…

…identifying cognitive distortions and balanced thoughts. Their conclusion was that, while they would continue to not recommend it, they didn't feel the need to discourage its use as an aid for therapy homework. It varies greatly by task/user input. But there's a difference between use & reliance.

And it's still on the topic YOU chose. An AI is never going to butt into your ten minute monologue on your pet topic and say "um, my dad died yesterday, can we talk about that instead?" And the AI doesn't know how your friends are doing if you don't think to ask them.

I say this as a possibly autistic person who struggles with this stuff. The only real cure is practice, practice, practice, with kind and tolerant people. I make a real effort to keep these skills up because having friends is important to me and a robot will never be a substitute.

But your assumption is that people are using it as a SUBSTITUTE and not a supplement. You can’t force kind and tolerant people into your life to provide that. Not everyone is willing to give feedback. Also, the cure isn’t practice, it’s SKILLED PRACTICE. Practicing badly teaches you bad habits.

Again, it is pretty spectacular that people who have access (I don’t have portable access) can dash into the hall or bathroom for feedback, to go out and execute it immediately. The tool has potential and current uses, but they won’t develop energy efficiency without demand to keep it. Nor improve.

I hope you walk the walk you talk. No voice assistants, no video games, owned a Tomochichi, or a pet rock. This is what people do. Anthropomorphize things. Some people do take it to an extreme. Not much to be done. 🤷‍♂️ Remember that time in that popular book a man talked to a bush? Me too...

Videogame usually stimulates critical thinking and your reflexes and you need to actively engage with it and it's also a way to build community, idk what a tomochichi is, a pet rock demands a certain level of creativity because it can't respond on their own. Those are not compared to AI chat

You've missed the point of my comment. Humans, I think because we are creative, anthropomorphize things. We do it to game characters, rocks, cars etc. This is why people are treating LLMs as friends or therapists as noted by the OP.

My pet rock doesn't use a data center that'll use more water than Denmark by 2027.

Okay, the subject was anthropomorphizing of things. Datacenter water use isn't really on subject. We can talk about that too. Wait until you find out this service runs in one of those. Or the bank. Or the Microsoft 365 darn near every business uses these days. Or every app on your phone...

If you're referring to datacenters, generativeAI (ChatGPT) uses significantly more water. Because it is demanding. If you're referring to ChatGPT, the enshittification is pretty rampant. Big corp constantly implementing it everywhere you look. Hence to why it is in fact a problem.

Y’know I certainly hope people like ^ this guy are just grifting, ‘cause the alternative is this dude’s got five years longer in the industry than I do and truly doesn’t understand the difference.

Do you even know what the word grift means? How do I earn money illicitly from this conversation? In terms of datacenters, maybe check some historic data. Datacenter build outs were already a hockey stick. If not LLMs then something else. General direction industry is heading. I didn't build them.

I’m not arguing the point about DC buildouts, you’re absolutely correct; it’s indicative of the poison in the industry as a whole, of which this is the currently worst source. You can propagate it or actually still work for *people*, not to inflate investment balloons, y’know, like a grift would do.

There's always going to be a worst source, though. Like I said if not LLMs something else. I just think it's not useful to be mad about a thing that ultimately drives most things in our lives these days. More useful to positively support things that make those things less bad...

...I, for one, advocate for self-hosting and personal data sovereignty. I run my own LLMs in my own machine at home. I hope people more sciency than me are working on ways to make those big data centers less resource intensive.

The danger of people doing that is incredibly high. From just basic personal data risks, to all sorts of other concerns. And people don’t understand. They call me crazy and paranoid.
