How much did you pay for a cheap, bog standard EV? I think this might be the problem. If it's on par with a diesel/petrol equipment or cheaper, people might buy it. At the moment they're too expensive for the ordinary person.

I was in the market for a 4 to 5 year old car for about £10k earlier this year. Wanted a load lugger, Dad tip run duties, kids bikes with seats down, dog etc Set params on Autotrader and MG5 kept popping up. Drove, bough, had for 4 months, cost for year to do my 6-7k miles is likely less than £300

I did the same a few years ago and opted for a diesel. The mileage I was doing I needed to be able to get there with no range anxiety. I was spending £200pm on fuel. I don't spend that anymore as I cycle but we have three cars in our family. I love the idea of an EV.

Range anxiety is something people have when they’ve never driven an EV. Various companies do monthly rentals and that’ll convert folks real quick. Worked on my “EVs wouldn’t work for us” parents. Making kids breath in my NOx gives me far worse anxiety. www.mumsforlungs.org/our-campaign...

Two different people in our family currently looking for an under 5K run around. Nissan Leaf keeps coming out top. Doing an average journey of 5miles a day with an 80 to 100 mile range, no problem.

Not only that but because they are so expensive the government thinks they must therefor be "luxury" and hammers you in tax

EVs are generally cheaper these days when you consider all costs involved, unless you get a silly SUV or a Tesla for some reason. www.motorfinity.uk/blog/ev-ice/#1

It’s borrowed from parents, but it’s about the same as their bog standard second hand petrol car they’re getting rid of. They, like 97% of the UK, get their cars on finance so the tag price is irrelevant. The monthly payments are lower due to cheaper fuel and reduced maintenance costs. 👍🏼

I lease mine as part of my role. Costs me about £300/mo all in. You can get similar from Octopus EV, with free charger install. Electric costs pennies. You'll do well to spend more than £20/mo on electric if you have their off peak rates. New car, service and maintenance included. Bargain.

Also incredibly fun and easy to drive. Faster than most ICE cars and has a lot of useful driving aids.

Are you limited with the mileage? I spend the same as you on the car and fuel. But I will own my car and will drive it for years. It's certainly very interesting.

Yes there is a mileage limit which returns the pricing to similar to running an ICE car when I go over 24k miles for the 3 year lease (13p a mile) I worked it out if I did 6k over it's like running a 180mpg car for 30k miles I agree it's a good debate to have
