Yeah this it is hetero-erotica at its finest
Yeah this it is hetero-erotica at its finest
💯 have never wanted a man with that physique in my life and don’t know anyone who does.
I agree, but there is at least one exception: Magic Mike.
Magic Mike isn't really about the bodies, though. It's about the focus on pleasing women.
Excellent point. In my case, as male, I wasn't the main target of the movie, but still, it moved something in me. I kind of felt my male-gaze tingling with all that sexiness.
Yeah. Muscle bound guys says “dumb as a bag of rocks” and “possible murderer.” Some definition is nice. But…most male upper body photos are for other body builders or gay guys.
Trying to explain objectification to a friend "But there are buff guys for women" Those are for men too Pointless, just a frowning bluescreen
And have time to hang out with you!
Why in the world would I lust after a man whose attention to his looks and hours in the gym inspire me to compare myself unfavorably to him? Exhausting. I bet they have to eat a carefully monitored diet too, what a drag.
Specifically gay men. We created the gym-body culture and straight men followed the trend we set maybe unaware of the origin. You know kinda like Trump dancing to YMCA by the Village People.
Trump choosing Macho Macho Man as his walk on music unironically is probably the funniest shít ever lol
Most women are fine with a guy's appearance as long as he's a healthy weight, and not a fat greasy neckbeard.
Toast guy (or guys) any day of the week!
I prefer to rest my head on pillows rather than rocks.
Score one for us fat guys
Female gaze. Partly (maybe largely?) due to his personality as well as looks.
Agree! I didn’t really find him particularly attractive until I started reading things about him and watching him in interviews - I don’t even think I know what his body looks like… wasn’t his butt in a scene at some point? 🤷 But annnywayyyeee, I have seen the light! Hehe
Yes, where personality and looks meet! Their facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, etc. That accounts for so much more attractiveness than their jawline.
Does Pedro use they/them? I never heard of that but a quick search said he uses he/him.
I said "they" because I'm making a broad statement about what makes people attractive in general, and Pedro is just one example "They" refers to "people in general," not Pedro
Ah gotcha
Wasn’t there a running gag in the movie about the girls freaking out about sixpack abs?
It's not really about physique, it's about why the image exists. The macho Wolverine photo exists for the same reason renaissance paintings of seductive nude women exist--to satisfy the gaze of men.
The male body builder physique is not particularly liked by women. It reminds me of a cross between grisly anatomy drawings, and those hilarious paintings of oddly square shaped cattle from the 18th and 19th centuries.
MERL has entered the chat bsky.app/profile/them...
Good old MERL!
Plus their normal-sized heads just look weirdly tiny on top of all the exaggerated muscle.
I don't find either of these men attractive! They both scream 'Look at me, Look at me!' and that turns me off. They look like they care more about how they look than what's in their heart. Maybe they are not selfish but this much muscle reeks of someone prioritizing looks over health or good deeds.
to be fair though, it does actually have a negative effect. on the actors. Hugh has gone on record saying that he hated doing the shirtless scenes for wolverine because each time they made him dehydrate severely until near the point of hospital
I never understood that. Have you seen the photos of him at the beach year or two after this movie was made? Bulking up for a super hero movie is one thing but he looks so much better when he was properly hydrated.
The photo in question. Turns out was in 2012 so He was likely bulked up for this movie but sense he wasn't dehydrated himself yet. He look so much better then he does in the movie.
oh yeah, for sure, but they want that big muscly veiny uber strong man look to give comic 'insane' strength vibes
Then just do what they did for 300 and use make up to make the muscle look extremely defined. No one's going to notice.
Like yea sure they still had to go threw a crazy gym routine no doubt. But to make there bodys have that shreded comic book greek god look. You can see on the abs. That's fake shadowing to make there body's look extremely defined.
even chris hemsworth talked in an interview about how he hated having a 6 pack because of what it took to maintain it, like, once you got there, it only lasted a few days unless you kept up the routine.
Is that lady just… … can we come up with a fun term for that in the vein of “hanging brain?” I like “hanging brain,” and I want one for boobs.
Hilariously, my favorite example of this was a Tumblr post that showed photos of Jackman on the cover of Men's Health (looking like this) and on the cover of Good Housekeeping (wearing a snuggly blue sweater and holding a cat).
I think of that post every time this discourse arises again
it was such a perfect example!
A STACK??
A tower of toast. If it’s French toast, the base must be wide and the top eiffen tiny. If it’s Italian bread, it’s gotta lean a little to the side.
If it’s American then it should just be a fat stack
Texas toast is absurdly thick - so point made! LOL
I'm confused as to what you think the correct amount of toast is then?
A parliament of toast
I love it
💪👍😆
yeah women don't really want to be afraid of their partners
So true!
Similarly fashion and heroin chic in the 90s had nothing to do with men. It was all about women.
Except it wasn't. Women weren't the main driver behind it. The driver was the fashion industry which was dominated by men.
The consumers of the content drove it. Same as superheroes for men.
What content? What was it that women were consuming that drove it? It was mostly connected to the music industry and content marketed at men.
Fashion magazines, the relentless pile of so called women’s mags that piled up over the decades from Vogue to Cosmopolitan to People to Teen to Glamour and dozens more.
Except they weren't where it started. Blaming fashion magazines when it started outside of them is just lazy thinking.
The general public knew nothing about ‘fashion’ until it was sold to them by mainstream shows and magazines. That’s simplistic thinking.
These mags were primarily written by, about and for women. The crappy ‘men’s’ mags of this period had little to do with fashion and were more like sports rags crossed with page six from British tabloids.
Frankly find both revolting in every way.
💯
This guy was once a romantic icon.
And shacked up with Caroline Bouquet for *years*.
Men oriented magazine vs women oriented one... This is the male gaze 100%
100%
Thought of this image *immediately*.
I also thought of that image XD
I just want to snuggle into that pullover 😂
I'm just gonna say it... GET YOURSELF A MAN THAT CAN DO BOTH. 🥵🥵🥵
Thank you I scrolled down so far looking for this because it was amazing to me that they chose that wolverine image given how ubiquitous this comparison was at the time in spaces I was in.
You could literally engrave your response onto a drill bit and power it into his skull, and this guy would refuse to accept the truth of what you're saying.
All he'd get would be "YOU CALLING ME GAY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"
Men really know nothing about women. Shame.
Straight men, yeah
I want a guy who will understand that the way to my heart involves cheese and chocolate. Like my husband.
Agreed. This week he brought me Russian chocolate just because.
I'm built like they made Reacher out of plastic bags full of beer and hamburgers instead of muscles and it's never been a problem for me. Being an incel remains a skill issue
😂
Smart is sexy from any perspective, IMHO ...🤓
The “female gaze” according to No room for wokeness and other jackasses is literally just characters being the most hypermasculine manly man man man to ever man as determined by the most rigidly patriarchal standards ever.
All of which are pretty much exclusively put into place, and dogmatically encouraged by, you guessed it: MEN.
Maaaaan!
The obsession with juicing Hollywood with steroids is so stupid in terms of realistic body image goals. What is even more stupid tho is that so many people don’t realize it.
Those pro trainers who dehydrate their clients before shoots… to firm up. Want that look? Work out. Abstain from water. 2-3 days. FFS! Do NOT do that!
In fact, women know that men built like that are only interested in their own gaze via the mirror, it's a for of onanism, which is a form of sexuality I guess, but not the one a woman would seek from a man.
This is the best thread.
Andre the Giant never looked like this.
Nor did Tom Cruise
give my the personality of Robin Williams & Gene Wilder any day
Or Stephen Colbert.
I don't find him that funny to be honest. that might be because I'm Aussie and have different humour.
To each her own….
fair 😁
In my experience, that's nonsense.
In your experience as a woman?
Hugh didn’t even drink water before those scenes so he could look vascular. I don’t know who told him that veins are hot, but eww… have a drink sweetie.
They might be to a phlebotomist 😂
These actors have repeatedly told people NOT to do this as it’s not only grueling but also unhealthy. Yet men keep sharing the photos, adding to the unrealistic expectations for young boys.😖 fandomwire.com/dont-do-this...
He never needed to do that for the movie 🤷🏻♀️ I remember an interview where he said he had extreme headaches all day from dehydration. It’s ridiculous. Not worth it. He would have looked great regardless. The comics weren’t drawn to be a veiny mutant anyway.
True story. I’m going to be honest. I’m not interested in any man who looks like he spends more time getting dressed than I do 🤷🏻♀️
Avoid you, got it
😂😂😂
I just blocked that dude, so he got his wish! 🤣
Ladies, I own a Breville toaster with the “A Bit More” button. Line forms over here.* * Yes, right behind my wife.
That’s a great toaster! It’s been first on the list if our current one ever dies.
Same! Ours is pretty old at this point and if/when it goes to the Great Kitchen In The Sky we’ll just get as close to the same one. It’s relatively pricy but it actually works properly. A cheap toaster is just wasted money.
The bar is so low I was just excited about a man who knew what setting to use for his toast with out asking me for directions…
A what button? I mean, you had me at Breville toaster. I bet your bagels are on point.
Your toast comes out and it’s not quite right so you just hit… “A Bit More”! That way you can “undertoast” deliberately then nudge it up bit by bit. We had literally stopped buying toasters because apparently toasting technology had been forgotten since our childhood!
And yes bagels are amazing with this thing as well. Pretty much always exactly how you want them, however that is. https://www.rtings.com/toaster/reviews/breville/the-a-bit-more-2-slice
It's true. Women look at the person inside and not the surface. It's value over muscle.
Oh, please. Some women are socialized into looking for "a good provider". That said, as the OP points out, it's more other men who get really excited by super-hard bodies.
Yes. All male audiences drove the success of this picture, for sure. Combined Worldwide Gross: Over $346 million.
"And the vulnerability."
It was the bodies AND the self-mockery AND the vulnerability. But by all means keep on with your view that women prioritize. big muscles in a man as much as other men do.
Ahuh.
Danny’s just mad because they looked at him inside and out and found nothing redeemable whatsoever.
Life is long and hard kiddo, but there’s probably a tall tree and a short rope nearby.
That’s funny because rich assholes are the opposite of my type.
Oh, thanks for seeing the humor in the my little joke! "That's funny" always welcomed!
Ladies! Ladies! Look out: we've got a master comedian in the thread!
That would be like sleeping next to a brick wall. No thanks.
Also to look like this you have to be so boring and so drugged up you’d be insanely off putting as a partner.
Yes. He's called the Cinnamon Roll hero in the romance genre.
This humble glacier is unfamiliar with that term. What does it mean?
The Cinnamon Roll hero is kind, generous, sweet, empathetic, and an equal partner. He's no pushover. He'll stand his ground and/or sacrifice when needed. He may or may not have a tough exterior, but he's soft and squishy on the inside.
Urban Dictionary: Cinnamon Roll share.google/rc7g4r11fdDx...
Big & tough on the outside; sweet on the inside.
You wanna talk about REAL female gaze. Read ANY Nightwing comic. Anytime that man is drawn, all that I hear is every comic fan screaming "I WANT THAT TWINK DESTROYED!"
We like to see them in nice clothes too.
I made sure I could take my partners on if anything went south and got physical
That's a relief because I'm terrible at crunches but -y'all- I got these toaster settings juuuuuuuuust right
That’s my kind of crunchy!
Oh no not the movie (it's so good)
Swoon ❤️❤️❤️
Mr Darcy who knows how to use power tools is my dream
He did redeem himself with this walk.
This moment inspires a swoon every time. Thank you.
Jeremy Northam is my favourite Mr. Darcy but the one in the Keira Knightley movie wasn't bad.
He played Mr. Knightly in Emma, not Mr. Darcy, but yes, he was also wonderful and I saw that Sandra Bullock movie The Net way too many times just because he was in it.
Oh me too. I watched The Net so many times. He is also in a movie with Kate Beckinsale, I forget the name, he was great in that also. I always thought he was gorgeous.
I am so stupid. Yes he did. I got confused again. Then yes that dude from the Keira Knightley movie is the best one. Thank you. Sometimes my brain dies. I went shopping today and forgot my debit card and had to go home and get it.
I dropped my card last week while trying to pay and juggle my kids’ rapidly melting ice cream cones, and someone was actually kind enough to turn it in to the cashier!
That was very nice of them. Thank goodness there are still good people out there.
This exactly. I keep saying P&P is having a rennassiance in reaction to the incel movement. The fantasy of Mr. Darcy is not the fantasy of a rich man, it's the fantasy of a man who *listens*, who can get his ego out of the way and take critical feedback.
And who ultimately appreciates a woman who speaks her mind.
And the incels themselves are Mr. Collins, and they can’t handle the fact that Charlotte has other options now.
LOL THIS The last time I saw P&P I had a similar thought about Collins as incel, but the extra insight that "Charlotte has other options now" is absolutely on point
Maybe he does listen but the whole situation reminds me very much of the same old fairy tales pattern present in , e.g., Cinderella and his Prince Charming, Pretty Woman, etc.
Care to elaborate? I'm not sure if you mean the wealth thing or something else.
Didn't make progress with his love, examined his behavior, changed? HAWT
Exactly!!!
www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id...
Swooning for Darcy!
Soooo much.
He's sooo swoony ! My mum is totally crazy about him hahah
My absolute favorite Darcy! 🥰
💯
Yep!
Yuummmmm...yes.
This one. This. Yep.
I mean do we have to choose? Why not both 🥰
I once had a very, very long MRI for which they told me to bring a dvd because they had goggles, so, I brought the only one I had. Turns out, you can't hear any dialog over the machine noises, which how I realized it's a very static piece of film--just people standing there talking to each other.
Not much I could do but just wait for Darcy good parts. You know the ones I mean. 😉
Best Darcy, hands down. This scene makes my heart race every time.
So many scenes! I saw it the first time round. I was single then and a dejected but this lifted me up!
Check out the 1980 (?) BBC miniseries with David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy and the radiant Elizabeth Garvie as Eliza Bennett. He plays the stern, awkward snob with a hidden soft heart perfectly. The understated, spare production is peerless.
What about Olivier as Darcy? He and Greer Garson were magic. This movie introduced me to Jane Austen. God bless TCU. I was too cheap to rent the BBC 1996 but thanks to peacock I've watched it 8 times. So yeah I like this one too
Is it available on Britbox?
I believe it is on Brit Box as well
I don't have BritBox but every time I hear about something else good that is only available on BritBox I think about getting a subscription.
It is on TUBI TV non-subscription
I watched it today & loved Rintoul's transformation from uptight Darcy to openhearted Darcy. Will definitely watch it again after a while for more details. Thanks again for telling me it was available on Tubi. Interestingly, when the last episode ended, Tubi autoplayed Part One of P&P with Firth!
Thanks, Martha A! I may check it out as soon as tomorrow!!!
Agree—it’s my favorite. Love the verve the actors playing the other sisters bring to their parts, too. Mary!
This was my first Darcy. I don't know if anyone ever gets over their first Darcy!
You are so right. I have never watched any of the films. Why tamper with perfection?
Ok well there we disagree—I’m always ready for adaptations!
The winner!
After he tells Caroline Bingley off and leaves the room with a smirk....CANDLE DROP!
That whole production, all, what, six hours of it, and how many screen seconds are there of the leads actually looking at each other like they care about each other? But they make them count!
Much nicer than the Darcy in the book
This 100%
Definitely the right Darcy!!
Also YES. There is room for both in our hearts
I concur!
Most of my women friends say it's this
This is 99% correct. He's still a cop, though, and we know the stats.
He keeps talking lovingly about his wife in every chapter, tho. If he's an abuser, he's got me fooled
That wife captained a starship!
OK, I want this crossover.
No
Or this.
This is the only thing worth commenting on right now, so I’ll just entertain myself by posting more examples.
Too young for me.. 😊
But still pretty.
Absolutely - even at his current age!
My ex was obsessed with this man.
Also
I started to make a joke about Wolverine doing the Darcy hand flex, but then I figured someone on the internet had made the joke already. I googled and found this. Not what I was looking for, but weirdly better?
😄😄😄
"Snikt", indeed!
This is everything i never knew I needed.
Alt-text: Wolverine gazes longingly at framed pic of Darcy hand flex.
I was so upset when he won wayco
You got that right.
Toast would be soggy
😄😄😄
This is just as reductive.
And it’s more about how he treats the women, not how he looks.
Exactly I didn't like his looks at the start of the movie. Must confess I was a bit swooney at the end. It's all in the character work!
Ah, but isn't this the whole issue? The perception of personality that goes with these body types? And that (perhaps) women prefer the personality of Darcy, rather than egocentric action heroes? Whereas men think of a set personality, and then think, what body would women prefer most with it?
Darcy was a superhero (in my mind) who saved the Bennets from ruin, but he did it in a quiet way rather than in a public, physical battle. His display of chivalry was far sexier and admirable than the ones the Marvel/DC men display.
And that’s what women like. Did you se that last Thor how they made him all soft? That was a “superhero chick flick.” They made that one for the moms.
Funny, I thought that one was just badly written. It was too silly, too dumb. Darcy and Lizzy spar with wit.
Yeah. Felt like it was catering to single moms. I couldn’t even sit through the whole thing.
As someone with a certain body type (think slim endurance athlete, compared to muscular gym bro type), in my experience when I was young & single, my body type wasn't the one that women flocked to.
And of course my personality is perfect, lol
Mathew McFadden will always be my Mister Darcy. 💜🩷💙
biting_my_lip.jpg
👍
Not gonna lie...not attracted to iron-pumping hulks, but this other-worldly human who regaled us while strutting down Broadway and West End boulevards...totally got to me🙄
Yesssss. That man in that movie was so delicious.
Miss that guy. One of the greatest movie villains ever.
Eh.
when I saw this in a theater, the entire audience GASPED at this scene. 🥰
Ok keep in mind I'm on my phone but i thought that was Philomena Cunk for a second
1000%
Very much so.
Nothing beats a good Jane Austen male protagonist!
I was unabashedly attracted to John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons. I'll take historical costumes over gigantic muscles any day.
In the original stage play the part was played by Alan Rickman, and I will forever be bitter that Malkovich got the screen role.
He’s ridiculously sexy in this and I don’t normally find him attractive
I know! I told my daughter she had to watch this because he was what I consider the definition of "attractive" to be--maybe not conventionally handsome but his aura, his personality just attracted you like a magnet. He became sexy--even though the character was an awful human being.
watched this movie 4 times in cinema and countless, ever since
Yes.
This this this!!!
The dude from death at a funeral?
One of my fav movies of all time. Absolutely love this version of P&P and Mr Darcy ❤️ Thankfully my husband knows this and whenever I’m sad he will put it on for me and watch it with me to cheer me up, without even me asking.
YES! PLEASE SEND MORE
i know i’m in love with that coat.
This does nothing for me. Show me your heart, brains, and sense of humor.
I prefer my men with breasts and a vagina. 😂
I think that's the female gays.
A butch lesbian is a joy. Gruff, tough, and owns a heart softer than the yolk of her sunny-side-up eggs. 🥰
My wife was a pro wrestler back when we were in high school. She is tall, ripped and can be EXTREMELY intimidating when she sets her mind to it. She also catches spiders in the house and turns them loose outside because she knows killing them will make me cry.
I thought this about Sylvester Stallone & Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 80s. I've never met a woman who wants to look at Stallone on screen but plenty of men do.
And women weren’t very interested I looking at Schwarzenegger until he started to do things like “Twins” and “Kindergarten Cop”.
Every guy I've ever known that looked like that is only into himself and flexing his ego around other guys 🙄
Exactly—and they don’t care about pleasing you in bed
Nope. It's always about them
Right! I know zero women who find this attractive. Men... sure... this look appeals way more to the gay male gaze.
Lol. Most of them turned out to be Bi on the DL. No issue with being Bi but don't lie & hide it from your partner
I never have. My ex-wife freaked when I told her I was trans. I just had to say "you haven't been paying much attention, have you?"
Reports are that some of the actors who look like that are actually pretty OK, but in their case, they are literally creating that kind of body as a business decision. They are not doing it for their own ego.
Agreed. It's literally part of the job for the role they're playing
It immediately brings to mind Patrick Bateman flexing at himself in the mirror, lol
Who wants to break it to them that it’s the guys checking them out still?
💯
as a masc-leaning enby, I do think Reacher is pretty hot, but in a gay way
also the character seems like a genuinely good guy, without a lot of the toxic masculinity that characters of the type usually suffer from, and the actor seems like a very pleasant, sort of goofy, person
Absolutely, it's his personality that helps overlook the beefcakeness
I always hear men talk about hot bod men in movies which I think is weird. The women say things like “He had a pimple on his back” and then proceed to discuss why Seth Rogan’s character in Platonic is the perfect man 🙂
Imma just say: Pedro Pascal. He is female gaze
The only time a muscled up character was given "The Female Gaze" treatment (that I can remember tbf) in my lifetime was George of the Jungle and the whole thing was lampshaded in a very self aware way by the movie itself. youtu.be/3qRzoz-CqTY?...
There has been a lot written about the Jamie Fraser character in the ‘Outlander’ series and the direction, which was definitely catering to the female gaze - as were the massive books which served as source material.
Okay, fine, I will watch Outlander! 💚🫣
Big trigger warning, especially (but not limited to) the end of the first season.
George’s personality was also the opposite of the “alpha” male types male writers and male directors usually put into their films. Because of the source material they couldn’t really get around it.
I think the scene where Ape teaches him the ~art of seduction~ is really emblematic of this.
Also the scene where he persuades Ursula to dance. Kind, funny, supportive, empathetic, “No one here to be embarrassed. Only George.”
There was definitely a reason teenage me rewound and replayed that scene so many times the tape warped…..
I had forgotten about that scene. George is so pure ❤️
guys like this always look ridiculous when they're not posing because they can't put their arms down
it's like they are always carrying invisible luggage
Give me Alan Rickman any day over vein popping muscle heads
I realized I had matured when Pitt & Depp (pre-abuse awareness) stopped being sexy & Rickman, Harvey Keitel & Liam Neeson became my standard. Clooney & Denzel are, of course, timeless & ageless. But I have a hard time enjoying Clooney films knowing he hangs out w/ abusers.
Thank you
Be still my beating trousers!
His beautiful voice and his sensitivity.
Yesssss, dammit
I was looking for the Sheriff of Nottingham GIF with the sword to quote post it with "that's not a bod; this is a bod" but that GIF is unfindable here? that crush began almost 35 years ago.
This one? tenor.com/U7pl.gif
oh yes! that one. all time favorite, but there are so many to choose from!
I suppose I could have used this video, but I wanted to make a Crocodile Dundee joke. www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4-g...
I miss him so much 💔
🌻👏his gaze & that voice….a voice alone could get me every time😍😊
I love watching Reacher with my spouse, but I call the one on the right "Bubbles" because he looks like a bunch of bowling balls stuffed into a man skin, which seems... uncomfortable. Forget stacks of buttered toast. My man makes burgers with entire grilled cheese sandwiches for buns.
It's interesting that the ideal male among males is now soaked in HGH, Tren, etc. The actor on the right openly admits he juices. 30% of men (30-50 age group, I recall) dye their hair. Male cosmetic surgery is on an exponential rise. This isn't about attracting women. It's a crisis of masculinity.
They don't even like women. Or themselves.
He doesn't just admit to it, he says it's basically a requirement to play these kinds of roles. Hollywood these days is pulling a Vince McMahon when it comes to action stars. Juice it up or don't bother auditioning.
I guess it's hard to deny it when you have buttocks on your shoulders
i don't judge, do to your own body what makes you feel good. If that's gear, go for it, be as safe as you can and know what you're getting yourself in for in long term health risks, and how to mitigate them. The shameful part is when it's being forced on you as part of a job.
It should actually be a big scandal. All the Marvel actors and most guys playing these types of action roles are all put on PEDs and required to work out and eat very little plus being dehydrated. It's gross and unethical to make an actor do this but nobody is making it an issue.
All of that gender affirming care ...
Exactly
Of course. Women don't want men who are good looking. Everybody knows that. Women want men with a sense of humor. Women would walk right over Tom Selleck just to get to Buddy Hackett.
Maybe not Buddy Hackett, but Danny Kaye, Gene Wilder, or Harold Ramis.
Two of those three maybe, but if you look at the record I think you'll find that Danny Kaye was a real SOB.
Just had this conversation- would choose Fred Armisen over Tom Brady any day of the week and twice in Sundays
Might as well let Fred know. There's not a lot of competition for him.
I think he was with Natasha Lyonne for awhile
BAH! Married to Riki Lindhomme
Hugh Grant, oh yes. Swoon. Jason Momoa, hell no. Gross.
That's a real stretch. But I get what you're saying. In my lifetime, long ago I lived in Hawaii when Selleck was all the rage. Believe me...I wanted to walk thru fire to see him. But he was just handsome...not some drug induced mental gym rat who thought he was Adonis.
A lot of women want both and that’s okay. What women are saying is that a lot don’t find the extreme muscle look attractive and that looks aren’t everything.
My looks sure aren't.
I enjoy being and looking fit, but I've always been well aware of whose gaze I've been doing it for (mine). My wife could give three shits 😂 That being said, I still eat whatever I want, just in moderation. And I make sure that my everyday life is getting more attention than the working out.
Every woman I know loves Sean Astin ♡
SAMWISE!!! Who doesn't want their very own Samwise?!
Even those swooning over Legolas or Aragorn weren't doing do because of jacked-shirtless forms.
AND Winona’s wonderful wise and brave boyfriend in S2 of Stranger Things. I cried when he died!
Me too! Bob Newby,Superhero ♡
He’s perfection.
Meeeeeehhhh. Not into him.
The confidence and not needing other men's approval...🔥🔥🔥
You know that isn't the female gaze because otherwise there wouldn't have been such a fuss over Jonathan Bailey's "slutty glasses" in Jurassic Park.
I had never seen him before that movie and was so disappointed when I looked him up and found out he doesn't wear those glasses in real life. He's so much more attractive with them on.
Jonathan Bailey is in the new Jurassic Park?? 👀👀
Yep! He also played clarinet in the orchestra for the soundtrack.
meanwhile, me, who can eat a stack of buttered toast and not gain a pound anywhere on my body:
Try sharing the toast
The female gaze: the video youtu.be/SxVNOnPyvIU?...
Wow! Women are complicated human beings. Imagine that!
The female gaze
Yes!!! 🙌🏻
This is sooo gay! 😂🤣🏳️🌈
Correct.
This is the kind of guy my personal female gaze finds most attractive, but I'm also pretty gay so this may not be useful data
Yep, still made for a male gaze. Something the OC likely has a thimbleful of knowledge about.
I've heard Brendan Frasier as George in George of the Jungle as meeting the criteria.
I’d say he’s the limit. Anything that’s more bulky and dehydrated than that hot himbo is clearly aimed at appealing to what men think is hot.
*Dreamy sigh*
I was thirteen when that movie came out and let me tell you, I had some feelings.
Frankly, I’d still take beefy Brendan now!!
I was in elementary school and I even knew then that Branden Fraser was a hottie. I’m not even sure it was the body but his hair and eyes and silliness.
I think the earnestness and sweetness of the character (and of pretty much any Brendan Fraser character) was a huge part of it.
Brendan Fraser is gorgeous, and one of very few with whom I'd seriously consider - JUST consider, not accept - spending the night. SO: "I'm straight, love, and I'd even consider having Brendan Fraser spend the night!" 😂
You call that a knife, this is a knife! (Butter knife)
Loki was more popular with the ladies than Thor... That's the female gaze right there. Rather have a cheeky spindly looking guy than beefcake MANNN.
Just wanna say Hiddles is NOT spindly-looking. Maybe next to Chris Hemsworth, but otherwise not at all.
Compared to a lot of movie stars, he is. And he is just fine like that.
Preach!
I feel like he just looks 'spindly' next to Hemsworth...
Heart throb from days of yore 😍 (Gregory Peck)
Ha! I said I didn’t like men who were “excessively tall”—Peck was 6’3”.
Usually I don't either, Tom is tall too though.
And now, frankly. What a voice for a start.
And he can dance! Much better that the weird bodies that look like a pile of drumsticks
TBF, Jackman can dance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pSC...
I like Jackman when he dances or does anything else than just be beef meat in a role. he doesn't have to be pumped up like that, it looks unhealthy.
DISNEY! THE MAN JUST WANTS TO SING! LET HIM!
Did you see him in Oklahoma?
No
He flashed his abs onstage during his recent “Much Ado About Nothing” run. “Spindly”, he is not. The word you’re looking for is “sleek”, like a sexy, sexy otter.
He doesn't always look like that, and yeah compared to beefcake bros that is almost skinny.
Cheeky spindly looking works for me. 😆
100%. I've watched those compilations of his silly Loki hair flips...on more than one occasion 😅
Honest question: Thoughts on Lokis summer skin for Marvel Rivals? Cause I think a twink in a speedo is much more in line with "the female gaze". And even then that's a stretch since I think it more appeals to gay men.
Speedo?? Let's not! 😑
The women lust after the Chrises Evans and Hemsworth in this particular media. Though I’m sure there are some Hugh fans. Also those 2 are literally mutants. Genetic freaks and the one on the left the product of a sinister government experiment as well. They’re not supposed to look normal.
Chris Hemsworth is partly due to his physique, but a lot due to his down to earth nature and genuine niceness.
He does come across as likable
This 💯, Channing Tatum comes to mind too, both are FUNNY AF in such a genuine way (at least that’s how it comes across on screen) its delightful
THANK YOU! 🎯
Then why do women swoon over Daniel Craig, Stallone, Brad Pitt, Idris Elba, Henry Cavill etc. etc. There is no women's fan group swooning over Jack Black!
Lol yes there and. . . from allll ages.
Dude, Tumblr held a bracket poll competition for sexiest male fictional character this year, and the winner was Grunkle Stan.
Don't care, you know why? I don't even know who that is!
Jack black FOREVER. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I LOVE THAT MAN.
He's all yours.
Ya me gustaría... 😂
The real question is who actually has the more successful private dating life, in real life. Jack Black or Brad Pitt? It might actually be Jack Black.
Yeah I'm gonna put my money on Brad Pitt. 💵
You are delusional.
First part I'd agree, but when it comes to (body) types I think the thing is rather that women (like everyone else) have individual tastes. Generalizing the preferences of a whole group can be dangerous I think. (I'm neither into bodybuilders nor into dad bods. I'm into long-haired Bishonen types💜)
Right - I immediately thought of all the women that looove going to a Chippendales performance. Power to ‘em. 🤷
I think the point is just that the male gaze is the one that hyper-focuses on a rigid physical type and the female gaze tends to be more flexible and isn’t just flipping the subject from female extreme to male. The second part of the sentiment isn’t talking about a physicality but a character trait.
More female gaze
That's the stuff!
Yes!!! Finished that series a couple months ago. I’m reading the books now
Female gaze, courtesy of me
Yeah well, I could watch this all day 🫠
The "eyes" have it 😍😊
Thank you for your service. He's ridiculously pretty.
Never cared for that slab o'meat look.
I mean David Tennant
Our Doctor. 💕
Forever

Right? He just seems fun, and doesn't take himself too seriously. Body-building is a hobby that bores me to tears, I can't imagine dating anyone who was that interested in their own appearance in the mirror. Fortunately I married a man with more interesting diversions.
Plus ‘roid rage is not great, lol He would make twice as much buttered toast as he really wanted because he’d want to make sure you get enough and pretend to be reluctant to share so you’d feel victorious
Also, people do complain about this all the time! These actors have to dehydrate themselves to get their abs all pointy like this, it's really bad for their health.
Yeah, Henry Cavill said that he was dehydrating for literal DAYS for shirtless scenes in the Witcher, adding that by day 3, you develop the ability smell water nearby. It's ridiculous.
I remember this interview Alexander Skarsgård gave about his time on Tarzan, how during bulk phases he'd eat so much he'd get sick, and how during the cut cycles he'd cry at the smell of food
I just always look at it and think how bad it must be for their health. Like, I can't imagine there's no long term effect to purposely dehydrating yourself for several days
You don't have to steal it. I'll share.
Do guys think they put hot dudes on men's underwear packaging for the ladies?
that is a question I'd love to see answered, as honestly Ladies underwear models more or less scream that they're not aiming at the ladies that are buying them, but the boyfriends & husbands who might buy a one off present for themselves to see on their partner.
Speak for yourself- wolverine origins was mutant porn for me!
My female gaze is on both of these guys and not a muscle in sight. Talent, intelligence and insane bedroom eyes do it for me every time.
Yup. Gross out to the max.
Yep.. give me a dad bod every time ❤️❤️❤️
Roids.... I never understood it.. but hell I was a common every day guy piling 54,000 pound of wood a day in the deep snow and freezing cold of the spruce swamps of Minnesota.. My body never looked like that... hahahahahahahaha its just a weird image to want, useless bulging muscles..
But in an emergency, you are the one strong enough to carry people to safety. Your body is the best.
I wouldn't trust it any more, getting old... worn out joints arthritis, too many injuries.. when young.. I'd lift 200 + Pounds and carry it many times in a day.. Now I'd have to drag the weight.. 54,000 #'s back then was the load of a standard semi truck.. I was lean about 190. not muscle bound
I literally once wrote an entire lecture on Thor and Loki when Marvel was at its cinema peak. Seriously, the shocked looks I got when I explained that Thor was a male power fantasy. Loki was a queer-coded female fantasy. Now, I have to explain Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3 to the same people.
You've explained this perfectly. Video games are a great example of this - especially Bioware.
(Still mad about fun bisexual quippy Anders from Awakening being turned into whiny, drippy mangst boy Anders in DA2).
I mean....K-pop bands, people. K-pop. That should pretty much tell you everything.
Yesss!! I was obsessed with Nick Rhodes, the Thompson Twins, Boy George, George Michael…all!
Omg is this upbringing the reason I'm so in love with guys in make up and those cute little buns? 😁
We who hail from the 80s just know certain things.
Hahaha. Well said.
This explains a lot about my taste in partners!
K-pop bands often consist of exceptionally beautiful, young people. Even without the make up. Nevertheless. Someone dancing (and singing) is infinitely more attractive than someone pumping muscle.
Boybands have been popular for so long. The Beatles where a boy band women screamed over. They all look like cute boy next door types, not hulking muscle machines.
Yup even young elvis (who was the bad/bestial boy archetype by opposition to the others) wasn't some hulking mass of muscle.
well said. He was nothing less than a hunk of something else
A hunka-hunka burnin' cheese? (Sorry.)
LOL not difficult to look away from that, now, is it?
Now I want to see an image of the young Beatles but buff as hell. Beatles meet Magic Mike.
The Meatles
someone needs to do this cover band/Chippendales crossover
wait… you’re a genius
In my opinion Loki was the Hot one. Tom Hiddleston is gorgeous.
Is there any way we could read or watch it?
Unfortunately, no. But by the number of comments I'm seeing, I guess I should write it!
Source please? I was the quintessential Loki fangirl on Tumblr and firmly believe he walked so so many recent Heroine/Villain Romantasy ships could run
By the number of requests, it looks like I might just have to post the lecture!
Omg i found my people because when it comes to Loki?!!! Thats my man
the first time I heard the term male power fantasy so many things in the world began to make sense
It's really fascinating to see how male power fantasies are so often criticized for being "for women." When, no, that massive, muscle-bound action hero is not a female fantasy. It's a fantasy about what (some) men want to be. The "love interest" is a male fantasy about who he wants to possess.
There's a protests too much quality to these kind of posts. [Puts up multiple pictures of big, burly men]: this is awful, just awful.
If only they had some decent pearls to clutch!
Back in the 90s this bible thumper had a newsletter about the evils of the homosexual lifestyle. One of them had a man-on-the-scene visit to a gay club to report first hand on the depravity, and my God it was the sweatiest, horniest thing I've read in my life.
"Look at these degenerates! Look at them! I SAID LOOK AT THEM ARE YOU LOOKING AT THEM I AM LOOKING AT THEM!!"
I flip back and forth between empathy and contempt for people like that because on the one hand it's sad they can't lead the fabulous gay life they clearly want to but on the other hand they're making their hangups everyone else's problem.
I feel that. Mostly, I just want them to TRY and answer their own question before they put another round of "why do people like this character?" on social media. "I dunno, my guy. Why DO they, do you think?"
My best example of this is in Casino Royale where the male commentary is “here’s one for the ladies” when Daniel Craig comes out of the sea in a swimsuit. Whereas the really attractive thing he does is when Eva Green is crying in the shower and he gets in and sits with her.
Perfect! (Total side note: Of course I am not claiming that women don't like to look at handsome men. Or that naked muscle men aren't appealing to some women. But, largely speaking, that's not "the female gaze.")
I myself am not gouging my eyes out at the sight of Daniel Craig in a swimsuit either, to be fair 😊
Daniel Craig in a swimsuit is fine, not appalling but not my preferred look either. I literally wince when I see dudes shaped like a refrigerator made out of balloons otoh
Also true: "the really attractive thing [...] is when Eva Green" [is on screen].
Yes indeed 😊
I mean, I’d love a ticker on how many women ovulate every time Pedro Pascal protects and cares for a vulnerable being…
And he didn't even need to show his face for most of it. Just talk.
Is that the film with Mads Mikkelsen? Everybody's fantasy?
Tbh I'm pretty sure that these male power fantasies are for the male gaze as well, this is how they would like their men. And since they can't admit that they are into that, they project onto it that women must be into that because attraction to men equals femininity to them.
as a queer dude my experience is our mainstream sexual fantasies do not look like that lol the bodybuilders are usually soft young cheery guys, the dominant growly men are visibly middle-aged and usually either chubby hairy dadbods or aristocratic silver foxes, and then there's twinks
Love Loki and couldn't care less about Thor.
I started out liking Astarion the most. I still appreciate he's pretty, but Gale is the one I end up marrying, and I wanna see him with a little tummy and spectacles as a Professor.
To wit - the largest audience of male body building competitions are male.
Random aside, but it also reminds me of a magazine essay from a few years ago about a young man (self-identified incel) who got hundreds of thousands of dollars of plastic surgery so he could finally be "hot" and was absolutely livid women still wouldn't date him. He just couldn't figure out why!!!
“Be interested in her, how her day was, etc,” hurts some male brains.
Explain it them as "think like a golden retriever."
Something about this felt off a smidgeon… then I realized, these are people I would not trust to have a dog and understand how to care for it. Goldens are devoted to an absolute fault (as are other dogs). If you don’t take interest in their needs they will die of sorrow and loneliness.
I mean *blushes faggotly*
Yeah and the funny thing is I've noticed a lot of women like Thor but not as a romantic character. More as a non toxic bro.
That feeling led to the creation of my favorite Tumblr post/meme
Yep. Station has a huge queer woman following...
Astarion, damn autocorrect. For that matter, Halsin the dad bod has itctoo...
I have noticed that queer/bi/pan women are into a very different type of man than straight women are.
Your assessment of Thor and Loki are one million percent correct. Huge chunks of the internet are devoted to Loki fanfiction written by women (and I’m sure also men) of all sexualities and gender identities.
As I recall, it also became this huge point of contention in interviews that Tom Hiddleston was "embracing his popularity with a largely female audience." And I was like, yeah, that IS his audience.
I was always amazed that Hiddleston got so much grief for being appreciative of his loyal fan base.

Yuuuuup.
Do you have that lecture posted anywhere? I'm interested now because I could never properly explain why these two work that way
Unfortunately, no. It was a talk I gave in the classroom for a couple of years.
Rats. I was going to ask this as well. Did you talk about how he can dance too?
Oh, I had a whole "thing" on the media coverage of Tom Hiddleston being apparently confused as to how he could continue to "pander" to women in his audience. My dudes. Women ARE his audience.
With a side argument I saw once in the form of an article claiming the problem with the Thor movies, up until Ragnarok, was that they "appealed too much to women." They resent that Loki is more popular than Thor, I think, and this is partly why.
Oh, there was some serious angst going on then as I recall.
That dance scene in Crimson Peak *fans self*
I absolutely love astarion as a character but felt really iffy romancing him on a play through. He is wounded and needs a lot of healing. I want to be his friend first, get him in a healthy place, then assess a relationship. Unfortunately, this does fit the game mechanics. You have to all-in first.
This is why Halsin exists. I'm sure of it.
I tried to woo him, and every time I act one he rejects me even though he drinks my blood because I’m too committed to rescuing people and acting morally. “I have standards, darling.” … OUCH. But aside from Minthara one time, I know who I am ending up with at the end. I wanted lesbian gaze.
You’re absolutely correct lol.
And it always -- always -- starts with the same question... "I just don't get why so many people like . Why does anyone like this character?!?!?!"
I like them both! 😍
Glad I'm not alone in having a big crush on Astarion and on Tom Hiddleston as Loki (and as many other characters...have you seen him in the blue suit in The Night Manager?!) Plus I relate to him since learning that the Marvel character of Loki is canonically genderfluid
Plus, as a vampire in The Only Lovers Left Alive. Wanders around shirtless with a guitar, being melancholy.
Oh definitely yes. Also it's the submissive coded moments that seem to do it. Like Loki when he's chained up, or defers to Sylvia. And in The Night Manager when he's being butler-ish. And Crimson Peak *swoon*
There is a specific scene from season 1 Loki that lives in my head and makes me swoon every time.
100% this. Heck, 1000% this.
Let me guess. Those are the same people that say "I kill Astarion every time because he came onto me"?
How stunningly correct you are! I even once had a conversation with a guy who said exactly that. It was all, "he came on to me without my consent! I'm justified because no one else in the game does that!!" All I said was, "Lae'zel."
EVERYBODY does that! I had to deliberately antagonize the entire party to avoid romance scenes!
"Coming onto someone without their consent should be a capital crime" is a very interesting take.
And just like that, consent suddenly becomes super important too.
Lol and Gale for other men. They had to patch it to make him less horny becouse he was coming off as a creep.
If they kept him in the party and did his quest they'd learn it's all an act and a defense mechanism but they're too busy being weird about it all. I'm straight and was giggling and kicking my feet when Karlach said she wanted to ride my fTav till she saw stars. These people are weak.
What’re they smoking? The frakin’ ILLITHID comes on to you!
lol they didn’t get that far. Most players of BG3 didn’t even get to act 3.
Which is something my 780 hours of game play will never understand.
The way the world gaslighted me into thinking Astarion was a fuckboi before i played the game... Never forget
Not to be overly pedantic, but Thor was not not a gay coded fantasy. ;)
... And then all of the male Greek gods except Zeus on the dias fainted.
Sounds pretty gay to me. :)
So here for a recap of that Loki/Thor lecture in thread form, just sayin’ 🥹🙏
Ha, that might not be a bad idea.
I don't know why women say blatantly untrue like this. I watch far too many reaction channels, and without fail, every single woman I have seen react to Deadpool V Wolverine has had a lust induced heartattack when Hugh Jackman's oiled abs are revealed. Every one.
I haven't seen the movie, only clips, but Is that just before wolverine and Deadpool have an angry hate sex fight, rolling around, grunting & panting in a car? Maybe that has something to do with it?
I laughed when I saw that bit. I'm not sure reaction channels are a good sample group for all women think something!
I didn't say all women. I'm just disputing the notion that the female gaze does not include huge ripped guys.
The voices in your head arent real.
You very wisely didn't try and make an actual argument.
It always amazes me how men seem to consider themselves an expert on what women think.
Women have told me how they think. Women quite openly express how they think on these topics all the time. Because some dude raised the point of buff men and the female gaze, a subsection of women here are acting like "in the main" they aren't into that.
And yet, women are here in large numbers agreeing with the OP... such a conundrum. But surely women wouldn't tell you what you want to hear to shut you up, would they? After all, no woman has ever fake laughed at a man's bad joke to keep the peace.
You stated your opinion was based on YouTube comments. Which is it, my dude?
Yes, because everything on the internet is real and definitely not dramatized. /s You should probably listen to the women in this thread instead of the people capitalizing on view count.
one thing that you will learn when you grow up is that women are all different and you can't generalize us, there is someone for everyone
I'm not the one that did generalising. You just preferred the original posters generalising to my nuance.
Your post is not nuance. It's mansplaining what women want to actual living women. So stupid.
...does it not occur to you that the point of a "reaction channel" is to perform theatrical reactions? And secondarily that the women performing on these monetized channels do not express the opinions of the entirety of the global female experience?
Have you tried speaking to real women instead of watching reaction reels on a social media platform designed to garner views?
Of course I have many female friends who drool over Thor and Aquaman. I mean its part of tbe strategy to get women to come to superhero films. Get buff superheroes to do at least one obligatory shirtless scene. I mean, what's the big deal about this?
That's all male power fantasy and boring as shit. How is this hard to understand? The hottest character in the Thor series was Loki by a mile, and he never took his shirt off. Hottest Avenger? Tony Stark with his soft brown eyes and reluctant dad vibes.
I'm a bit of a fan, tbh. MCU got me into comics, and Loki's been a genderfluid pansexual with complicated morals since, like, the end of Siege.
The female gaze is evident in that last Low Key panel, let's be real.
I am not into this or seeing almost naked women in their skinning bikinis. Why do women think being near naked is appealing
Men salivating over puny man meat when they could be striving for the peak physical form.... Pathetic
My lentil soup once got me a marriage offer. She had had two glasses of wine, but still.
So there was wine AND soup? No wonder she wanted to wife you haha my partner got me in a similar fashion
okay, i need to try these lentils!
I married my husband largely because of his excellent lentil dhal, so fair enough.
I prefer high SAT scores, and a sense of humor, to muscles. These guys spend all of their time looking in a mirror at a gym.
My husband describes himself as “sapiosexual.” Yes.
Just floating this, but he might be demisexual. I briefly identified as sapio as a teen until it came to light that term is very tied up in the incel community (IQ obsession etc.) and led to some ugly shit. Did some soul-searching and realised the demi paradigm fit better.
i identified as a demisexual as soon as i learned the word existed. i thought i was a sapiosexual when i was a teenager, without knowing the word for it, but decades later i think goku is hot? sometimes it feels like rebellion
I think there’s a lot more demis out there than we realise because the normalisation of the language just isn’t there yet
to be fair i've thought goku was hot since age 21
I had to look that up, and it makes some sense. Regardless of description, he’s a “keeper.”
Bodies don't last forever, if there's nothing inside... What would be the point. Kind hearts are rarely found in beefcake bodies.
That post was 100% written by a guy who thinks women appreciate his dick pics.
With a name like "No room for wokeness" and "Wokenessisevil" you know you are dealing with a vile, yet frightened by everything, POS.
....or share (too many of) your fries.
Proof's in the pudding, and the pudding says women are just as bad as men, they just know how to hide it better.
No, the pudding says women like pudding. And men who like pudding. What am I to do with an unhappy, carb-deprived guy who spends all day at the gym? ^^ (To a colleague at a strip show: "That guy looks miserable. I bet he hasn't had a fry in weeks.")
I‘ll admit that I very much like physically fit guys. But the look the guys in those movies have is absolutely not that. That’s not „fit“, that’s „pumped up“, and done because men like that look.
Exactly. I like people who look as if they enjoy all parts of life. And of course everyone's mileage varies, but from what I have heard among friends, few women I know actually enjoy the overly muscular type.
Yet even science says women prefer pumped up men over "dad bods". Several studies have shown women lie about it, but admit the truth when no men are around. If all these people LIKED dad bods, then there wouldn't be so many lonely men.
Contrasting theory: (Some, not all) men are not lonely because of their physique, but because of their personality. You're accusing several women contradicting you of lying, which makes me think you are not fun to be around. I don't know about your relationship status, but I guess ... QED
Or, alternatively, they are lying to themselves so well they don't see it. And nice personal attack, I'm seeing I'm too close to the truth for you to lash out with those judgements of my personality. Truth is, most women want the Dad bod money, while chasing the bad boys.
Geez, I make my own money and love my partner of 18 years for their personality, and they haven't seen the inside of a gym in over ten years. Maybe believe people when they tell you what they want. Either they know it, or they are delusional and it does not hurt you anyway.
Frankly, with how people gaslight me daily, I don't believe ANYTHING people say. I watch their actions, and their actions do not match their words. TBH, it wouldn't matter if I was gay either, as men, women, gay, straight, about half of the people out there aren't worth dating.
I'm sorry the world presents to you this way.
(I love my partner because they are smart and kind and funny and patient. These are things one needs to exercise regularly as well. And they bear with all my weird ideas. I'm sure most women would say similar things about the people they love.)
I nuked that dude now. No patience for men who know THE TRUTH 1!11!!
Yeah but we alphas love gazing at other alphas because that’s the alpha thing to do. Stealing toast is super beta.
I've not seen fanfics or lusty drawings of those kind of beefy actors (or at least not much). But I've seen an obscene amount for these two delightful doofuses.
Michael Sheen (swoon!)
As is correct and right.
Oh hell yeah
Or the amount of women slithering out of their chairs when they see this man:
Tbf Greg Davies... he's got something about him...
He absolutely does!
Funny and tall, bring him to me!
😄
Ooop I've been called out!!
You’re not alone! 😄
I’d climb that in a heartbeat
You’d have to, he’s 6’8! 😄 And ditto.
The love of Rhys Darby and his dad bod on Our Flag Means Death is similar.
Sort of unfair since every fashion magazine. Every hairstyle is the female gaze on other females.
Sure. Vogue, Elle, Harper's, Cosmo, it's dudes that built NY/Paris fashion. Give me a break. Men not noticing women change their hairstyle is a routine comedy trope across a variety of genres and movies. The female gaze. It's not like Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, don't just have male fans.
It bloody well isn't.
No it's not.
Buttered toast guy is way better to snuggle with.
well, maybe not WHILE the buttered toast.
Instant follow for making your profile pic my favorite recurring character. “The Nth Degree” is my all-time favorite episode of TNG. 🤓
I love that episode. I find him to be incredibly relatable because I too have anxiety problems.
Me. Too. 😅 Especially his holodeck fantasies. I would be kicked out of Star Fleet for all my programs. 🤦🏻♀️
Yep! He just resonates with a lot of people.
Following you both for the Star Trek references. 😘🤓
Yes he is, Broccoli
Reg
How’s your cat?
Neelix? He's good. My cats, Walter and Raymond, are good too
My favorite Star Trek character! 😊
Yeah but no toast in bed because crumbs ≠ snuggles
Buttered toast guy would totally have a little handheld vacuum, because he doesn't expect women to clean up after him.
Exactly!
He might even be the kind of guy who w'd say, "Let me piggyback you into the kitchen & we can eat more comfortably there." The gym rat guy wouldn't do this because the muscles involved in piggybacking his lover aren't on the workout schedule for that day. "Sorry babe. Today's leg day. No lifting "
Those guys never work their legs. I'm asking my buttered toast man to piggyback me into the kitchen for snacks. He said ok.
I’m a Dyson big ball kinda guy but defo no toast in bed.
Hmmm maybe. I have a buttered toast guy but his vacuum is full of sawdust and in his workshop lol. I am the one with opinions on bed linen! 🤣
I have strong opinions on bed linens too. And I too have a buttered toast guy.
This is an interesting comparison of what men want vs. women want in a man, BUT it still implies that one gender is inherently worse than the other instead of systemic sexism being a thing. Wholesome objectification is still objectification. Here is an example I found of a woman objectifying a man:
No, really. Reverse the genders and tell me how this isn't messed up.
This reminds me of the manga I read when I was in middle school about a high school girl accidentally buying a sex bot
Are you actually seriously telling other people that women don't want objects I don't objectify men? are you really that ignorant fucked up in the head
When you build the barely street-legal car of your dreams and the only thing it attracts is other car guys like deer in rut.
This sort of thing always makes me wonder how much of this is a cultural thing reinforced over time by successive generations, and how much of it might be attributable to other factors.
To be clear, these magazines were from the same *month*.
You beat me to it!
Yeeesssss
I’m confused so is she saying men are gay?
She's saying that the directors who shoot male actors like this don't do it for the female gaze. They do it because these actors/their characters are a power fantasy for men. Men think this is peak masculinity. Men want to look like this. Women's opinions don't factor into these depictions.
Now, this is a generalisation (not all men want to look like Wolverine), but this is the "perfect masculine man" image being sold to them. Something to work towards, to perfect their own masculinity. They may insist that women do find this hot, but if they do, it's incidental, and not the norm.
Just speaking for myself, but I look like the buttered toast guy and my wife would gaze at these two all day long if she could. Not to say she would necessarily want a relationship if they were assholes, but women should be allowed to look at what they want without anyone shaming them.
The point is not do we enjoy looking. Sometimes sure. The point is who is the target audience and it is definitely men.
I get the point, I just don't fully agree with it. Women and gay men watch these shows too for eye candy and that's fine. Denying the female gaze exists is telling women they should always prefer the cookie guy and shouldn't lust after the washboard abs guy. It's weird.
My mother used to love watching Magnum PI - never missed a show (she's in her 80's now). He would take his shirt off and she would swoon. That's the female gaze. My wife likes Outlander. Loved when Jamie took his shirt off or showed his butt. That's the female gaze. It exists.
I would “gaze” at Jamie for months on end. He wouldn’t even need to speak
It exists but those guys are regular fit bodies, not gross and veiny.
There was one shot of Sterling K. Brown in Paradise that will never leave my memory.
Huh, I like it! Hubby looked like them 35+ years ago when we got together. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.
Why bother reading Twitter accounts just to argue with them on another platform? Just stop reading Twitter. It's trash.
This is the biggest pile of bullshit that anybody has ever written. Has Dr Kat Day EVER been with a man? I don't support right wing assholes like no room for wokeness but women do gaze at well-built muscular men and fantasize about them a lot.
No matter how good his body looks, somewhere there is a woman who is sick of his shit and done with him 😏
Especially considering these were directed by men.
I can appreciate all the work/sacrifice that goes into the beefcake photos. But brains and a nice smile over brawn any day. And I don't want to feel like I have to keep up with societal expectations. If the guy looks like this, I'd be expected to look like fake Barbie.
In my experience, the female gaze is… cleanliness and hygiene. Like, no BO or weird stains on your shirt, and your toilet is the color of porcelain instead of shit and mold. Maybe some houseplants to demonstrate you prefer to keep things in your company alive, rather than dead.
In real life, these are all important. And in terms of appearance….this is also sexy in the right context. www.pixelstalk.net/wp-content/u...
“Not only do I play bass guitar, I also build furniture.”
Absolutely.
An actual example is Chris Pine in Wonder Woman. There you had a female director so it’s truer to the definition of “female gaze”. I’m not aware of a big budget superhero film with both a female director and cinematographer. If such one exists that would be interesting to compare
Thinking about it some more Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Old Guard” and “The Woman King” both count. Female director + female cinematographer. Both are in the male action film vein. How does she portray “ideal male”? I will note that the romance in Guard was mostly queer, and in King felt tacked on
He’s very fit but not “this is my whole personality now” fit. It’s nice.
He has muscles, but he has also eaten A Carb in the last month
He’ll enjoy a thin crust pizza with you and then cuddle
If I ever get my hands(or any other part of my body) on Chris Pine, I will have no interest in cuddling
my thought exactly. how can films made by men mostly for men be the female gaze?
He’s sexy because he helps Wonder Woman be the hero. He supports her and respects her. ❤️
In the left pic, Jackman's veins are 5% shy of being the manifestation of an alien parasite. My man is about to pop out a clutch of Gorn eggs
Speaking of … Anson Mount as Pike. Handsome, cooks, space dad, leads with empathy. ❤️❤️
God, he is so beautiful.
Yeah, if he was real I’d want a hall pass. Anson Mount himself, not so much.
I'm personally more interested in the female gays. But if they want to go to the gym, fair play to them.
Bodybuilding by men is entirely about the male gaze; they want other men to look at them and covet them.
not to mention their total fascination with their penis's .... lol
Their penises own things?
OMG this reminds me of possibly my favorite webcomic of all time:
Let me mansplaine how you need the obscenely muscular Batman to protect you from... Oh, wait, never mind.
I thought of that too when this post came up...
He predicted Pattinson Batman years ahead of time
Pattinson is hot
I like the edit where the guy thinks bishie batman looks cool :)
👆🎯
The buff men know too. You go on any bodybuilding forum or whatever and it’s dudes: 1. Talking about how yoked Hemsworth looks; 2. Lamenting that they started lifting to get girls, only guys notice them and their dream girl is pining after some yoga dude with a man bun who lives in a treehouse.
🤣!
Do you know if there is a such a forum for yoga dudes with man buns who live in tree houses? Asking for a friend 😜.
🤣🤣🤣
One of the things I notice most at the gym is how often the most buff guys get a little gaggle of gym initiates asking for tips or overall just forming a pack. It's fascinating.
I got hit on by women at exactly the same rate when I had 17” arms vs when I don’t. I got asked how much I can bench at an exponentially higher rate though.
Who benefits from men being pumped? Gyms. Protein pimps. Sportswear firms. Vitamin salespeople etc. It’s an industry. But it’s not just the money being extracted, and the self worth it’s the time. If you are working on yourself you are self isolating. I really do see it as self harm.
I don’t really agree. I’ve been there. Pre-covid I was in action-movie shape and I really enjoyed it. I had fun with the lifting heavy things, I enjoyed going for a run and I felt good about how I looked. I have different priorities now but at the time it made me happy and I like to be happy.
But exercise creates endorphins. Of course you feel happy. But what about personal connections? How many social events swerved because carbs or having to get up early for exercise?
No difference. I felt happy all the time, not just when working out. And yeah it took up a lot of time but so do the hobbies I replaced it with and they’re not inherently better or more valuable. They’re just what I find fun now. Fit people aren’t miserable, they just have different priorities.
Well, a lot of them probably are miserable but that’s because they’re people and a lot of people are miserable.
Go and lift with your friends, cheer each other on for getting jacked, getting fit and appreciating others can be a good thing, but obviously there's a very toxic element too. I need to start and lift and share emotional support group...
Fuckin idiots. You gotta look at rom coms if you wanna make a statement on female gaze, not post a couple pics from movies that were made for dudes. Are they seriously that dense or are they just stirring up anger?
Logically you can censor a woman's nipples with an image of a man's nipples
Ummm you know the characters the actors are portraying here are meant to be super human comic super hero’s right?! Look at a top female or male athletes body, do they lack muscle? Does Simone Biles look like she east stacks of buttered toast?!Gaze has nothing to do with it. Just an idiotic post.
Wow. Did you realize that people like guys who make a stack of buttered toast and let you steal one do not, in fact, think they are Simone Biles? Superhuman and pro athlete are not the same thing. For someone who thinks he's smart and everyone else is dumb, you sure do say a lot of stupid shit.
You know superhero bodies used to not be so built? This specific physique is the rise of extreme muscular standards for men tied with steroid use. Alan Richardson is open that he's used steroids. Christopher Reeve wasn't this jacked. Shit hugh jackman was less jacked in x-men 1 than he was later on
Huge Jacked-Man is not nearly as attractive IMO.
He can do what he wants with his body but I think he looks best when he's kind of jacked but still lithe. He's less graceful when he's super jacked. Chris Evans who has been built since not another teen movie said a perk of not being Capt America anymore is not having to be so muscular
His interview was interesting because he specifically talked about it as not having to carry so much weight around. When I first started talking to smoke jumpers I was surprised they weren't wildly muscular and they said the same thing past a certain point muscles become weight you have to carry
I think one of the main reasons he wanted to quit the Wolverine role was how horrible it was to maintain that level of jacked at his age. It took a lot of cajoling (and money) for him to agree to the Deadpool movie.
I dont think actors owe us their bodies but I dont think this aesthetic is being driven by women.
You can thank Todd McFarlane for that. The muscles on his muscles had muscles
The only athletes who look like this are bodybuilders, because bodybuilders are competing to see who can look the best, not who can perform the best. This physique is sub-optimal for any sort of actual athletic performance, it's why bodybuilders have to cycle between this and bulking.
And of course, "look the best" in this case specifically means "looks good to young men who grew up in a culture where these looks are considered desirable by other men"
comic books by and large are made by men, for men
The male gaze is an academic concept in film theory, you can easily read about it. It's actually very interesting for a man (like myself and perhaps yourself?) to learn about. It's not only about men looking at women, but also about men looking at an idealized version of themselves.
But also, yes they have! Men and women have been complaining and campaigning against this the same way we did with heroin chic! Humans should not be forced to alter their bodies in an unhealthy way to get a job.
Both have zero appeal to me. And especially Hugh who is friends with Ivanka & Jared and was a scumbag cheating on his wife.
Seven hells, I forgot he was the third of the "good guy" trilogy who turned out to be cheaters & covert misogynists. Dave Grohl was one; now I've forgotten the first-- not Taibbi, that was ages ago. Jackman was a shock but Grohl even more so.
Joss Whedon was supposed to be one of those “nice guys” that was a creeper/cheater.
OH I REMEMBER. Neil Gaiman 😱
That’s the other one I was trying to think of!
Yep, that was a while back. I dread even seeing the names of "good guys" in trending anymore. Oh, but the other day I was looking at articles on healthy masculinity & one praised Justin Baldoni 😱 (obviously B4 the Blake Lively situation).
What nooooo!!
HOH really? This is a distraction at best a meaningless distraction. Liking buff or sexualized characters does not authorize you to violate a person. People are attracted to whom they want. There are more serious crap going on if you are all about woman freedom.
being for male gaze vs female gaze does not mean "men/women are attracted to this". the male gaze is a patriarchal power fantasy where men are strong, domineering, active; women are beautiful, available, passive. female gaze is its anti-patriarchy negation. john berger's ways of seeing ep.2 is on YT
:/ I see my bad. I think I should recuse myself from this concept since I am all for equality and safety. But I am coming at this thread with a bias. I am a digital artist and I paint self affirming characters and characters that are (over sexualized) —-> the male perspective if I say so.
If this whole male gaze thing is responsible for the current world scourge of sexual violence I hope the intellectuals could find a solution to it and make this world safer.
I should have never engaged in looking for the “female gaze” itself since it’s not productive. BTW, thank you for clearing this up for me I thought it was about sexual preferences
ur all good the term is misused all the time, v understandable. i do highly reccomend ways of seeing, 4 half hour eps, each a gem. ep 2 lays the framework for understanding the male gaze.
it'll never stop being funny to me that the "bodybuilding" magazines for gay men became what men thought of as the ideal male form.
Also hilarious given how old this is, they basically ended up with the Pattinson Batman
was just going to say this
Needs to be more mopey but otherwise yes
Pattinson batman is so hot and I'm not even straight
This comic also describes the appearance of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure characters which heaps of guys think is awesome.
Imho using JoJo as an example seems a bit of a wash since on one hand yes many of the JoJo guys are very soft featured and flamboyant, on the other a lot of the JoJo guys also have ridiculous, unreasonable, and unatainable muscles too.
As do the women.
I'll be completely honest I'm a bit late on catching up with part 6 but I believe you.
Well, off you go then, get yourself some batshit crazy Stone Ocean and gaze upon those cheekbones. 😁
The latter half of Jojo's and anime Caesar maybe. It's also the half that's more popular with women unsurprisingly. The argument does work better with anime in general where a lot of men are designed to be attractive to women. BL is popular in part because of this too.
Why does he look like Pete Davidson
As a gay man, I want some twink Batman! Hell, I'd settle for Adam West Batman at this point.
Honestly, as a straight man, but with more confidence than that of pathetic “I’m a maaan man!!!” men, I too want to see more beautiful and emotional men in this kind of movies.
Is it weird that my first thought was going from One Piece Zoro to live action One Piece Zoro?
This is THE one I was thinking of!
This is fantastic thank you for sharing 😂
Remember when the incels went ballistic b/c women loved Samwise Gamgee & Samwell Tarly-- b/c they were kind, competent, ACTUALLY protective, & treated women with respect? "BUT THEY'RE FAT!"
Guys don't like being reminded that women love guys with great qualities whose looks are not conventionally attractive because it would require them to acknowledge that their issue is not that they're not conventionally attractive, it's that they're also lacking any of those attractive qualities.
Bam!
💯
Samwise is PRIME hubby material
Maybe we're just really into guys named Sam. Or hobbits.
Well, there is that 🥰
I do not, but it's comforting to know ladies like big softies.
No, we like men who are kind, competent, can take care of themselves (at the very least) & who treat us w/ respect. Doesn't matter if it's Jason Momoa or John Bradley.
Taking care of themselves is a big deal for me! I love taking care of my man but I refuse to enable.
Exactly. When I first lived w/ my ex, I used to make him a coffee (I'm renowned in several countries for my coffees 😍) when he got home from work. Then I began working full-time & stopped doing it every day. He got mad. So I stopped doing it at all. He turned a gift into an obligation & NOPE.
Ya, big competent softies inside and out.
Yeah I always thought the male obsession with half naked men in the media was kinda, I dunno, gay?
I agree. I find it too much muscle. And, I look at that & wonder…STEROIDS? ‘Roid Rage? Depression? Other psychological problems? Possible sexual issues? Long term CV damage? Osteoporosis?
After dating men for 20nyrs I avoid men who look physically attractive in the generally accepted terms. They end up being narcissistic assholes who treat me like shit. It really is what's inside that matters. Just my 2 cents.
honestly I avoid the "conventionally attractive" types because it has to take effort to look like that, and.. why do you care do much about looking like that cmon
Nothing turns me off more than a man who looks like he’s in the gym everyday and counts every single calories. Ugh.
that's my experience too. went on 1 date with one of those muscular gym bros and he was AWFUL. took me to his house instead of a café like i asked, had his way with me even tho i told him no, randomly ate a steak, complained about his ex, i asked him his hobbies and he just said "lifting"
Point taken. Now this…
Live. Live for me.
Oh yes
Take me away from all this death!
Thank you for bringing out the Gen X gold standard - Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Be still my beating heart. 🫀 I was hoping to find this as I scrolled down so I wouldn’t have to go hunting for the gif myself. Ha.
Also. Cultured, seems very considerate, speaks multiple languages, loves to cook...
OMG, that guy's a Disney prince or something.
🤗
😎
This is one I will come back to again and again because it's so wholesome
Me too❣️
Aww, this was lovely.
This is one of the reasons I want to learn to play the guitar. I work at a dog shelter, and want to play for them.
Some dogs will try to sing along! It's absolutely adorable.
The Tooch can get it.
I want him to have an interior design show called A Touch of the Tooch
Oh, I'm a Stanley stan. For sure.
the tooch!
He was hot in that version of Dracula!
Who doesn’t want a man that looks at them like Jackson Lamb looks at a bottle of Talisker?
I went to The Piano with an LGBTQ blend of friends and we all agreed Harvey Keitel with a paunch and Rosetti hair was damn fuckable
I remember my mum coming home from seeing that - she was a-flutter.
Proper response
OMG, so sexy! Could bite me any day of the week! Am not generally a fan of horror movies but that Dracula film was SUCH a treat.
🌻Gary Oldman as Dracula with hot buttered toast…..😍😂😊
Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire. Antonio Banderas in the same movie.
Sean Bean in Sharpe!
🌻😍oh nice choice👏👏😊
🌻good choices👍😊
Self engrossed. They're bad enough when they're just being normal.
*incel hetero male gaze. We queers do often appreciate a Jacked Man, but the violent Ubermensch is exclusively for little dorks who are sad about their dicks.
By the way, next time you see one of these softcore Disney erotic films in a theater, watch the men as they leave during the credits. Guarantee that 90% will be strutting as if they were the film’s hero, grabbing their junk, etc.
this is pathological levels of "making up a guy to get mad at"
I don’t know whom you’re talking about. I’m speaking of personal observations which I find very funny.
Yep, completely repugnant.
Can confirm. Both of these men are entirely too ripped for my personal taste.
The physiques they have in a lot of movies aren't natural. They take training and timed starvation to get all of the muscles to show like that. Just like bodybuilding competitors. I served with soldiers who were ripped (not quite to that level), but were also fit and strong. Functional fitness.
"let you" Wouldn't he make some and include you?
The point is moodboard. He makes extras knowing she likes the tease of nabbing it unsolicited.
I bet there are a lot of women who prefer someone like this! 😉😄
Literally me. This is my type. I never understood the hype abut Tom Holland until I saw him dressed like that. Now I understand. Give me a man who is soft, gentle, and willing to dress up like that, and I could die happy lol
Literally so sexy. I never skip this video when it comes up on my feed.
Oh yes! Androgynous and femme men are like catnip to me. I'd never want a man with so many muscles. It's a bit grotesque.
Have I already watched this video this week? Yes. Will I watch it again now? Also yes.
This is the first thing I thought of when this post came up. Also -Tom Holland’s openly complete adoration of Zendaya…
Any man who knows how to have fun like this will bag more females, or however incles put it, than some gym rat that spends hours per day lifting and eating nothing but chicken and mustard trying to look like the OP’s pics.
And in some ways, it gets worse when the gym rats leave the gym and want to talk to you about their bodies, how little they're eating, how weird their diet is, their workout routine, how their bodies compare to other men's, how you can see their veins, endless monologues body-as-machine.
Zendaya certainly did!
I will never not watch this when it pops up in my feed. The passion, talent, self confidence, and joy in this little clip pretty much captures the "perfect man". Alpha dudes - take note. 😉
I am compelled by law to now watch the whole thing twice.
I miss Lip Synch Battle. Damn that quarantine and lock down. 😆
Oh, shoot, now I HAVE to watch it 😁
I'm old enough to be his mother and I ADORE that young man. And this video makes me happy every time I see it.
Me too! He seems like a genuinely good person and someone to look up to. Plus in the video he looks like he is having the best time 🤩
You know he is dancing for an audience of one and THAT is hot.
Now I want toast!
This was my take away also
for me it's both >:)
🎯 And don’t blame The Gays™️ (of which I am one) either. Yeessssss, there are some, of course, but this alpha crap is either closet cases and/or people with daddy issues. I also want the buttered toast, and I’m not alone.
A they-them, drag queen I used to know was always considered desirable by so many that I was shocked to hear about the "no fats, no femmes" thing. But then my friends tell me this is mostly a dating app problem and the people who are like that irl stick together because no one else can stand them 🤣
Women appreciate a toned male body, just not this.
Those shoulders are definitely for the men! 🤣 why are they so obsessed with looking dehydrated and roided out?
Right? Like, I refer my men with necks, thank you very much! Lol
These dudes have Trump as Superman and Rambo posters with rippling muscles and skin tight pants. And they say they are not gay?
Just perverse.
Straight boys love them some homoeroticism.
As a female with a gaze I'm more into action - is he holding a baby? Is he cooking a meal? Is he sincerely apologizing for fucking up? Is he saving puppies? A chest like that is just genes, diet, and workout routine- it's not a reflection of him as a person.
Except he values spending many hours of his daily life to look like that. 🤷♀️
It's a reflection of how he spends his time and how much he thinks about himself.
A chest like that is steroids, dehydration etc.
And totally a reflection of his person!
Based on my wife's reaction when "Reacher" is shirtless, she might be outside the main :D
Reacher is 🔥
I liked David better. Reacher is hot because he's a big protector type.
Muscles are great if the actor is allowed to have a glass of water once in a while
Oh she liked that too. 😂
I mean, do those abs land the same when it's not Reacher himself? :) bsky.app/profile/adam...
Reacher actually does play to the female gaze as well, because the camera does a lot of focusing on his forearms, which is a romance novel staple.
Reacher's personality helps you overlook the beefcakeness. He does do well with the ladies because his whole being screams "safe dude!" loudly
“The Spouse” is definitely an “arms” woman. Biceps especially. 😂 💪
He's so much hotter in a t-shirt, when he was in his underwear I screamed to my husband "How is he so big?!!" while cackling.
I don't care what other men look like because I know skill, ability, knowledge & experience are always more important than size & strength. Women see men as sex objects just like men see women as sex objects. Women are better at hiding it. It's only stereotypes that make us think otherwise.
Of course not, female gaze are called lesbians (this joke works better spoken out loud).
Don't worry. This gay appreciated it. lol
Thanks
You got me! I can’t believe at how much this got me, I love it.
Thanks, Glenn
Lmao
Like so often in life, there was a brief sweet spot.
I wasn't gonna respond to the first one, but I am still a teenager at heart, and I feel obligated to also say nice
Thank you, Justin
It took me a minute since it was text but...damnit 😂
:wince:
It really does but I now have to explain myself to my wife and son!
Embarrassed to say I didn't get it until I actually said it out loud.
I thought it was well established that the female gaze preferred the Wolverine from the 1st Xmen movie. See also, Russell Crowe who was told by Ridley Scot “chunky is hunky” & begged not to get visible abs. Both these guys are in fantastic shape btw.
Yes!
And Jackman is just naturally tall and slim so his muscles show more. Russell Crowe is naturally more bulky. As he’s gotten heavier, he looks just like his dad. Hard to fight genes. But I love me some Crowe dad bod!
The Nice Guys : where you have Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe next to each other and there's definitely one who can get it and it's not Baby Goose. (though if we ever get a sequel and the characters aren't a couple I'll scream foul)
That lucky little girl with her two dads!
'they fell asleep on top of each other on the couch again. They cuddle more than most of my friends' parents.' (holly makes sure all the bills are paid on time in that family)
Oh I like that! Do you write erotic fan fiction? I’m buying!
Also of note, X1 was directed by a gay man. It’s the straight male gaze that does this.
But Days of Future Past was also…actually, yeah it probably *wasn’t* directed by a gay man.
I like the real life Hugh Jackman. I thought he was gorgeous in the movie with Ashley Judd. Then again I like skinny guys. Muscles are not it for me.
chunky IS hunky, and also the idea that that physique is "chunky" is fucking WILD
Honestly he's even hotter in Nice Guys and he def chunky boi in that.
I also like how it isn't Deadpool and Wolverine where he is noticeably older and closer to a healthy fit look. Body builders are an unnatural fit and people can tell.
This Russell Crowe is just.. nice. Dang!
My late husband and I each had one lifetime free pass. Although never used, mine was Russell Crowe. Abs are way overrated. Intelligence and gentleness are the female gaze.
Russel crow is making me feel things I wasn’t prepared for. That’s waaaaay more attractive than “swol”.
Russel Crow in Robin Hood is my favorite
Oh I’ve never seen it, I’ll have to check it out 😄
"Muscular yet nourished and hydrated" 🤌🤌🤌 the key to ultimate sexiness
These two images show extremely trained actors. I am not completely sure what Crowe's full diet and fitness plans were, but it entailed daily cardio, weightlifting and full on Gladiator Training with weapons. So these do not fit the portraied body type. The description sounds like BMI of 35+.
X1 was amazing Wolverine. He looked like an actual person and handsome
I can’t stress this enough.. Wolverine is not actual person, he’s a mutant… 😂😂😂😂😂 you guys have hit your head
Very @thelouvreof.bsky.social on this one
accurate yet stupid
www.polygon.com/comics/2019/... are you marvels lawyer?
lmfao exactly what i thought of. that's what this guy's referring to, right?? legally mutants aren't human!
Genuinely impossible to tell if your steadfast refusal to understand that this conversation is about Wolverine, as played by Hugh Jackman (an actual human man) in the X-Men films, and not about Wolverine, the comic book character as drawn by [insert artist here], is an intentional bit or not. 🤨
Mutants aren't people? Dang, guess all the people with third legs or extra finger and toes aren't people now
Umm comic book characters are not people. Do we have to explain basic fiction now?!
Comic book characters are made of flesh? Dang, I had no idea. That guy in the image made of meat and skin and hair totally fooled me into thinking he was an actual person. Because everyone knows only comic book characters are made of flesh, that's why none of us are real and we should all fade away
Only four posts on your account and they're all bad ones.
When they project the comic book up on the big silver screen at 24 frames per second, and there are fleshy bodies pretending to be the comic book characters, that doesn't really sound like a comic book, it sounds like a movie with actors
That’s Hugh Hackman not a comic book character. Do you need someone to tell you what a human looks like?
wolverine is 5'4 i don't even know how a fan could be confused between a tall buff australian and a dimunitive canadian mutant
look bub, the camera adds like 10"
This explains so much about porn
Kind of a bad fan if you missed the very big, obvious allegory that punches you in the face.
Oh good try at gatekeeping, fanboy. Too bad your opinion is completely and totally wrong and you don't understand the basic theme of XMen
uhh mutant rights are human rights my guy
Who the fuck said anything about human rights my guy…. We are talking about comic book super heros. Stop projecting.
you are terrible at this
dude you are so dumb
everyone else was talking about hugh jackman being more attractive, you are talking about comics.
comics that he didn't read, apparently
Aw bro youre stupid
Most intelligent bluesky reply guy.
dont let magneto hear you say that mutants arent actual people, man
Homo superior!
Now that I think about it... My homo homies are pretty dope!
-In their posterior?
.. in my interior
But from the skin out I'm homosapien too
Such a great song!
We are.
No. A homo (well a bimo bit nobody needs the whole life story)
Bonus points that one shot from wolverine on the left involved a 2-day water fast that almost gave Hugh Jackman kidney failure. I guess the peak male physical form is 20 minutes from passing out in 48 hours from renal failure.
You've either been punched in the face too much, or not enough. Either way, I'm happy to help out if you need it.
Is this @thelouvreof.bsky.social bait?
This guy is way too much of a try hard to deserve louvre attention
If you are hot for shredded and jacked High Jackman just say so bro
I can't stress this enough... Wolverine is not a real person, he's a fictional character played by an actor.
he's not just a comic book character, he's a Huge Jacked Man
Just to be clear. The character of wondering was played by a real human being. The talented actor Hugh Jackman
We are all mutants
i like that they made hugh jackman looked like a messed up mutant but it's definitely less attractive, which i don't think is a bad thing
the practice now is to dehydrate the actors in advance of scenes like the one OP posted of Jackman. he’d prob drank less than a half liter of water in the 3 days preceding that shot.
It isn't just dehydration. You have to be juicing to get that style of muscle bulk and you have to cut hard to get that kind of definition. The dehydration is just one part of it
no doubt
I know for Deadpool and Wolverine, Jackman said on the press tour that there were a couple of scenes where he didn't even know where he was.
And that's unhealthy AF
Tbh, and maybe this plays into the stereotype that straight women can't stop overthinking sex appeal, but knowing these actors are abusing the heck out of their bodies to get this way, for me, at least, gets in the way of being able to enjoy the result. Let this poor man eat a cheeseburger!
yes, though they have medical minders in the case of movie stars. i think jackman has strongly warned people against doing it. the effect also doesn’t work unless you drink copious amounts of water for weeks or months in advance to train your body to quit storing it. it’s all very impractical.
I am very fond of Chris Hemsworth (go watch the film, A BAD TIME AT THE OLD ROYALE), when I learned just how much they were doing the dehydration trick for his presentation as Thor.
... and mainline some intense diuretics for 12hrs beforehand.
I recall years ago some of the guys from Game of Thrones talking about how they got drunk the night before a shirtless scene in an attempt to dehydrate themselves and make their muscles stand out more.
Oddly enough it's something of a myth that alcoholoc drinks are dehydrating. Alcohol is indeed a mild diuretic but almost all alcoholic drinks contain more than enough water to compensate.
Him and Henry Cavill both talked about how shit the experience is. Like on the third day “you can smell if there’s water in the room”. Nobody needs this crap, it’s torture.
Henry Cavill talked about this for filming Man of Steel. They filmed in Illinois, nearly 100 degree weather, and he couldn't drink even during because of the suit. His face looks gaunt in those scenes.
I second that.
Makes me think about these pics of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. They are two NFL players at the top of their careers-actually using their bodies and need muscles for functionality not vanity. This is what the male body is supposed to look like.
I get your point. However, I would hesitate to say that something as niche as being a professional American football player shows us that one real type of THE male body. This applies to about one in a million men.
This is attractive. The top pics are not.
Russell Crowe in Gladiator..my lord. All kinds of hot.
I was entertained!
Tell me I'm not the only one turning into a puddle at the end of that one? 😭🫢
If “chunky is hunky”, then I’m well on my way to being a sex symbol.
He was so young and half naked and hairy!! Loved it!!
Not a woman, but asgdgdslklfddgl I very much aesthetically appreciate that Russel Crowe image and tip my hat to Mr. Scott. Like, I don't enjoy everything he does in his movies, but that's a great approach.
YES! I was just going to search for xmen 1. That's a guy to cozy up to! A human!
Right? And like, I can even think of examples of actors who were visibly ripped, but nowhere near Marvel/Reacher ripped - Patrick Swayze's career comes to mind.
My first crush was on Harrison Ford around Empire/Raiders & they always found an excuse to show Indy shirtless at least once per Raiders movie. Humans experience a wide variety of attraction. Weird that movies have selected the one male form that most women are pretty "meh" on as their only example.
It's not weird, it's men marketing to men.
Jackman was probably stronger in this photo than the dehydrated beef jerky he is now. That's a much sturdier core.
Being 30 instead of 55 will do that.
My wife says the hot Hugh Jackman was the one from Kate and Leopold:
She’s absolutely right.
Abs you could grate cheese on look very… something, and seem like they should be the pinnacle or whatever, but at age 39 they are not the view that activates my lizard brain and causes it to take over all higher functions. I might uhhh watch Gladiator sometime soon
For research purposes, you might want to watch the Robin Hood movie that Russell Crowe starred in as well 👀
Ah I haven’t watched that one in a century either
This is only the case because they didn't put any effort into Gambit
omg THIS!!!! men needs some meat on them!
(I can't speak for all women, but my own gaze would've prefered Wolverine to look like Leopold from Kate & Leopold. But yeah, if I have to choose one Wolverine, it'd definitely not the pumped up end version who looked like he couldn't even more without his muscles getting in the way.)
*be and *move
crowe here is legit like "perfect" shape imo
Right! Like none of these pictures shows a "dad bod", which a lot of women prefer. These are guys who probably worked out hours a day to achieve this look, which is closer to "this character does a lot of physical labor" than "this character spends hours in the gym sculpting his abs".
It's fit, but in a rugby player build. The first photos above they look like they would have no stamina for any truly physical work or sport. For starters they have to dehydrate to get like that.
I agree wholeheartedly, although I'm kind of hung up on a man making a stack of buttered toast. How big is the stack, and were they planning on eating them all originally?
I can only assume it's based on toaster capacity and current humidity.
I'm wondering the same things and am very eager to find out 😏😆
My kind of man is someone like Gene Wilder.
that works...but is he funny and kind too?
Funny and kind... yesssssssssss
OP has *no* idea how many women are into Jeremy Allen White, my God
So Into him.
Ohhellyes on Keanu. My first serious crush almost 40 years ago and still much adored. 🥰
Oh, yeah... 😏
Talent, substance, and genius are sexy as f*ck. And these men are geniuses at what they do.
So I don't need a ripped abs and chiseled arms, just talent and genius? Awesome, I was worried the standards were too attainable. /s
actually you need neither im a loser short twink guy with no special genius and no ripped abs and i get people. i have no idea how but i guess im somewhat interesting or whatever.
yeah but also that Keanu, man, you ain't gotta be male-interested to see the absolute sexiness in that, no way, no how. and such a sweetie, t'boot.
Agreed. 😄 I have never heard a negative word spoken about him, and especially in Hollywood, that says a LOT.
Better than Robert Redford (Watchmen) 😱
The actor? Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!
Although a similar thing happened in real life. I lived in Czech Republic during the 90s & Vaclav Havel suggested making Frank Zappa minister of culture. We expats were talking about it & someone pointed out that, in fact, Shirley Temple (Black) WAS the US Ambassador 🤣
That show freaks me TF out. Cannot binge. Have to sit w/ every episode & think about it.
OH MY GOD, UNEXPECTED AND WONDERFUL 👍🤣
I understood THAT reference
That would be a future worth fighting for! 🥂
Damned right. 👍
Where's there?? I WANNA GO THERE!!
SECONDED. 👍
👍
Keanu is Canadian. He’s too good for USA.
He really is too good for the U.S.... 😔
You don’t understand, he’s the president of North America. By the Friendship Act of 2020, a Canadian, a USian and a Mexican take turns being president. After Hillary, Keanu became president on Cinco de Mayo, 2024.
Don’t know what’s going to happen on 2028, but Diego Luna has been seen talking to Keanu.
You mean after Dolly Parton?!?
Dolly Parton is a living saint who does not taint her aura of goodness with worldly politics.
He's just wonderful. *sigh*
Love him!!!!! *swoon*
Oh, lord... *hand to heart*
Keanu Reeves, be still my heart. Yum
Oh, indeed... 😌
Parker Stevenson! Sweet Jesus🥰🙌
Yep. *swoon*
My fav Hardy boy. Always.
SAME!
OMG he had a career after The Hardy Boys? I was so hot for him in the 70s ...
You and me both 🤣 I think I read somewhere that he started a career as a photographer.
You might want to look up a show called "Probe" on YouTube. Kinda Sherlock before Sherlock, Stevenson plays a tech guy who would rather spend his time in his lab building inventions but ends up getting dragged into solving weird mysteries.
Definitely going to check it out!
Definitely thought bottom right was John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats
I can see it... Actually, the more I look at the photo, I'm reminded of Bob Weir in the 80s.
I thought the third one was Rene Auberjonois
God, I see the resemblance now... 😄
I did too, I had to check the alt text
Not gonna like, i thought for a second Keanu was crouched attop a tortoise.
I know, I caught that too 😄
... (also, meant "lie"... as i DID like.)
I didn't catch *that* until just now when you said it 🤣
I can see it
I can see him at my kitchen counter eating a freshly baked dessert.
Yes! 😄
👍!
I crushed so hard on Parker Stevenson. Oh my
Oh my goodness, yes... *swoon*
Best topic ever on bluesky. A few more, for your consideration - "the eyes have it"
Kind eyes. Eyes that say "I see you" Eyes that show emotion.
Oh good lord, YES.
Eyes show so much. Whether you have a brain or not. Whether you are a bastard or someone who can make me laugh. Whether you see other people or only yourself.
110%! 👍
I can definitely take Rowan Atkinson as role model
Thank you! Rowan finally gets some love 😆
Keanu is a beautiful soul
He is indeed!
Keanu 😍❤️
Indeed!
Indeed, Keanu Reeves, Rowan Atkinson - and Idris Elba. 🤷🏼♀️ (And let‘s hope Jackman recovers well from all that bodybuilding and CGI.)
Yay- Rowan Atkinson gets some love 😄 Oh, yes, Idris Elba... *swoon*
Jamie Stewart! There’s a deep cut all genders can get behind
Oh, GOD, yes... 😏😆 I keep saying this, but he was such a great bassist and the band really hasn't been the same since he left.
Agreed! There are some good songs on Ceremony but Sonic Temple is the holy document, the high water mark
Indeed! They were at their best with that one, though I have a soft spot in my heart for Electric.
Omg. I went to school with James Stewart. 😁
[insert Elaine Benes hollering "Get. Out!" here] Seriously? That's awesome! Such a great bassist...
😂 Primary school and he displayed no inkling of the person he was going to become. Quite the opposite actually from memory 🤣🤣
Jesus, I can't imagine... 🤣
She sells Sanctuary is one of my favourite songs.
Mine, too- right up there with Rain and Fire Woman- so many good songs. The Cult is the soundtrack to so many of the speeding tickets I got. Something about them just makes you want to crank up the car stereo and floor it. 🤣
This is less about gazes and more about body building. I've seen female body builders. The real question is why so many males remain infantile.
🤣🤣👏👏
Wet Anthony Bridgerton: share.google/ZZa83Pi2qMbY... See also: Aragorn, he of the "grimes up good." I don't want a man whose pecs are bigger than my breasts. No roided out bodybuilder types. More to life than egg whites, broccoli, and steamed chicken.
Always like we wet period shirt.
I also offer that there’s no inherent threat if a woman admires a man, which is not true in reverse. I don’t remember the attribution but men worry that women will make fun of them. Women worry that men will kill them. It’s not a level playing field or even the same ballpark.
Margaret Atwood 😊
Of course it was. Thanks!
All those "alphas" out there with latent homosexual tendencies that they lack the self-awareness to see crack me up.
Also people do complain about it, specifically how making this seem like the ideal body deeply hurts men’s self confidence and the lack of acknowledgement of how unhealthy getting this jacked is
Yes!! Thank you!
True.
Exactly!
I’m not maintaining a lean, sinewy frame for Venus, but for Mars.
I'm prepared to meet women halfway on this (get your own toast ladies)
My wife swears this is true. I believe her.
They look all knobby and hard I want someone to cuddle
And greasy and veiny 🙁
When you know that the beefy workout guy will turn to a fat flabby old man within months of not spending hours daily working out when life happens. We'd rather have the man who built his character.
I like your direction, but I'd be happy eating pancakes with these two any morning 😉
Good movie that actually explores that concept is Beau Travail. It's been said to be shot from the female gaze but its also about how men view the physicality of other men.
ahahahahahaahavhavha so true
Going by the Tates and other "alpha males", they get off on it a lot more than any women I've known. Most of the guys I know think "god, way too much effort".
If they look like that, it’s their entire personality. That’s as deep as the conversation will ever go.
You are not wrong.
So insane that anyone takes the Tate brothers seriously as anything but creepy-looking rapist manchildren. Like are yall blind? So far from attractive masculinity...
Thank god, because who wants a bloke who's forever looking at himself in a mirror and won't eat fries because they're carbs and is generally full of himself?
You are correct. BUT the problem is that you think the two things are mutually exclusive. You assume that a man cannot workout enjoy his masculinity power AND also be gentle, kind and work for things like justice & compassion. That is why you really y off the mark.
No. It's just that the original post isn't the female gaze.
I am a (gay) man and I find these (artificially?) overdeveloped muscles in these photos simply disgusting.
something tells me Wokenessisevil might be just a little bit upset if wolverine were wearing like, a g string and harness in combat
Yet women are almost universally drooling over Pedro Pascal. This isn't the female gaze at all.
Nope , we don’t. We can separate an actor preparing for a role in the movie and guy full of steroids looking like Micheal Man.
Don't what?
We don’t like roits bro look.
What's roits? Sorry I couldn't tell if you were agreeing with me or disagreeing lol
I’m assuming it’s a typo of roids- steriods. No woman wants to be around a man who is has enhanced anger issues. I’ll take the bear any day.
I was told that Roids bros is an official name for this kind of gym rats.
One of the great loves of my life, while it lasted, was a short, balding, slightly pudgy guy with semi-crooked teeth, about 10 years older than me.
But he was extremely funny, kind, highly educated and still intellectually curious on a wide range of topics, supportive of his LGBTQ daughter,
and interested in my thoughts and opinions which he, although with much more education than me, valued in equal measure to his own as well as being pretty good in the sack. And I find that GD sexy in a man.
It didn’t work out, he met someone else, and I was crushed, not so much that he did but that he wasn’t honest about it for far too long and I felt played. But anyway, I got over it.
Many years earlier in the early 80’s for a short time a dated a guy who looked like a young James Spader, drove a BMW, worked as some sort of stockbroker/investment banker.
And he had all the personality of wet sponge. No sense of humor, no interest in my interests or what I had to say, never wanted to talk about anything else but his work and all the money he was making and seemed to think he was doing me a favor by dating someone below his “class”.
After dates, he’d drop me off in front of my apartment building, not even walking me to the door and drive off. I don’t know what he was like in the sack, it never got that far but based on his kissing, I wasn’t optimistic. I dumped him.
I'm so sorry you got lied to in my experience the lies hurt far more than the cheating that's why I now declare myself as ENM it removes the lies.
Pedro Pascal leaves me cold. He's apparently a very kind man. He reminds me of Burt Reynolds which may contribute to my feelings about him.
Which is why I said "almost" universally.
I actively avoid seeing him on screen, to clarify. I'm an Elder Gay, just for transparency.
Each to their own :)
And we know he's gay! Still drool!
Exactly! any guy that sees women as human beings got our vote at this point
It’s the kind face.
It's because he sees us as human
BINGO. That’s what does it.
Fun fact: men are stimulated visually.
Girls say that, but it depends on age and what they are looking for. I honestly know younger, handsome men who get girls attention way more than average or below looking guys their age. I know older guys who pull older women without being hunks, but those women want security.
Uh....... what
Uh, simple, women, are like men, they are driven by physical attraction first. I'm not saying when they want a real relationship that comes first, but it doesn't for men either when they want something long term.
And what makes you say the "idea physical body" for a straight woman is... Whatever that is ?
People can say "anecdotal evidence" as if what we see repeatedly and common sense don't have a role. I could say who says most men don't get turned on by female models. Would what you have learned from years of experience lead you to believe me?
What I see repeatedly is round married men with their wives at the market, and my common sense says "that much muscle cannot be healthy or comfy", so once again, Where did you get that from ? And my experience is men and boys drool over models pictures.
If anything you are the one bringing anecdotical evidence.
No, drr, what I said is you can't simply ignore lotscof data you see and input through years of life experience and dismiss it and simply call or "anecdotal evidence" as if that means it is all wrong. Otherwise I guess I am wrong that many people like eating ice cream. I just have anecdotal evidence
I can and I will because I have asked you twice where you got that and you couldn't give me the "data", while all my data of what I see and input through years of life experience is round married men with their wives at the market.
Those women likely married them in spite of that, or, as is often the case, the men put on the weight with age. Marriage is about more than looks. I'm speaking of simple physical attraction, go to a night club and see what guys the women are into. Many guys would gladly get fat if it was attrtve.
When your anecdotal evidence reads like r/ihavenochinandthefemoidswontdatemebecauseirefuseto washmyassbecausethatdbegay yeah it sounds like you're regurgitating Andrew Tate
*anecdotal
There's no way you're real, lol Like how could you go on a "I hate fox news" rant while simultaneously regurgitating Andrew Tate?
Regurgitating that slime? Hell no. How do you conflate someone saying women are in fact attracted to stereotypical good looking men to him? Get a life. You seem fake.
At least they answer to what people say, you sound like a bad chatbot
You got no pfp, no selfies, no original cat pics, biographical data, and have been spending how long now telling women that you know what they want better than they do but you're not regurgitating Andrew Tate? Lol ok bot.
*ideal
Lol what?
at no age did i fancy men who looked roided up before pictures are always hotter i swear to christ
Rape still exists. In the US it is on the rise. 70000 rape babies since roe V wade removed (last time I checked) Female gaze is not a problem: it is not a threat of violence. Not rocket science: thus men are stupid. If them/they wasn't so linguistally complicated I disown my he/him.
Do it!
And that's only the reported rapes. We all know that 3 out of 4 never get reported, out of fear & shame. I don't like the thought of dating a man that could break my neck with his bare hands, if he gets angry, I choose Bruce Banner, over The Hulk...
It's bullshit but great if feeding an inferiority angst/anxiety to punt out pointless supplements, to excuse unrefinedly 'macho' dominance culture, to justify 'strong man' fascism, to second guess difference as 'other' or to cast men as a bland, homogenic mass.
yes, that's why women fall for all the iterations of Mr Darcy, cuz his big guns. 😂
If the enduring popularity of Mr. Darcy proves anything, it's that the sexiest thing a man can do is say "You were right and I'm sorry."
I’d bet a decent number of women still like fit men more than cuddly men (though personality and overall chemistry more important). But the super absurd hyper cut ripped physique like these photos are 100% male fantasy bullshit that just is a million miles away from the everyday persons real life.
Guys that look like that are either on steroids and prone to roid rage or spend so much time in the gym that they’re boring. This is to show off for other men.
You are underselling it. These actors literally dehydrate themselves before filming so that their muscles will show more. No one looks like that in everyday life.
Myself, I'd say Jackman looks way better in the first Xmen film, if only because he doesn't look like he's being electrocuted. Also, he doesn't look like you'd get splinters from cuddling him.
He was so young and hairy and running around a mansion half naked! ❤️❤️❤️
Hard to believe it was 25 years ago.
