Ok, if any owl was going to fly down my chimney I would want it to be one of these. In the part of Washington State where I live they are actually common but almost nobody knows about them since they are so tiny. Between the size of a sparrow and a robin, pigmy owls are SO cute (on a tiny branch):

I've been trying to find a video of northern pigmy owls hopping around on the ground catching bugs since it's unbearably cute but can't find any. They fly away at any small sound. I have these tiny owls all over my property since I can hear their unique cries but they are almost impossible to see.

I have lots of big cedars around my house and it's almost impossible to see one in there. The cedar frond hanging next to it is not as long as your hand. I'm not sure you would see the little guy up there. I mostly see them when they land on the ground and hop around to catch bugs.

I grew up on a reservation, and it was the same. People would freak out if an owl showed up, because it meant that someone was going to die. One of the elders, though, told me that people were getting it wrong, and that the owl was a messenger that someone HAD died and had been carried across.

Sealed up the fireplace opening in the house (could hear the buzzing but they never came in), called a bee collector and the vacuumed out the colony and relocated them. They collected a small amount of honeycomb. They screened over the chimney tops to prevent a recurrence.

I put my tree up, and then left it undecorated for a day or so, until both cats had a chance to learn that it definitely would not bear their weight. No problems since.

The funny part was, one of the cats ended up being absolutely obsessed with it. He would constantly sit and watch the lights, and when I took it down, he yelled at me for DAYS. 🤣

This family was lucky it was only an owl making like Santa down the chimney. Could've been a squirrel, raccoon or who knows what. And it could have been rabid. After hearing otherworldly yowling and screaming in my chimney for days once, I called a critter service to come see what was up...

...the yowling had stopped, and I was worried whatever had been yowling had died in there. I keep the flue closed, which was just as well given what the critter service said. The tracks in the roof snow were from a raccoon, which, thankfully, had escaped, rather than dying in the chimney.

They then informed me only a metal plate with a weight dangling from a chain had been covering the chimney, and the plate had been pushed aside. I had them install a grate over the chimney top. No more yowling since--and, interestingly, no more mice are getting into the house to entertain my cats.
