I have a fondness for Seed Oil freaks because they’re an object lesson in how bad you can get owned by reading something online that sounds sort of real (canola is too high in omega 6s) and end up exclusively gargling tallow which is like half saturated fat.

remembering a thread on the somethingawful forums from like 15 years ago where page 1 was "let's do the paleo diet!" and by around page 8 was like "breakfast: coffee mug of bone marrow and beef fat" and around page 12 the thread was closed because somebody went to the ER.

I’ve been on and off keto and recently got my bloods done with high cholesterol showing (I was on keto at the time). While it’s worth taking it with a grain of salt, looking into the science of it, it seems that the rapid breakdown as using fat as energy means the fats…

…they track for cholesterol- ie the bigger fats, seem to be found in your blood as they are transported around the body for energy. While its worth noting I don’t think any extreme diet is good for extended periods of time, my bloods returned to normal afterwards and I lost a lot of weight that was…

…affecting my quality of life. I wish it were easier. I’ve tried so many things. Eating well, exercising (so much so I ended up injuring my back severely), and the only way I’ve been able to lose weight without starving myself was keto. Anyway, long spiel to say it’s more than meets the eye.

It also seems that leaner individuals see much more dramatic cholesterol increases over other body types and that it’s not necessarily an indicator of heart disease for people like this. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

This is a pretty brutal chart for the notion that the cholesterolemic elevation from keto is easily reversible. It was reversed in the group who took statins, but the group who didn’t saw a sustained ~40% increase in LDL. Everyone’s gotta do what’s right for them, but that’s definite ASCVD risk.

Chart from the linked study showing LDL levels before, during, and after keto diets, for groups split between those who started a statin after stopping keto and those who didn’t. Both groups start around 125, peak at over 300, but the statin group drops to near 100 post-keto while the non-statin group hovers around 175.

Yeah, agreed. I also did it while informing my doctor I was doing as such. The problem is so much of our food now is so dense in nutrients that often you're working against your body in trying to stay healthy.

Diet "culture" has made everyone act like an idiot about food. Just eat some fresh veg and a real actual piece of fruit every once in a while and you'll be fine! This obsession over exact nutrient content blah blah blah is sooooooo overdone and makes everyone have a damn eating disorder about it.

The thing that’s most frustrating about diet and exercise is that literally anything is better than the SAD (Standard American Diet) and lifestyle (sedentary), so any fitness regimen or diet, no matter how insane, will produce enough results to gain a cult following

Yeah I came across this when I was on keto. The millennial in me saw the saturated fat content and said fuuck no but many VERY legitimate-looking sites were purporting that all that 90s wisdom is outdated IIRC they claim energy is immediately available to burn so the adverse impact wouldn’t happen…
