Why is the functional alcoholic who lives under a roof serving of empathy and treatment and the crackhead who lives on the street is not?

“Leniency” is not the problem. The problem is people forgetting HOW CLOSE THEY ARE TO BEING IN THAT SAME BOAT.

I once read something about this. We middle class assign bad choices, laziness, etc to those less fortunate as a way to assure oneself it couldn't happen to me (I don't make bad choices, not lazy, etc). When in fact you are correct...we are all one accident or illness away from living on the street.

I do very well for myself and I am quite comfortable. But like you or most other people in the country I am one major illness away from being wiped out.

I’m fortunate enough to have friends and family who could (I fuckin hope) shelter me until such time as I could get back on my feet. Not everyone is!

A lot of the “people WANT to live on the street” talk comes from help that is offered to these people that comes with strings attached that would rob them of the dignity they have left

Every time one of these people talks about how they think homelessness works, it sounds *awesome*. Freedom from responsibility! Freedom from consequence! Freedom from the very rule of law! And you get *paid* for it! So... why aren't *they* doing it, then? Why are they such goddamn *chumps*?

I was a busker for a few years many years ago. I only ever met one homeless person who genuinely wanted to be homeless and that was because he was quite seriously mentally ill and he just saw everything as a potential prison. And I met so many homeless people doing that job.

I have talked to at least two women on the street who had to choose between keeping their dog or going to a shelter for the night. Not even a shelter where they were guaranteed a second night, just one night. That is a horrible choice to have to make.

Only slightly related, I was at a Weird Al concert last weekend and they showed a scene from the "biopic" movie during a costume change. You are, far and away, the superior Gallagher when compared to the real one.

In San Jose our stupid mayor's plan was to make a bunch of tiny homes and arrest people who didn't live in them. He effectively wanted to make a ghetto with no city services and kick anyone who drank a beer or smoked a joint out at the first infraction.

The good news is the plan fell through. The bad news is he's still arresting unhoused people anyway because he sucks. But assume the plan had happened, who would have any faith in that actually working? Give people REAL housing-first options, geez!

You can have an apartment, but can’t share it with your unmarried partner! Or your dog! A strict 6 PM curfew, so you can’t work a night shift! You can have a space, but only one bag of items, not two! The federal government will pay you in full to lease hotels, but you, uh, just don’t do it!

100% agree. The basic necessities of living should not be tied exclusively to your professional position nor be in jeopardy if that position falls into jeopardy. The rest of the world has figured this out already, but we let the rich tell us what to think.

Because we're taught that cruelty to the homeless person is a deeply apotropaic act + protection against ending up like them. And bc we get off on viewing the powerless with scorn. We like to forget that homelessness CAUSES drug addiction. And that it's far harder to get off the street than onto it.

The US likes pretending that the numbers haven't shown how giving the unhoused a permanent address, helping them get their documents back in order to they can maybe get hired, and where needed, getting them mental health/addiction care, is MUCH cheaper and more effective than continuing as we are.
