Hi, you know that whole "if you're not Indigenous don't say INDIAN" part that Indigenous people have been calling you out on for the past two days? You're still doing it wrong.
Hi, you know that whole "if you're not Indigenous don't say INDIAN" part that Indigenous people have been calling you out on for the past two days? You're still doing it wrong.
Like you added a "hi guys here's an extra part that didn't make the cut!" But not an apology or a disclaimer about the harm you caused?
Skoden!!! 😆 LILILILILILILILILILILI ✊🏽🪶🏹🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 #WEDIDNTBURNENOUGHWAGONS
Do you mind giving some background on this because I thought using "Indian" was a valid term
do you know where India is?
My understanding is that it's a preference for a minority of people and extremely offensive to others therefore not a good choice out of all the terms she could have picked
Indian is okay for folks from India. But not natives who were mistaken for Indians because dipship "explorer" and genocidal extraordinaire Christopher Columbus.
My grandpa is Nimiipuu and says Indian is fine who should I listen to?
Is he, though?
He’s literally from the Nez Perce reservation idk what else to say. He’s like 80 tho so he’s probably got a different perspective
your grandpa also isn't making any money off his existence and this lady is presenting information at a professional capacity to make money. John Locke wrote about specific tribes, she could name those people using old pan-Indian terms shows a lack of research or true respect, imho.
not trying to dunk or argue btw, I am genuinely a Black Native, CRT educator and authenticity researcher. power + influence matters alot in modern context. some people make things *about* us to serve themselves when really media should be made *for us* because we exist in modernity
as someone with no dog in this fight, can I suggest that maybe Abby should have invited Sthelen's grandpa on the show to talk about it for himself
I'd love to see that tbh. alot of community elders are weird about being recorded bc whites steal everything
Rightfully so
And the ones that DO want to be spoken to, I have noticed, tend to be sidelines and actively censured. Is this real, or is this just my imagination? Because it seems that way to me.
oh yeah white docs love a few quotes in a rez accent but i dare a single white journalist or documentarian to really let a Native person represent themself
i double dog dare anyone to make a doc where the Afro Natives aren't literally cut from footage too
I love how people are doing the meme about how their great grandpa was Indigenous so they can do x and y in your replies. One of my mother's grandparents is South American Indigenous but I don't talk about it because she died when my mother was very small and I have like 0 ties to any tribes.
I really don't think it means anything at this point for me.
Guarantee you said great-grandfather was as indigenous as Edward the Confessor.
Or listened to a single indigenous person
That would require a colonizer to be okay without dominating the narrative about Indigenous people and we know how much they hate that
What we call ourselves is our business, for the millionth time.
What you can say with your grandpa is going to be different from how you should address native americans in general. People have different boundaries and when dealing with larger groups, you shouldnt default to how youd talk to someone who you know personally.
I can't speak for your grandfather, I do, on occasion, call myself Indian (usually derisively), but I think calling myself or other Native folk Indians is different than a white British lady using it. It's sort of like Trans folk using the T slur among each other, but it being bad for cis folks.
I use NDN not like we can't use the colonizer slave name they gave us. White lady from the colonizer island should check her pussy before flapping it.
I meant this is in the context of white people saying it. To be fair he grew up with people saying far worse shit and hasn’t lived on the rez since like 1960 so perhaps his perspective is different.
Man I'm just fucking tired of people using slurs at all. I've done all I can to navigate a life where we all get along and live to better each other. If you're grandfather is using a slur that is identified as a slur by multiple people in the here and now, what do you think is right?
Well these are strangers online who I don’t know. Strangers online who I don’t know also say that transsexual is a slur but I actually like the word.
I don't know a single person who thinks transsexual is a slur. It's incorrect because the proper word is transgender. But a slur not so much. Transsexual is the equivalent of coming out. But call me Indian? That's fighting words.
That’s an oversimplification. “Transsexual” is a specific type of “transgender”, and equating the subtype with the umbrella term is invalidating for everyone under the umbrella, both transsexuals and not. bsky.app/profile/2gd4...
I think most folk think Transsexual is an anachronism, so I definitely see people give side eye when its used... but that is distinct from a slur.
In my experience, older Native folks are fine with it, but younger Native folks aren't. Honestly, if you are with Native folk & you know they are chill with it? Fine... whatever... I could care less. But YT videos for public consumption? Yeah... probably best not, too.
Though again; my issue is less any specific mistakes or terminology issues & more... she clearly didn't consult any Native people. Which, honestly, for a smaller channel, I would probably leave it be. But she has hire Jonathan Frakes money, she can hire consultants.
