Speaking as a Canadian (my country is also being threatened) who has lived in the US for 20 years: I am sorry, but there is no "Sane America."

I should add that I originally came to the US for grad school, to study US history. The reason why I remained is that there is a greater demand for US history professors in the US than Canada. Not being independently wealthy, employment has dictated my country of residence.

Because this is where I got a job. I teach history at a university in New Jersey. I also married an American. Life is complicated like that. But I dream of returning home someday. You don't like immigrants?

Sorry if it came out more aggressive than I meant to. My point is that there is no use to apologize with all the non-American who will be affected by Trump's policies (like myself). This is the opportunity to reach out to those who voted Trump, but aren't radicalized and start mending the divide.

You def should be angry and frustrated. But we’re past the point of mending the divide. That hasn’t worked. We need to hold local reps accountable (only 20-40% vote in these elections). Increase voter reg. And fight for better representation than a 2-party system; only 60% vote in pres elections.

I think many of us thought this was happening. So many trump voters from ‘16 and ‘20 sharing they would never vote for him again. This is why the election was such a shock. We thought we were so close to quieting him forever. At 73, I am so tired. Retirement was not supposed to be like this.

That’s how fascism is. It’s quiet until it isn’t. I know several people who said they weren’t voting for him openly. Then they quietly voted for him. It’s why there’s no fixing this divide. And we have reps in Congress who don’t effectively represent us because not enough people show up to vote.

60% is actually not a low rate compared to others. When I say mend the divide, I am certainly not talking about appeasement to the far right (like dining with the Cheneys), rather I think to white male Gen Z voters who can still escape the alt-right pipeline. Information and solidarity can work.

The US has always been divided down the middle when it comes to electing our pres. There hasn’t been solidarity in a very long time. But that keeps people accountable. To stop the spread of fascism, we have to understand why people are reaching for it in the first place. We have to hear them. / 3
