I'm having trouble finding concrete data, but based on this letter I would have to say it's not impossible. The letter specifies "checkpoints" but doesn't spell out if it is only checkpoints at the border. And since we know ICE is literally the AmeriKKKan Gestapo, I wouldn't rule it out

I got my first government ID at 17 after realizing that my school ID didn't mean anything when I was trying to cash traveler's checks. (This was pre-9/11 when you could fly without a state ID.)

My kids are elementary age and Ive always carried their DMV-issued IDs and their social security cards. I thought this was common until a few weeks ago. My 7yo asked if they could carry their cards in their own bag.

I suspect most people don't carry those ID's around with them, but to bring it back to the context of the original post: if I were a parent and an illegal immigrant, and I was concerned about my children being questioned on a school bus, I would not have them carry their IDs with them (at minimum)

My high school daughters constantly lose homework, permission slips, etc. We are really supposed to trust them with irreplaceable government documents? I think this is the point - they expect people to lose them, then they are easier to deport.
