Genuine question to (mostly furry) convention attendees: is seeing sexual words like “horny,” “cum,” “sexy,” on merch… TOO nsfw for an all-ages dealers den? Think of it in the context of people/children of all ages are present, possibly even press. 🧵

Broadly, my line would be: if it's too risque to have in a song lyric on Top 40 radio then it's probably too risque to have in print on merch in a "family-friendly" environment. By this metric: "sexy" is fine, "horny" is probably fine, and "cum" is probably not

Pretty good way of putting it imo, especially comparing it to another art form. I guess you’re right about diff words having diff severity levels.

oooh, that's a really good comparison! i guess yeah looking at popular culture and what's considered OK there would be a good measuring stick for an all ages dealers den experience 🤔

As a leader of a convention in a red state, and as a strong lover of AD spaces, i want to try and uplift nsfw artwork in the right spaces while also keeping the DD/AA sfw/all ages. But i get conflicted about this topic, especially with how strict our con is on the matter.

We’ve let it slide in the past, asking to censor more intense/taboo words like “f*ggot” or “tr*nny”, but it’s like… when does it become “too nsfw?” Where is the line? Images are one thing, but text? It’s hard to say.

I especially want to hear about this potentially from parents, of any age but especially those who are able to read but not old enough to understand.

And please don’t take this post as me supporting censorship or attempting to “hide away” any of our artists who have any capacity of nsfw work— i do not wish to make anybody feel driven out. And pls lmk ur thoughts!!!

I think "sexy" is fine? they sell clothing for BABIES with phrases that include that word. if you'd allow "ass" to be displayed, sexy is probably okay. but words like 'cum, 'horny', 'piss', 'knotty'... these start to feel a bit more adult? but!! i am not a parent! just my two cents

Your opinion still matters!! I was just heavily curious about a parents pov, as well.

would personally err on the side of caution. i think out of all words, anything besides the word 'sexy' i think is too far. slurs (even reclaimed) aren't really appropriate for children. if it's not said in a cartoon it's probably a bit too far

i think what we need is more adult spaces/after dark markets for adult artists to display this work. or even have 18+hours in the normal DD/AA where ppl can then display the more lowkey nsfw/adult merch they have, but that might be more convoluted

As an older sibling of little kids, I think you should consider how difficult/uncomfortable the word would be to explain to a child. Sexy? Pretty iffy, but I think the others are definitely a no. Bear in mind, This IS coming from a sex positive porn artist that separates online & offline life.
