That was a bad policy from Trump and bad execution from Biden. Both can be true. The Biden admin deserves plenty of blame for that.

Not sure I agree. When has there ever been a clean withdrawal from a multi-decade conflict? It was ALWAYS going to be messy. The way the media and Republicans pretended it was a total fiasco was disgusting, especially considering the worst elements of the war were triggered by the GOP.

How it went was they started the war. They botched it at every step. They made a hash of withdrawal plans and then kicked the can to Biden who FINALLY ENDED THE WAR. Then all the blame fell on Biden. It was a neat trick that we all helped succeed.

Trump negotiated a deal that tied Biden's hands. It's 100% on Trump. Don't forget Trump released all the Taliban prisoners as part of that deal. Art of the fuckin' deal indeed! 🙄

The deal Trump made was 1. the Taliban negotiates a peace w/the govt, 2. the Taliban "reduces violence". The Taliban did neither. Trump withdrew troops faster than the deal called for, tweeting out that he wanted to withdraw all immediately... & he stopped all US air support. So this happened:

What would Trump have done differently? Afghan govt officials & commanders in most of the provinces had already cut deals for surrender w/the Taliban by the time Biden took office. Cuz the Taliban reneged on their side of the deal w/Trump... & Trump did zilch. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/0...

Fuckin' Trumper... 🤣 Never stops, does it? Lies, deflections, covering his ass for him, spreading the blame around to make him seem just a little less terrible. Must be a full time job. PRO-TIP: He'll never pay you. 😁

Do they, though? There was never going to be a clean withdrawal from Afghanistan. Getting over 125k people out safely in such a short amount of time seems pretty incredible to me. I don’t know why people just take it for granted that was a botch job. It was always going to be high risk.

It's because Trump set the deadline in one of his insane flurries of shit, and instead of being like "yeah that was stupid we're going to, you know, NOT do that that way", Biden was like "well i guess we'll just do what the crazy man who lost the election said lol" and went along with it.

A little more complicated than you realize. By the time Biden took office, Afghan collapse was already baked in. bsky.app/profile/kgka... www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/0...

Counterpoint: Biden fucked up royally, and allowed Trump's "let's just withdraw lol" plan to go through. Everyone knew doing this would cause the whole thing to collapse, everyone knew this was a stupid fucking idea. Afghanistan withdraw was always fucked, following Trump's lead made it worse.

I wasn't there... but I spent 8 years in the infantry. If the guy before you signs a peace deal & lets the other side welsh on every part of that deal & tweets to the world that the US is pulling out no matter what & half your ally's forces have secretly surrendered... YEAH, YOU'RE FUCKED.

Kaosu Reido @kaosureido.bsky.social

OK, so, the guy before (Trump) said "we're pulling out no matter what". After that guy (Trump) was gone, the new guy in charge (Biden) said "Well that's a terrible idea, but the last guy (Trump) said it, so despite him no longer being in power, guess we'll do it!" Do you see the issue here?

Ben Hamar @kgkaktus.bsky.social

Seriously man, all I hear you arguing is 'Biden should extended the deadline'. And returned 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, cuz that's what it would've taken to stabilize the situation since half the Afghan army had already surrendered. Do I really have to tell you how stupid an idea that is?

Kaosu Reido @kaosureido.bsky.social

It's clear you're not reading my posts, so let me break it down: Biden followed Trump's plan despite everyone knowing it was terrible. He did not attempt something else. It blew up in his face. Everyone knew it would. It's not "there was a right way". It's "why did he do it Trump's way".

Ben Hamar @kgkaktus.bsky.social

Half the Afghan army had surrendered or was negotiating to by January. The Pentagon/CIA had no idea that had happened & was feeding Biden laughably bad info. There. Was. No. Way. To. Fix. It. Except, I guess, your super secret plan to put 30,000 US troops back in.

It really is hilarious how you keep acting like this plan you made up for me is what I'm arguing for. So, you think it was a brilliant idea for Biden to look at Trump's plan, which everyone said was a horrible idea, and go "yep let's do that"? Really? No other option? Just an unforced error?

I get everything you're saying, you're just clearly not reading what I'm actually writing. You're arguing points I never made and trying to say I've got some magic plan for Afghanistan, and when I state objective fact your only response is "I disagree". Lady, you're bad at this.

Ben Hamar @kgkaktus.bsky.social

You say there was some way to fix Afghanistan when Biden took office. I've pointed out that most of the security forces in the provinces had either surrendered or were negotiating to. So share your plan. Don't have one? That's cuz it was unfixable.

Ben Hamar @kgkaktus.bsky.social

There was no fixing it. The Pentagon & CIA had no assets on the ground in the provinces & had no idea that the mass surrenders were already in place... so they gave Biden bad intel. You're confident that the pooch coulda been unscrewed somehow. Tell us how.

Kaosu Reido @kaosureido.bsky.social

You seem to be misunderstanding. I'm not saying "there was a perfect, magical way to leave Afghanistan Biden should have done". I'm saying Biden following Trump's absolutely TERRIBLE plan made things even worse, and showed he and Democrats weren't willing to learn why they lost 2016. Hence 2024.

jul 17, 2025, 2:07 am • 1 0 • view

Ben Hamar @kgkaktus.bsky.social

Again, not following Trump's dumbass plan wasn't an option. Stabilizing the situation after half the Afghan forces had already surrendered meant returning US ground forces. Probably 30,000+ US soldiers. You think Americans would've stood for that? You're. Fucking. Nuts.

Kaosu Reido @kaosureido.bsky.social

"Not following Trumps plan wasn't an option". It literally was, though. The replacement might not have been a great plan, but "let's do what the crazy racist told us to do" is a terrible look. Especially when it collapses even worse than predicted. Biden was a fucking moron, and voters noticed.

WildDogz @untamedk9.bsky.social

There was no way to get out that wasn't fucked. As usual Trump made things so much worse, but by the time he had dug the hole deeper, Biden's only options were to follow the shitty, shitty "Trump engineered" plan, or throw a ton of resources (& lives) into reversing back to get a still shitty plan.

My point is no matter the timeline, it was never not going to get ugly and chaotic in the end. And I’m not sure ignoring the timeline Trump set was a great idea, either. That wasn’t going to be well-received. In short, there was no good way to do it. At least Biden actually did it.

The appropriate thing to do was "not do what the insane racist said to do". Biden fucked up royally. Why do you think we have Trump 2.0? Biden had four years to unfuck things and managed to just show Dems couldn't learn shit. How to leave Afghanistan? I don't know, but I do know, not like that.
