That even into his 30s he was ok with blatant institutional racism, and I’ve never seen a proper reckoning for that. It doesn’t mean he was personally racist, but I have very harsh judgment for anyone who was ok with that as an adult

Did he really have any power in that? Lots of people tolerate institutional racism to a degree. And this book deals well with romney’s views on race and longstanding dissatisfaction w the church’s stance.
Dissatisfaction is nowhere near sufficient when we are talking about that level of racism. He didn’t leave
Should every catholic have left the church bc of the child abuse scandal? Sorry, this isn’t a standard most people apply even to themselves. It makes him quite normal.
If the church said that the child abuse was fine and god actually wanted them to do it, yes
He had absolute power, to not be a part of the religion, and not doing so is a permanent stain on him. There are red lines that shouldn’t be crossed
That’s a pretty unrealistic standard for people, esp in matters of religion, and if everyone follows that path the hardliners get to determine everything. I’m not leaving the dem party over gaza. Maybe i should. It’s a moral stain. But i’m not.
I think that is being far too accepting of heinous beliefs simply because they are religious. In this case it being religious makes it even worse: they claimed it was gods will, and that he told church leadership this directly. This is the thing he devoted his life to
Generally speaking we give people too much leeway when something is considered a religious belief. That organization saying god wanted them to be racist and then expecting us to not judge the adults who were ok with it is a bridge too far for me
I mean sure hut he had nothing to do w this policy and did not internalize it
He internalized it enough to stay in the church when they said god wanted them to discriminate against black people.
That’s patently unfair, and i think u are projecting into his mind Let’s leave this here. We aren’t going to change each other’s minds.
I am never going to give anyone the benefit of the doubt for believing god thinks I am a lesser human being
And romney never did, so there u go. His Dad was a huge civil rights champion, and instilled that in him.
You absolutely cannot be a civil rights champion while belonging to a church that teaches that and teaches that it is gods will
Check out kabaservice’s book.
And yet he was Sorry, people are complicated www.michigan.gov/mdcr/news/re...
None of that matters as long as he stays a member. We could call the klan a religion too, and it would not absolve anyone of being part of it. Going along with blatant anti-black discrimination unequivocally rules out any civil rights bonafides
That’s a ridiculous comparison
Believing and/or staying a member of an organization teaching that as the divine word of god. Staying is indistinguishable from believing in my eyes. There are dealbreakers
In that case there’s nothing i can say. Read up on george romney and tell me what u think.
It’s important to know the specifics of the faith, and what their restrictions actually did. It wasn’t just problematic rhetoric, they were denying people the core part of the faith that was required for the afterlife. It didn’t matter if he didn’t agree, the restrictions meant they were denied
Sure
I am very familiar with his history, I didn’t come to this stance trivially. Black people could not enter the temple, and could never be fully Mormon, particularly in the afterlife which is what matters. He was ok with that and that diminishes anything he did or believed about their time on earth
Well he did a hell of a lot more than me or you
