True for decades now. In every recent presidential election, I plead online that the Dem nominee detail this: the takeover by private equity of hospitals, parts of hospitals (ER, anesthesiology, radiology), medical practices, medical labs, nursing staff - all of it. Instead it's fighting about DEI.
Hospitals and practices being bought are symptoms of the problem. Root cause is insurance companies leave them unable to fiscally operate themselves.
But the private equity folks absolutely bleed ... everyone to death. So I'm not sure I understand. And that's even though I certainly know it's the insurance companies that dictate everything connected to healthcare.

I had to make an appointment for a routine bone density test. In the past, call & appointment was in about 2 weeks. This time, it's in February. This is with the Cleveland Clinic. They no longer do bone density tests at 2 of their locations, plus staff shortage equal delays.

I worked in a hospital for nearly 37 years. And I can tell you there is a huge difference between not for profit hospitals and for profit hospitals. One has the patient as their primary goal, the other profits as their only goal. For profit hospitals should be illegal. Period.

Hard to imagine there was a time when there were no for-profit hospitals. Healthcare was affordable and respectable. The pharmaceutical companies weren’t in bed with the doctors and facilities and they weren’t allowed to advertise.
Most doctors are still not in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. Most, not all of course, but most doctors want to help their patients. Most not-for-profit hospitals do too. But yeah, the trend is certainly going in the wrong direction.

I worked as an RN at a for-profit hospital. They short staffed us all the time by putting nurses on call if the census was too low. It wasn't because they didn't have nurses. So they treated us like shit. I didn't walk room to room, I ran for 12 to 14 hours a day. It wasn't fair to the patients.

I went to a NM ER passing a kidney stone. The pain was extraordinary! I was left among children & others in the waiting area moaning and gasping for 12 hours before we just went home. The ER beds held the most critical. THERE WERE NO BEDS in the hospital, so no real triage. IT’S ALL ABOUT PROFIT.

"turns ERs into cash cows. " The book I read, Bad Company: Private Equity and the Death of the American Dream, paints a much darker picture. PE will indeed use hospitals as cash cows, milk it dry, and when the hospital starts failing, they sell the assets, buildings, land, equipment, everything.
And the way the deals are structured, the PE company is NOT liable for anything - the hospital is - this almost guarantees the hospitals will fail.
And some ER docs order excessive, unnecessary exams, because they have no idea what they are doing. Just ask the Radiologists.
Quality care is still available but at a price, the wait time can be long. The insurance companies are to blame. Greed‼️ No one should have to die because the drugs are unaffordable.

The local (Florida) Not For Profit Hospital Based ER tried to charge my son $600 for a physician the day after a hurricane had closed everything down. He had Covid, which we diagnosed with in home test. Could not find any open doctor or clinic to write Rx for the anti-Covid meds. Had to go to ER,
because the meds must be started within 72 hours (or so it was thought at the time) of symptoms. And the symptoms started before the hurricane came through as we were preparing sandbags and ice chests etc to get through storm. Dr stood at edge of curtain, NO exam, or listening to his chest before
she said "What do you want me to do about it?" WE made the diagnosi, WE made the treatment decision and they expect us to PAY for that privilege? We refused to pay until they could tell us what exactly were we paying for. They never did. The hospital itself waived their fees. It was the ER Phyician

I heard the reason for the doctor shortage was Covid. They created a new concierge Dr model, that caters to the wealthy, where patients pay one flat fee a year for membership, and then are billed for doctor visits outside of maintenance visits. It is a higher level of care, but unaffordable to most.
But doctors can still make their large salary by catering to the wealthy few and within this concierge model of care. I would call it a perversion of medical care for everyone who isn’t wealthy enough to afford the annual five figure fee

My primary was moved to another office far away. And she's really good. They said it was because they only want teaching docs at that clinic. I wonder if some corporate stuff is going on too?

So sorry to hear that. When I lived in Santa Teresa, my kids and I were on NM Medicaid. My primary was in Las Cruces (45 minutes away), my kids’ pediatrician was in Chaparral (hr away). Neither Santa Teresa, nor Sunland Park have a hospital or medical facility. Closest were in El Paso, TX.

I can speak from experience… I had to go to the ER recently… pandemonium! I had to stay 4 days, didn’t get a room, I was in the nurses station and the police were there every night. One night there was a knife fight 40ft from me. It was scary and the place was like an insane assylum.

The New Mexico Patient Care Fund is the reason most of the doctors I work with won't work in NM. That has nothing to do with PE (which only owns, maybe, 30% of the hospitals). It's too easy to get caught up in a medical malpractice issue that isn't your fault. Fix that before crying about PE.

Private equity buys affordable homes and warehouses them, renting many out above market rates.
The way the economy and rising inflation is going, they might end up with vacant homes. Same with apts. Apts in Austin ended up decreasing rents after realizing that empty apts aren't profitable.

Private Equity (PE) is the distillation of everything bad about capitalism - 'strip mining' is a good description. How do I know? I've worked for one PE firm and will never work for another. Try to locate and support non-PE owned health care. Even veternarian practices are being bought up by PE.

Have an OBGYN friend in CA, works at 2 hospitals. 1 university and then another which was sending women in the ER to other hospitals 1/2-1 hour away. He says he couldn’t let that happen. He can’t work for the local FT b/c they don’t offer much healthcare for his family. It’s ironic and wrong.

From what our docs told us (wife and myself), it seems MOST doctors at the hospitals Dignity health just bought have just quit. She had an appt she waited four months for yesterday, an important one and they just told her ‘oh they all quit’ 20 mins after her appt was supposed to start. Santa Cruz ca
☝️☝️☝️ ..and they replace Dr’s with PA’s/NP’s that makes patients (especially with underlying/congenital conditions) go back to (other) ER’s multiple times….so frustrating

Yes! We passed a law in our state to allow the equivalent of PA's. In a MS degree out of our vet school. I was so suprised it passed. Vet associations came out against it. But people got it! And it passed. Not enough but a little progress is good. Next we need to stop these damn monopolies.
Veterinary hospitals have all been bought up by huge corporations and have modeled themselves after their human counterparts. No one needed insurance to own a pet 10 years ago. It’s absurd how costs have skyrocketed yet I can assure you, as a vet assistant, none of those profits have gone to me.
My vet clinic was bought by private equity firm several years ago. My elderly dog needed to have her teeth cleaned and some teeth extracted. It was over $2,000. 😳
