Overall, I think I would give Power Rangers Turbo a C+. But, probably not for the reasons some people would think. Some people like to blame the inclusion of 12 year old Blake Foster as Justin as the reason that the show wasn't as good. Frankly, having watched this again, I don't get the hate.
Sure, he's a 12-year-old kid, and 12-year-old kids can be a bit much at times. But I believe that a lot of his contributions as a Power Ranger are minimized by his haters in order to make a bigger deal out of his character flaws. Many times through the series, he saves their asses.
And not to mention, a lot of the plots that involve him personally? They actually work. While they do put Justin in High School, they don't go out of their way to give him mid-teen to adult problems regularly. They make him relatable to 12-year-olds. Y'know. Exactly the kind of audience WATCHING?!?!
Other things that worked: the Power Transfer from the older generation to the new generation... except maybe for Aisha and Ashley. I feel like more could have been done to establish a relationship between those two in order to justify Aisha giving her powers to Ashley.
Aside from that, Adam had the clear connection with Carlos as his Soccer coach, Cassie got to save Katherine, and of course TJ (with Cassie) saved Tommy from the pit of hell. It makes sense overall, that the Power Rangers powers would be passed on so that lives can be lived. (I know. Shush!)
I also really liked the plot involving the Phantom Ranger, resulting in the debut of the Rescue Megazord. I also liked the inclusion of the Blue Senturion, who was basically the de-facto 6th Power Ranger of the series. Senturion was involved just enough that I never missed him.
Things I didn't like: the over-reliance on detonator plots in the first "half" of the series (the Tommy era of the show) was trite and dull. Almost always, you knew it was going to be delayed until the last possible second. And it either never went off, or something happened that negated the blast.
Dimitria was... inconsistent. And I don't blame Carol Hoyt for this. But, I do not understand why they would make a big deal out of what is basically her defining character trait (that she talks in questions), only to get rid of it in the TJ era of the show.
It was almost as if they were making things up as they go, and whoever was the showrunner (probably Jonathan Tzachor) was like "Eh, fuck it. I don't wanna make her the question lady anymore." I thought her original character was a good twist on the Zordon mentorship.
But then... when TJ and crew took over... it's like she BECAME Zordon. So like... what's the point? Another thing I don't like is, again no fault of the actors, but Hillary Shepard Turner was the better Divatox. And I think that I've outlined why before. But I'll do it again.
Carol Hoyt (yes she dual rolled it for 25 episodes) was a more serious interpretation while HST was more comedic and over the top. But, I am giving this a pass because again, no fault of the actors, and HST was on maternity leave. They had to do SOMETHING!
My issues is just cars. That's it. I am not a fan of that as there powers and design.
Turbo is 100% a product of its era. Big souped up supercars was VERY much the rage back then.
