Today, I will be meeting with three lawmakers who want to eliminate Missouri’s income tax. If you could ask them a question, what would it be?
Today, I will be meeting with three lawmakers who want to eliminate Missouri’s income tax. If you could ask them a question, what would it be?
Who will pay for road repairs?
Given the seemingly massive Federal budget reduction efforts by DOGE ($2T) and the fact that MO is a net “taker” relative to its own Federal tax contributions, how can you possibly cut state income taxes in this environment and expect to maintain even basic essential services?
How do you intend to recoup those funds?
How will they replace the lost revenue? If they replace it with a sales tax, that would shift the tax burden to lower/medium income citizens and away from businesses and wealthier citizens.
How does a state survive when you starve it to death?
Are they wanting to replace it with a sales tax? If so, even the poor will pay then.
Do they remember a guy named Sam Brownback, and do they remember what happened to Kansas as a result of Sam Brownback doing EXACTLY what they're proposing?
I do!
Me too! The tax scheme failed miserably, turned KS blue, huge deficit & he was sent overseas as a ‘faith advisor’ or some such.
Ks isn't exactly blue by any means. It's purple in the populated areas but the state legislature is dominated by the rural red.
After Brownback the state flipped, changed some since then, opened the door for lees GOP.
I live in Kansas, and I stand by my statement. The GOP has a supermajority in the legislature, due to gerrymandering. While Johnson County, Lawrence and parts of Wichita and Topeka are blue or purple. Trump easily won KS.
Wish you weren't, but you are 100% correct. Even though the state has some blue and purple pockets, the state is still overwhelming red in both state and federal legislative branches.
Correct, gerrymandering screwed the elections.
Broadcasting from Wisconsin here, we've had our own Elon Musk for years, his name is Robin Voss. The worst government interference gerrymandering can provide.
They are so desperate & awful. Sarah H Sanders (our gov) is an absolute chud, so I feel your pain.
We have a decent governor, but the legislators are awful, absolutely awful, with a few dems trying their best to keep the dams of stupidity from breaking
Ok, Stad, enjoy KS.
Thanks for posting this-I did not remember this. And a fascinating read for me
I was over in KC right on the end of it, and even my -libertarian- friend was PISSED at Brownback's actions. This anti-tax shit ruins EVERYTHING.
Anti tax rhetoric is a quick hit to the drunken lizard brain stem
Yes, the founding of Brownbakistan. I remember this.
I came here to say this, but knew in my heart it had already been said.
Yes ask them how this plan is different. If it’s not then what is the goal of implementing it?
Where is the money going to come from to keep the state going? What will they have to cut??
Did they look at what’s happening in WV? Justice cut state income tax to get elected to the Senate, effectively squandering a surplus in one year.
Are they going to work for free if this passes? If not, where will the money come from to pay their salaries?
With elimination of revenue from state income tax, and loss of 30% of education funding when the federal Dept of Ed is eliminated, how do we fund our schools?
Does income tax fund schools in MO? I am in IL, but moved from TX. TX has no income tax and schools are funded through property taxes. Sales tax is high. Do not recommend.
“Who’s gonna pay for it?!”
1: What is the replacement tax? 2: Is the new tax fair and equitable? 3: How will this new tax system improve Mo. citizen’s lives?
Why are you willing to have Missouri be a national joke? Lowest teacher pay. Arming toddlers. How is any of this helpful to a regular Missourian? How will any of this grow Missouri's economy?
Special Ed teacher here…. With the loss of Federal funding for education, how will districts absorb the increased cost needed to educate sped students? Also, how can you go to church each week and say you proposed a regressive tax scheme that puts the greatest burden on the shoulders of the poor?
How will infrastructure be paid for?
Why do you not want to fill potholes?
How do you define a “fair tax” distribution? Because from where I stand, every single tax other than income tax disproportionately targets the poor.
What is Paw-Paw fruit?
What will finance everyday services?
Which government operations do you intend to shut down? Fire protection? The National Guard?
Do you believe in the Constitution of the United States? All of it?
Why do you hate people? That's the first thing I'd ask them. Second, I'd say, are you a Christian? Because if you say you are, I'll tell you why you're not.
Who will pay for your raises, you idiots?
I think several blue states need to come together and withholding all taxes to government. Demand change
Who are the oligarchs, theocrats, corporations, and special interests they are purposefully prioritizing with this change and when is their press release scheduled to openly announce their full abandonment of the people in their state? How much is their reward?
They will replace it with a regressive tax
how do they plan to make up for the loss of monies to the State? (I know the answer...sales tax and property taxes...which will hurt the poor and middle class disproportionately)
In the worst case scenario where Missouri loses large portions of its federal funding does the state have any intention of using its surplus for the good of the people, or do they intend to continue to use it to fund corporate cuts and continue with the plan to eliminate income tax.
Ask them if they enjoy roads, bridges, parks, libraries, free school for their kids?
I would ask, “so at what point did you know you wanted to be an asshole?”
lol!!!
Where will the revenue come from to fix roads or pay for schools?
What programs are being eliminated? How are they going to get revenue. Sales tax hurts the poor, who consume what they earn, thus taxed on everything. While the wealthy are taxed on a small percentage of their earnings.
Show me the effing math. And how is it not going to comprimise key state services to Missouri's most vulnerable citizens.
how will the revenue be replaced? shoot down the growth pays for tax loss nonsense
Can you start using money towards things Missourians actually need instead of eliminating them?
Please update your effing software so car dealerships can add sales tax at POS. The number of expired temp plates is ridiculous
What is the plan to offset revenue lost by eliminating income tax? I bet nothing and rely on more federal funding.
How will you maintain your roads? Will you give up your job as a rep since there will be no money to fund the government?
Why do they bend the knee for rich greed to create an unfair tax rule?
Can they make it a priority to stop taxing social security and pensions please?
With the current Administration cutting funding, how will the State provide essential services without it? Perhaps a restructure to make it more equitable may be in order. If citizens are complaining it is usually because lower income is being hit hard. Usually legislature is appeasing the wealthy.
Will they pledge that they aren't shifting the tax burden to property and food and sales taxes and on to the backs of fixed income retirees?
Does Missouri still have their "luxury" tax? I moved back to MN in 2005.
What the Fuck are you thinking?
Why do you want to burden the poor (via sales taxes) with subsidizing infrastructure that disproportionately benefits the investor class?
Brownback merely cut taxes in KS, and the economy tanked. How will completely eliminating taxes work any better? How many jobs and services will be cut?
Who benefits the most from such a plan and what leads them to their conclusion?
Ask them, if they want to cut state income taxes, are they also willing to reject all federal funds above those contributed to the federal government by Missouri tax payers? Red states keep cutting state income taxes while continue to mooch of federal dollars often paid by blue state tax payers.
Please ask them if they are really that stupid.
How will we make up for this loss of revenue? What will be cut?
Given the current chaos at federal level and the stated goal of pushing an increasing level of budgetary responsibility onto the states, why now?
I don’t want to sound racist, but that’s some rich white boy shit.
@piperformissouri.bsky.social will they increase tax in another area, for example, personal property or sales tax? Sales tax increase would hurt the lower middle class and below.
Would campaign contributions be subject to a sales tax since these lawmakers have been bought?
Ope!
Can you not learn from Kansas’ mistakes? This has been tried before and failed miserably.
How are you going to pay the state workers? 65% of the annual general revenue comes from state income tax. What income stream is going to take its place? With cuts coming from federal aid, and Trump saying he wants to put more back on the states, like FEMA, where is the money coming from?
I’d ask them: “…what problem, exactly, are you trying to solve?”
maybe add”and can you answer that in 5 words or less?”
I love this open-ended question.
Yes!! That is great first question as it gets to the heart of why someone is trying to make changes. You will learn, very quickly, if they are well-meaning or not.
It's a great question, but I know they'll spew a confusing explanation involving economic distortion or some such garbage. They are wormy and won't let you pin them down easily.
… that’s where the “exactly” comes in. In business, you’d ask “why” five different ways to get to the underlying reason. In this case, she’ll likely get a lie (“because tax cuts create jobs”)but not the real reason: “because our big donor wants to pay less, and wants to screw you Poors. Again.”
Which programs for underprivileged communities do they intend to cut? How do they expect to make up the loss revenue?
What exactly do those taxes cover that you are willing to give up...roads, bridges, schools, your paycheck?
What problems are you seeking to solve by doing this? What problems will this create for the state? Do you have a plan to solve those problems?
I have a lot, but I don't think any of them would be welcome at this meeting. 🫢
How many poor people are you going to kill, starve and make homeless, you pricks?
Then who would pay for the roads and parks?
bylinetimes.com/2025/02/07/s...
How safe do you feel on Missouri’s bridges?
"Have you sought psychiatric help yet, or is the exercise of insanity a part of your job description?
Missouri is rock bottom in the ranking for teachers’ salaries. How is this going to help?
How will roads be repaired? How will you pay for infrastructure?
Are you people just plain stupid?
Any phrase containing “you people” does not reflect well on the one asking
You are correct. Apologies.
HOW are you going to pay for roads, electric repairs and keep gas pipes in working condition? WHO is going to pay for natural disasters? WHAT money does the state have reserved for these things? WHY do they feel it's a good thing for the PEOPLE to make such changes. Look at TEXAS! Poor state!
Is there anything — anything — you consider a public good?
Good one. Pun intended.
How much money does the federal government contribute to the State of Missouri budget? (This week shows federal money is not guaranteed. Legislators better know how much federal $$$ they could lose before they decide they don’t need state income tax revenue.)
while that sounds nice… where does the money come from? in texas, EVERYTHING costs… parks, tolls, zoo, botanical garden…. and everything else costs a lot more. eliminating it but paying thru other means. get rid of property taxes. thats double taxation
I have been saying this since I moved here from Texas, you are being double taxed. You pay for the same institutions on your personal property taxes that you do on your real estate taxes. And you paid taxes on your car when you bought it, plus every year. It's stupid!!
i’ve been saying it forever. it sucks. i waited until jan 2 to buy a vehicle bc taxes in dec will be low since i owned clunker jan 1
Will you eliminate your own salaries then? Because HOW WILL WE PAY FOR ALL THE THINGS??
Where will the money come from to maintain health services, roads, bridges and schools? Will property and house taxes be raised to make up for the loss of funds?
How will this impact homeowner's property tax and any other use taxes Missouri currently has? What new taxes are they considering, and what impact will those (use) taxes have on the poor?
“Why do you choose to live in Missouri?”
Gfy
Where will state funds then come from you Republican morons?
Do you really think that the bribes you get from billionaire wealth hoarders are really going to be enough to buy the armored vehicles and 24/7/365 armed security you are going to need once your flesh and blood constituents figure you sold them out for pittance?
Where are your salary and health insurance going to come from?
Do you plan to give up your healthcare coverage to help close the budget gap? Are you willing to pick which of your kids gets to keep their coverage?
If we have less revenue, do you plan to give up part of your salary and expense account?
What vital services to the public do they seek to destroy? How is Missouri going to take care of business, or is it going to become a federal welfare baby like other red states?
Given the loss of income tax based revenue, how do you plan to fund the state expenditures?
Replace it with what?
What’s the plan to pay for State budgets?
I'm not from Missouri but this would be my question as well.
This shifts tax burden to the consumer. Since lower income individuals pay a much larger % of their income for basic needs than high income. Exactly the plan, lower taxes on the wealthy, since that 3rd house won't come cheap.
I grew up in SE Missouri. I love the Missouri of my childhood. I hate what Missouri has become. Ignoring voters on prop B in 1999 for CNC was the Rubicon for them. They got away with it and never looked back. Everything has tilted for the rural/Christian/conservative since then.
Why is Missouri ranked at or near the bottom in most important categories?
When trump accomplishes his proposed education cuts of $2270 per student, or over $2 billion dollars, how will they replace it?
Will all of our essential services become pay for play to have the fire department or police show up? Where will the funding come from that will replace this income flow? Thanks Jess!
How do they plan to fund the state government and its programs?
Maybe just ask them why they hate poor people so much. I’d suggest using one of my favorite therapist phrases “help me understand” “Help me understand this disdain you have for people living in poverty. You’re really expressing hateful behavior toward poor people. Help me understand that”
Where else do you plan on getting the revenue that Missouri's income tax covers?
So how are they planning to fund education, healthcare, infrastructure, and basic things like the police, fire fighters and ambulance services?
How do they plan to replace funding for education, while making sure Missouri’s education rating doesn’t drop below 30, as well as DOJ and healthcare funding, where MO’s rating is at 45 for both? And what’s their plan to improve the ratings for all 3?
Why, since we know there is something they aren't telling us!
Please publish the states accounts with no income tax income (with impact assessment on services and lives.)
Texas is one state with no income tax. They have higher property and sales taxes in their place. They also take in state revenues from its Oil and Gas businesses. That is unique to only a few states, but not so much Missouri. Bass Pro makes only so much with Tourism.
Do you pay federal income tax?
Yes, no state.
"Why do you want to wealth-redistribute?"
If by giving up the income tax, what will increase to offset the running of each community?
What is your plan if income tax is eliminated? What will increase? You have to get the money somewhere.
Precisely how do you think you get paid? And your staff? Your office supplies? And the security personnel who keep you safe? Where do you think the money comes from for these things?
Isn’t their state low enough on the charts of accomplishments among the states?
Ask why states with higher taxes have higher standards of living and states with low taxes are consistently in the bottom.
Why are they turning Missouri into project 2025, when they deny they no nothing about it? And why do they keep denying the will of the people on abortion when the people voted in favor of it!
What is the current budget surplus? Are current receipts from sales taxes and other non-federal revenue sources stable in an economic down-turn? What have you been smoking?
How can you justify taxing the poorest people in your state more than the richest?
Also, what is the plan to raise revenue without income tax? Raising property taxes? Business taxes? Sales tax? Prayer?
Exactly
How will the state afford to educate its people? Pay for state police? Maintain roads and bridges? Respond to storms and disasters? Provide services for the disabled, sick, elderly, and poor? You know, the things states need to provide for their residents.
1. On average how much did property and sales taxes rise in states that abolished income tax? 2. Without the income tax system, fixed income and poorer people will pay a much higher proportion of their income in flat taxes than wealthier people, why is this fair?
3. Have you spoken directly to your fixed income constituents and informed them how eliminating income taxes will affect them?
Sorry for the extra questions. I got carried away.
Ask them how poor they feel; if they bought too much house; if they eat out too much; if they take several vacations each year.
We live in a taxed base society. Who and how will it be paid for. No taxes, no state. No taxes, no state reps...
Oh, the usual. "Who's paying you to do this?"
Missouri is already as poor as a cockroach on a twice-chewed corn cob. Just how low does the state want to go?
Can Missouri be annexed by Illinois?
What is your end goal with eliminating Income Tax? Has this ever worked in the history of it not working?! Show your work.
Where will the money come from to fill the void this creates? And WHY?!?
When did you stop beating your wife?
Ask them what @copusadic.bsky.social said: What do income taxes in Missouri cover now, and what will fund these things moving forward? Of course, go in with a list of things income taxes cover. Then, ask them what will their voting constituents will say when a, b, and c, are no longer available.
How do you plan to make up the revenue? What fees? Because in tax free states like Florida. You actually pay more when fees are added in. The state government just hides what it taxes you better.
How much will you increase property taxes and sales taxes?
Who's going to pay for things. The Blue States aren't going to.
Bingo! I’m in a blue state and our taxes are give way more than we use. I’m hoping that ends too!
I'm believing that there needs to be a Bill that says your state doesn't get more than it pays in. And if you need emergency money for a disaster you get 5 years to pay it back. We need to start hitting every Rep and Senator with this. Why pay for these states when they treat us like shit.
Doesn’t that mean that property taxes will go up? That’s usually what happens in other states without income taxes.
Which corporations and millionaires/billionaires are going to cover the lost revenue in the budget?
How do you plan to make up the loss of this money & what will it mean to the consumers & businesses in MO?
1)How will they ensure it isn’t going to weigh hardest on the poor, retired and sick? 2)Will they make sure not to increase sales tax to make up the deficit? 3) why are they making Missouri so unattractive for young professionals to stay or move here? And this-Stop overwhelming local government.
Who does this serve? What successful countries have eliminated this?
Colorado has the disgusting TABOR Taxpayers Bill of Rights since mid 90s. It’s awful. Rs love it. We are not able to fund education, housing, infrastructure, making it hard for employers to get workers because Cost of Living has gone up, but services go down
Why would we pay you a salary?
What is your plan to fund education?
What is their plan to stop rural hospital closures: ingrams.com/article/ks-m...
How will the outcome be different than what happened in Kansas (tax cuts) ?
What’s going to happen when there is no federal funding of any kind when trump and Elon end all federal programs and tell the states it their problem?
Where is the state going to make up for the lost revenue? Raising property taxes? Sales taxes? Personal property taxes?
Why aren’t you doing anything to stop musk and trump
Ask to see their revenue and expenditure forecasts by category so you can see the future sources of revenue and what they will still fund. Income tax is only side of the equation. They need budgetary projections to see the whole picture.
How are you going to make up the shortfall of money without effecting those with lower incomes?
Make them admit that “expanding the base” means sales tax on everything. Oh and they don’t plan on zeroing out sales tax on food. This plan is regressive and will hurt the poor.
Will there be an increase in other taxes(Sales, property, business, etc)?
Do your reservations have boil water advisories,we have over 100 in Canada. Maybe we can help one another...
I'm in the Ottawa Valley and haven't heard of any. Where are they & why?
Not as many, quebec has the best quality, meaning lowest PH. Mosquitoes are a human deterent there.
TY
What programs are being cut and how much of a kickback are they getting from the donor class?
Do they enjoy roads? Shame if those were to just…disappear. Not even going to ask if they care about child poverty or schools cuz we already know they DGAF.
How will you fund your Special Interests? Will this come out of YOUR pockets?
How will they fund schools, roads, disasters (since Trump is going to end FEMA) and all the lawsuits against them for not funding what they're supposed to do.
If their solution is to increase sales tax property tax etc. they've lost their minds. We don't have a big tourism industry like Texas. You can't rely on making money from non-Missourians. It's just going to make things cost more for us which systematically makes things worse for lower income folks.
Do they understand how their salary works? If they want to work for free we could just allocate their paychecks to Medicaid instead of getting rid of income tax. You know, like how their constituents voted for an increase in that field ages ago?
How will they avoid becoming like Texas? We have no income tax yet our property taxes are breaking us and the sales tax
Do they want to avoid it? It's just another way of separating the owning class and the owned. It's quite clear the GOP want us to own nothing, be tied to the grind until we break, and to like it. There must be so many Texans who've been driven from their homes by taxes.
When will Missouri stop being a welfare state living off of funds from other states?
How do they plan to maintain Missouri's infrastructure.
How are they planning to replace that revenue?
Can we vote on your salaries instead of you getting to decide then? Oh, and cut Bailey’s since he wastes money on frivolous lawsuits?
Did Joe Biden win the 2020 election?
And you will replace the lost revenue how?
What we wish we could ask: 1. Who got to you? 2. Do you need help? What we need to ask: 1. Can you tell me why? Meaning; what’s the benefit to taxpayers and to the state? 2. Which economic scholars and advisors have you consulted when making this decision? Why do they believe it’s a good idea?
How are they going to fund basic services?
If Missouri requires a balanced budget (no deficit spending) show where the loss from no income tax will be made up (what taxes will go up?) . If the tax loss will be reflected in the new budget, what services will be cut? Make them commit
How you gonna pay for state police? Electricity in state buildings? Fixing roads?
How will you replace the lost revenue?
How do they expect to replace that source of funds?
Ask them if they would be willing to personally cover the difference.
Do you have anything to say before we take you to prison!
I’ll echo another poster below — “what problem are you trying to solve”. You’ll learn intent and if they are truly interested in making life better for ALL of their constituents in less than a minute.
In order to keep services at present levels, how do you expect to recoup that revenue?
Why they think their God will forgive them for their forsaking the poor to the benefit of their bank balances?
whatever the response, "is that your final answer"?
How do you plan to pay for anything? What FEES are you going to increase?
How do you plan to pay for education, fire/police protection, infrastructure, etc.? Are you planning on using up the billions in surplus? Are you planning on bankrupting the state?
Who will pay for infrastructure, law enforcement & schools? Will it all fall on local communities to fend for themselves?
Since FEMA is to be disbanded, how will the state pay for the weather disasters we will see in the coming years?
By siphoning off tax dollars from blue states just like red states always do.
How are we going to fix roads, bridges, upkeep of parks, tree trimming, trash pickup on the side of the road?
Ask them what 4⁄7 + ⅛=? When they can't, explain it's a fifth grade math problem and they shouldn't eff around with things they can't possibly understand.
Let them...
Given Trump’s goal of making Canada a state, what is your plan to ensure that our children in Missouri will be able to attend school in the 51st worst schools in this great nation?
Why don’t you care about the people of your state?
Why? And also, WHAT?!
How will the state fund its obligations? Which are not being met now for education .
How does removing a state income tax help the people of Missouri? Make them spell it out for you.
States with out income tax have higher property and sales tax. Gas taxes have also increased. We pay: 18.4 cents for the federal government 18.455 cents for the state 10.96 cents for County 32.89 cents for the Regional Transportation Commission which is for road improvements in the county.
Will that help raise its ’F’ grade on quality of life? Would it raise it from being 30th in wealth? 45th in healthcare..?
What other sources of income will come into play? Sales tax? Industry?
California's Federal taxes??
lol💯🎯
Who sponsors you? Who do you work for?
How does this not serve the rich and continue to weaken working class families?
Where are the funds to pay law enforcement, fire and paramedic services and government going to come from? What would we have to cut? And how does this impact our economy? Our security?
Do you plan to impose a sales tax to replace the lost revenue, and if so could you please provide a detailed plan of how this will not over burden our middle and poorer citizens. Because that is what it is designed to do.
Why do you want to increase property and sales taxes on the citizens? Why should UNEARNED income be taxed at a 0 % rate when earned incomes will be heavily taxed buying food? What prevents the tax savings from being exported out of state to the benefit of foreign jurisdictions?
