We were babysitting my daughter's cat a few weeks ago & he managed to push out of a screened window. We were in a panic (coyotes!). He was out over 24 hrs before daughter found him hiding in a bush in our front yard. When she pulled him out he was shaking with fear, poor baby. Happy to be found!

We're in a little city at the base of the San Gabriels in So. CA., with a "green space" immediately behind our back yard. It's a hiway for all sorts of wildlife-bears, deer, etc., all of which we see pretty frequently. We'll hear the coyotes howling on that slope and it can be a pretty scary sound.

There are many secular homeschoolers & we do it for many different reasons. Most of the kids in the circles I’ve belonged to around the world (travel for work was ours) were better prepared for college and life than most of their public school peers. I still want my taxes to pay for public schools.

I know people who have homeschooled & also work in an elementary schools with kids who come in after a few years of homeschooling. It's a true spectrum. Some of the homeschoolers do great, their caregivers are competent. But many of those kids arrive in the 4th grade, feral and behind in the basics.

I was fortunate to be able to homeschool my son--we took a hit economically, but he had spacial needs. I studied how to do it for a year before k4 started, and our family poured our time into it. My 20yo son is whip smart, a critical thinker, and had plenty of social time with others. Worked for us.

Do you not realize that there are specialized teachers for older homeschoolers? My teenager takes a creative writing class from a college professor/published author. My science nerd takes 3-4 classes with actual scientists. Fundamentalist homeschooling is not the only kind of homeschooling.

Without public education, children would need to be home schooled, with someone staying home to school them. Most households need two paychecks to make ends meet. Defunding schools is mostly a ploy from the right to keep wives at home and out of the workplace. Uneducated is another goal of the GOP.
