When I was in college in the 80s, it was common for US History high school courses to stop at WW I or WW II. The most impossible college history class to access was Modern US History, because everyone wanted to fill that gap in their knowledge.
We finally updated our U.S. history curriculum. We manage to get to 2008. 🤷🏼♀️

9/11 is hard to teach because our history education is Eurocentric and Western. Students have very little knowledge base for 9/11. Also,many states only require 2 years of history for graduation. My state happens to require 3. World History and 2 years of American. It should be 4 in my opinion.

In my hs social studies classes in the late 1960s they never got anywhere near the Civil Rights Movement. In my senior year when I complained, the teacher invited ME to give a class on it. Me! I did it and that one day was the only time CRM got treated at all.

when i took it in the 80s the teacher went from present to past, almost certainly because he wanted to complain about Reagan, by the end we were just at the end of the Vietnam War

My 7th grade kiddo had that unit this year. They were given an assignment to create WWII propaganda & instructed that it MUST be historical, not based on current events. Which I think was partly covering themselves from potential complaints & partly due to it making the kids curious.

It would be great if school systems could institute adult learning events where presenters could be brought in to outline the way the government works. Most adults don’t know. Most adults think opinion is what government is about. But we need to understand the civic duty aspect far more.

I attended the 1974 Great Kanawha Text Book protest that kicked off a lot of the issues in education now. My state started multiple religious schools not long afterward. The religious leaders in the state went insane & the state has slid straight downhill since then. Now they have vaccine exemptions
Simple way to comply with that stupid order is to say, "Some people say there were irregularities in the 2020 election. But no proof of that has ever been shown." There's nothing more beyond that Trump didn't concede until Jan 9, 2020 & still says he won. But it's pure projection on his part.
I heard about this. The damage that is feared is a generation of kids growing up with this as a shared concept. Hard to unlearn. I'm from a generation that was taught "slavery was a bad we did, but Lincoln fixed it and we are good now." Didn't become woke until adulthood. Unlearned a lot. Damage.

Several bills are already in the pipeline mandating 10 commandments, daily bible readings. One bill already passed the house allows parents to report teachers for allowing students access to books the parents deem inappropriate. The felony penalties are long prison sentences.
