Missouri passed a law in 2023 that prohibited healthcare providers from performing pelvic exams on unconscious or anesthetized patients without their informed consent because IT WAS LEGAL TO PERFORM A PELVIC EXAM ON AN ANESTHESIZED PATIENT WITHOUT CONSENT UNTIL 2023…

It’s been legal in many states!! I’ve probably been examined unconsented given how many surgeries I had. I was even disabled by an unconsented procedure in surgery

Yes, it's important to note they will still do this in emergencies if the diagnosis/treatment needs the exam. Before it was just for training, basically you're out cold so why not let everyone feel you up and get some practice on a warm body 🤬 "it's not like you'd know"

Working in an Er for decades I can tell you that I’ve seen dramatic injuries in the pelvic region that required life saving intervention on pts that were intubated and unable to sign. They would have died under this bill. For those putting your feet on the dash in a moving vehicle, that’ll do it.

This bill isn’t for those situations. It’s for when you go in for a surgery on your head or neck or colonoscopy & the hospital decides it’s a good time to let a class of interns stick their hands inside your pelvis to see what a uterus/ovaries feel like. It’s to stop assault of patients.

Pap smears don't have to be performed in an office any longer. In Australia they are done at home via a mail in swab, which results in more people with an uterus doing it. Of course in North America it's not approved, I am sure bc it stops a billable visit.

Solving a problem that didn't exist until they solved it. If the patient can't consent, who can? Relatives? The State? Always prepare an Advanced Care Directive to protect your health and life. Your primary care provider, formerly known as your doctor, can help fill one out!

Okay, so women would go to their gynecologist for their yearly pap smear and pelvic exam, and the medical staff would ask for consent? Or women became unconscious with their legs in the stirrups, and the doctor, speculum in hand, and had to ask for consent? Is this like a zygote is a person?

This is like go for minor surgery having nothing to do with a vagina, and while sedated, a few interns grab some experience doing pelvic exams. You are never the wiser. That’s what I remember from living there when the law passed.

1) Basically the hospital was saying that the patients “consented” automatically by a) coming to a teaching hospital and b) signing the contract to get whatever procedure it was that they knew about. In some cases the “permission” was buried in fine print, in others it was worded so vaguely that

The law is about pelvic exams THAT ARE NOT WARRANTED. It happened to me at 17 in an ED. I was awake, I said "no" over and over, but I couldn't scream or fight back because I was weak from hemmoraghing. I was told they could do whatever they wanted b/c it was a teaching hospital. (1/2)

Time was taken away from treating my life-threatening condition to "teach" an intern how to violate a child's sense of safety and create horrible, unwarranted pain without a conscience. I was so ashamed and violated that I didn't tell anyone until two decades later. I SAID, "NO!" REPEATEDLY.
