Just finished Barbara Wineapple’s The Impeachers. If Andrew Johnson had been found guilty, Ohio Senator Benjamin Wade would have become president. He was a Republican so Radical, he believed in votes for women as well as Black men. Recommend the book - so many parallels between Trump and Johnson.

Reconstruction effort ended with the 1877 Hayes compromise. Southern Dems let Republicans take presidency in exchange for removing federal troops protecting new freedman in the South. Troops were wanted out West to clear native tribes from the plains for “ Manifest Destiny.” What a country !

There's still time. We can do it now. When we correct the error in '26, Democrats in Congress can revive all the safety net programs, but only the blue states are going to be ready to receive funding, so only blue states are going to get funding until red states rebuild their safety nets.

Amen ! Thank you for this comment. That this country rewarded slave owners and has repealed every civil rights legislation that was won with blood is a testimony to the bigotry and cruelty that prevails. Punishing the confederates would have prevented a Trump presidency.
