You know, we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and grief by punishing the Confederates…
You know, we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and grief by punishing the Confederates…
Or just went ahead and let them secede.
They were punished, they never recognized it as punishment, they were convinced they were martyrs. It’s the righteous cause they never surrendered. That’s on Protestant religion. Education would have been the answer, but that was left in the control of the states and their version of history.
They weren’t punished. It is the root of all evil in our country But dog. Why are you using the tools of today’s slavers? You coulda just clicked the link. Doing it this way deprives the actual source of the visit, yourself the surety that the summary is correct, and is of any chance to respect you
You’re quite right! I should’ve posted a link to an original source (or, perhaps, linked to a Wikipedia page on the topic at hand). Ngl, when i post a screenshot of a Google ai overview, it’s from online exhaustion (thus, it’s me being lazy…) Good link to bypass Google’s ai overview: udm14.com
10/10 response
Ty
It also apparently works like a charm to put the word "fuck" in your query.
Also excoriating the morals of the supporters of Jim Crow
Or better yet punishing trump.
R'Amen
Absolutely. Sherman is turning in his grave.
Should have deported every single one of them
If only we would learn from history. Forgiveness is not always the best way to go.
I’m convinced forgiveness is a grift invented by predatory men to escape natural justice
My husband always makes that comment. Didn’t get President Lincoln anywhere by being merciful.
Or enforcing the 14th amendment on our current problem before he became one.
It’s never lost on me the amount of sympathy we can muster for a white man. “Think about his future…” and he eighty fucking three
Just goes to show that the goal was unification (economics) over everything else. It’s always been a false belief that ending slavery was important. If being humane was valued then, there would have been punishment for the atrocity of slavery. White supremacy was allowed to survive
Yep.
And jailing Nixon
Right????
Or holding the racist women accountable that made martyrs out their war dead. See the Ladies Memorial Auxiliary history for confirmation
Been saying this for decades.
IKR? Letting those bastards off the hook really set the country up for long term failure.
Yep.
✅ Germany doesn't have nazis problem b/c they punished nazis Brazil doesn't have a coup problem b/c they jailed & prosected insurrectionists immediately S. Korea doesn't have a dictator problem b/c they don't have a treasonous political party & judicial system only US tolerates trump/GOP SHIT
Same with Ford pardoning Nixon. “The country’s been through enough.” The fuck it has. Without justice, we can’t move forward.
Amen.
Just finished Barbara Wineapple’s The Impeachers. If Andrew Johnson had been found guilty, Ohio Senator Benjamin Wade would have become president. He was a Republican so Radical, he believed in votes for women as well as Black men. Recommend the book - so many parallels between Trump and Johnson.
So few were punished for their taking arms against the Union. (Not counting those who died on the battlefield, I'm taking about the leaders and financiers after the war)
Yep. Re-admitting them to the Union was a huge mistake. They should have been a territory for 50-60 years, with schools established for freedmen, and integration throughout the U.S.
To use a golf term: Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda
No lies detected
Backing down from Reconstruction was the beginning of the end.
Reconstruction was dead from the outset with a sympathetic Southerner in charge. The only real implementation of R/C protocols came during Grant's 2 terms.
Abraham Lincoln intended mercy and assimilation of freed slaves. After a loyalty oath, the South could form their own govt. He was assassinated before he could implement his vision of Reconstruction. Ending Reconstruction involved a deal between politicians and Hayes, who wanted to be POTUS.
This is the root of most of the issues in the US
Ask General Pershing at the end of WWI. Same idea.
With extreme prejudice.
BINGO!!! Everyone was so quick to try to reunify a broken nation that they forget to teach the important lesson of repentance before paving over our violent and immoral history in the name of forgiveness and progress and it's a wound we've never fully closed and a lesson we refuse to learn.
Wow. I work with women with PTSD, and you just described basically every abusive man’s mentality. They rage, plead, cry for forgiveness and forgetting before ever actually repenting and changing. And the cycle continues. And the woman ends up more abused.
This is all just the vomit and indigestion of the failed reconstruction.
Or, stay with me, just letting them secede.
No. Allowing the cruelty of slavery to continue simply because we don’t want to deal with it isn’t okay.
That’s a valid point. But also wonder how things would have worked out differently . . .
Absolutely on point White northerners let them off the hook
Yep, yep and yep.
We should have flattened the South and kept it that way. And pushed down every rebellion until they got the hint. We always placate to white guys with money.
Simply not normalizing them would have helped. But Lincoln was assassinated and then we got Johnson, and that was that.
BINGO!
Modern American history would have been so much better
I suggested that Britain should have sunk the Mayflower and all the puritan religious fanatics with it. 🤣🤣🤣 The US would not be any worse off!
And going after the Nazis that fled to America after WWII instead of hiring them
Not to mention all the Nazis that just stayed in Germany and kept their jobs as cops and govt officials
And the Nazis who weren’t punished during the Nuremberg Trials because the U.S. wanted to keep West Germany from aligning with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Oh yeah. Lots of crossover between these two groups lol.
And the Nazi grandkids who still venerate their Nazi past, leaving roses on their memorials and graves, and impeding access to the files of their crimes (just was in Germany researching this, true story).
And we should have shut down the company that made the poison gas for the extermination camps.
I love this game. Do IBM next!
Yep, they made the punch card machines the Nazis used for census, and to track down Jews for sending to the camps.
Wow, just learned this! They made VW and Hugo Boss too. Also, Chanel stole their perfume formula from a Jewish man who was murdered in the war.
Not to mention the Swarovski family were registered nazis and enthusiastic supporters of Hitler from the very beginning in Austria.
Palette Cleanser: Leica Cameras was cool af. The founder and his daughter got hundreds of Jews out of nazi Germany. google 'Leica Freedom Train'
Indeed.
Yes!
You know, maybe it's blessing in disguise that my dad never got to work at NASA after all, although he would have loved to have applied his degree in math and physics there.
My lifelong enthusiasm for the space program has been hit by this hard. Von Braun and his people were crazy good engineers. But…he was SS for crying out loud.
💯Lincoln would have held them accountable, Johnson was a slave owner from TN. Booth's greatest revenge against the Union may be our current situation.
It appears no lessons were learned. J6 is hard 2ignore.Not only the pardons bt also the fact ppl were allowed 2go 🏡 tht day.Now no one🛑ths admin it seems. American laws hve gaping holes in the Exec Branch &no enforcmnt whn Congress cedes its Art 1 pwrs.Need 2close loopholes in the Constitution ⚖️🤨
Same go for nazis. Instead, we imported them to go to the moon and suppress unions. Almost like the problem is the money people
Yes, for example, by ejecting the Confederate states from the Union after arresting and jailing the leaders of the insurrection then stripping them of their citizenship upon release.
The leaders who led or created the Confederacy … Traitors!
This is correct.
💥👍🏽🔥
Have to remember that you can not, and I mean, can not let them off easy for the “good of the country”, that is some tired old bullshit! If we can, we have to make them pay and pay dearly, and tax the wealthy for sure!
Many of us wouldn't be here in that case.
We should have prosecuted their military and deported their families back home. Instead, we let the fester and boil, and now we must defeat them again.
Lincoln paid the ultimate price for that mistake.
Too nice, too compassionate Like Jesus would have wanted
And sending them to mental institutions to get their racism and hate out of their hearts and minds.
That doesn't work.
Not pardoning Nixon, not letting Reagan have a fall guy…
YES!
This is why I am so committed to the rule of law. Mercy, yes, but after justice.
So long as they exist they will ferment trouble, undermine democracy and promote conspiracy. They have proved themselves traitors, treat them that way.
Rule of law is not just an ethical thing, though we should want it for that alone. Without it, people won't invest in America, or even want to deal with us, or if they do they will have to get a much higher return to account for the risk, which means America loses.
"No justice, no peace."
Mercy when their contrite.
*they’re 🫣
Problem is how can you tell if they’re really telling the truth when they say they’re sorry? Even the smallest child will pretend they didn’t mean it if it will get them out of time out.
I recognize sincerity and bullshit.
And at least those are little humans still learning. What’s the adults excuse?
That ship has sailed, HCR. No law, no justice. What are the non-MAGA states going to do?
I’m glad you commented. As soon as I saw Jess’s post, I thought of you and thought this is exactly what you’ve been telling us. Thank you for educating so many of us. You are amazing!
I wish more saw it this way.
ICE is the new Confederate Army
But they bahaves like Red army of thugs more and more
Not sure mercy was in order for Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis. They were directly responsible for over 600,000 deaths.
That would be the justice part.
No justice, no peace
And Alexander Stephens.
LOTS more.
Jan 6 organizers, too. Same issue, why we're here today. Impunity means they come back, and worse.
Confederate soldiers didn't have a choice, but J6 is another story.
The one named Robert E. Lee had a choice. He should have been hanged.
If only there was some mechanism by which we could learn from history ...
Apparently there is a mechanism - it’s called repetition.
And Lee & others had taken an oath to "..protect and defend the Constitution" etc etc - he, Davis, and all of the upper echelon of Southern Aristocracy who fomented and participated in the Rebellion should have been hanged (as they all feared they would be at the end of the war). But here we are...
Lincoln was too busy signing off on the mass hanging of Native Americans.
Not quite. Lincoln was too busy being dead from a GSW given to him by a Southern sympathizer and his VP, Andrew Johnson, was too busy gutting whatever restrictions on the South might have at least slowed down the rise of the Lost Cause. But do go on with your narrative.
Read and learn, son. share.google/sTDkV8Kqax2A...
You would be surprised at how many people think that this is the "extremist" view. Should have been all commissioned officers, at the very least IMO.
So few truer words. Thank you.
No one explains this concept quite like you. I’ve recommended “How the South Won the Civil War” to just about everyone I know who wants a foundational understanding of how the slaveholding mentality links right up to today.
Justice would have involved executing a lot of very important people tbh
preaching to the choir here ofc
So I think the bigger question - especially for a historian - might well be why most of the leaders who claimed to be "for the democratic republic" were not committed to justice And instead were committed to doing things like giving the Confederate slaveholders reparations @wajali.bsky.social
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaFn... I don't think the greed & racism of which you both speak in the current regime started this morning - but there are people who will fight you to the death over whether reparations are due the descendants of those who built the country *for free*
This. All day. Nazis were punished. Japanese were punished. South African apartheid leaders were punished. Confederates and enslavers received reparations for “property lost” and the Klan was born. Today those racist descendants are members of the Republican Party and are also known as MAGA.
Abraham Lincoln's most glaring mistake was allowing these rogue States back in the Union. The South has been nothing but a boil on the ass of this Republic ever since.
And maybe just prosecuting other crimes as we went along instead of letting them pile up! bsky.app/profile/stev...
Or trying & imprisoning Nixon.
It certainly would have made the j6 crew think twice.
Guess we never learn
For fucking real. My vote would have been to load them all ALL up into musty, dusty, old slave ships and send them off to the middle of the black sea! adifuckingos! ⛵
Every officer that swore an oath to the United States and joined the rebellion, from Robert E. Lee on down, should have been tried for treason and hung. The failure to do so has clear consequences to this day.
I think about this often. Being held accountable is necessary especially when so many have suffered.
Thank you!!! I've been saying that for decades.
Also Nixon, GWB, and Trump 1.0. ...our tolerance of their intolerance and criminality has led us here.
Yes, with a purge of the Klan from our shores. Also, pro-Nazis after WWII. Big mistakes.
Backfired on Dems again. Didn’t punish confederates and didn’t punish the GOPs insurrection and here we are
‼️‼️
And the Nazis that America took in
All of this. I’ve always said that if we hadn’t botched Reconstruction and let the south tell all those lies about the Civil War, we wouldn’t be here today. The way they lie about January 6th reminds me so much of Redemption and all that nonsense narrative to make the south look good. I love the
South. There are many positives but the revisionist history and the human rights abuses are not among them.
Even if someone wanted to punish the J6 plotters instead of just the minions. Imagine what a chilling effect that might have had. Psaki said Biden wanted to "cool the temperature." Hmm. The only major coup attempt in history to go unpunished. SK, Brazil, France, Scotland, Argentina are smarter.
They were. Farms burned. Carpet baggers took businesses and land. Even my dad's family farm sharecropped with Black family. The South is still angry.
We are STILL angry at the South!
I know but punishing us will not help you. Our "generational wealth" is gone and southern prez LBJ and W worked for civil rights. I protested for them for a decade. We were trying to atone for slavery - until 🤡and MAGA took over. You can't blame us for that Yankee jerk. Y'all made him.
Too little, and it wasn’t given to slavery victims. And the fact it got seen as “too harsh” by turncoat politicians upheld that lie, and the bullshit “it wasn’t about slavery” narrative.
In Texas schoolbook they're taught it was states rights. Same thing cited by the Michigan judge who dismissed charges against ppl who mutilated little girls with FGM. www.freep.com/story/news/l...
And they *know* that’s bullcrap!
Not enough. They seceded from the union and committed human atrocities. The leaders should have been hanged publicly and the slave owners should have had to pay reparations to their slaves. Including parcels of land and livestock. They had lived on the backs of their captives for decades.
I agree with punishing slave holders. Instead of carpetbaggers the freed should've gotten their estates.
Absolutely. The land should have been given to the people who worked it and the livestock too. Slaveowners should have been left destitute and forced to work for a living. Something they never had to do.
Believe me, my great great great grandfather did, but I know what you mean.
Or just letting the south secede so they wouldn't be a part of this country anymore.
And abandon the victims of their oppression to endure more oppression? That’s the same vibe as saying we should abandon the tens of millions of people currently under GOP control in gerrymandered, voter-suppressed, systematically disenfranchised states to suffer under their policies. Union forever
That's a pretty harsh judgement, and I don't agree. People move all the time. The ones that agreed with the south could go there, and the ones that didn't could move north. People move all the time. There could have been asylum set up for those fleeing. I don't think it's the same thing at all.
We hold these truths to be self evident: that all are created equal & endowed by their creator to certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness The promise, however imperfect, upon which we rebelled. Inalienable. Suffer Not the Slaver to Live. Union Forever!
What does that have to do with allowing a section of the counter to leave because they wanted to? Imagine if that had happened, we would never have had a civil war, brother against brother, etc. In the secession agreement could have been a guarantee that those who wanted to leave could leave.
It's not such a crazy idea. If the US was smaller, we would be a healthier country, and whatever country the southern states created would be whatever they made. And why are you so upset about this? It was the Civil War, and we are talking about hypothetical scenarios. Calm down.
And: Inalienable. Not negotiable. Not politically expedient. Not debatable. Inalienable. Self-evident, inalienable rights. You propose compromise with those who seek to alienate the inalienable. Either I believe in my values or I do not. Today, yesterday, or 160 years ago or hence. Inalienable.
Not compromise, not letting them be a part of this country, this vision of a good future for all citizens. They would have failed as a country in their own and we would have been able to root out and curtail wheat was happening instead of letting it slide. You are right, it was a huge mistake
To not punish them severely and drive them out of the country (hence letting them take a section and fuck off while we protected those who wanted to leave).
You cannot be peaceful neighbors with slavers. We tried this. We allowed the Jim Crow south to endure. We did not hang the traitors and their officers. We condemned Black people in America to a century of life under fascism and now it’s come for everyone else.
& where is the funding going to come from for those who cant afford to move? Is a program going to be set up to help them find homes, switch government services they were receiving etc? What about pets that were allowed in one state but not another? (Capybaras are allowed in my state for example.)
Yikes, I was talking about after the Civil War. FFS.
All of the same questions apply. It would have taken resources to move, and countless little issues to sort out. I apologize if I seem severe, but I believe Lincoln & Douglass were right at the time. Allowing them to leave the Union would have killed the Union and condemned the disadvantaged.
And thank you for the apology. It's a heated time and I think those of us that are seeing and feeling the severe injustices are at our breaking points. It's so important that we support one another now, more than ever.
Maybe, or maybe not. We will never know. In this modern world the southern states have done nothing but drag the rest of the states down, suck on the teet of the blue states, and breed hate, racism, bigotry, etc, and they are the largest perpetrators of "legal" slavery through
the privatized prison system. I'm not saying every person in a red state is a bad person, but crappy ones tend to be concentrated there. Although there are a bunch of ignorant bigots in the red county I live in, in a blue states. I'm just sick of the evil that is being fed and encouraged and I'm
Tired of keeping my mouth shut about it. I don't know how to fix the problem with this hatred and division but something has got to change, and arguing with each other over hypothetical here isn't it.
Just look up. The wealthy have, from before our nation even existed—way back at Bacon’s Rebellion in the 1600’s—used their wealth to sew division and hate among the rest of us. Had we tried the traitors and officers for treason back then, and hanged those convicted, we could have avoided a lot.
Bahaha
Or by punishing Trump et al, for January 6th.
I think about this almost every day.
Say this all the time. My family went AWOL so we'd of been in jail and safe haha. We really did fuck up not stomping out the smoldering shit. I dont think anything but giving them back the south will fix this. Then that brings all kinds of other problems. Viva revolutioń haha.
Seriously
Lincoln had ambitious plans for rehabilitating the South and Southerners, and he persuaded a majority in Congress that it could work and should be tried. Those plans died with him. Andrew Johnson became POTUS, and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
At this point I wish we had let the confederate states go.
And by voting for the smart, brown lady.
In my book there’s three huge missed opportunities for accountability: -Reconstruction -Denazification (which was a failure because of…) -Operation Paperclip If we don’t punish these fascists, we’ll be here again in 100 years or so.
If we survive to the other side of all this, it's a mistake we won't make again.
The only wall we need is the one that nazis are gonna be lined up on.
Sorry, but YES, we will. 🤷♀️
I’ve always believed that we should have let Sherman finish the job.
In the same way that not a single Confederate general or senator was arrested or charged with literal treason, nothing will happen to a single MAGA politician, or any of their brown shirt good squad. Many of them won't even lose their jobs.
Agreed. None of the higher ups should have been able to regain any political power. Many should have been jailed. And the Feds should have given 40 acres and a mule to every freed slave family.
Or by REALLY taking over and not treating them as trusted countrymen.
Indeed. Also in retrospect we may have called the Cold War a tad early. Seems the other sides kept fighting and somehow we’re now on the verge of losing both.
I used to know a guy who lived in France online. He told me that he regretted the way the French Revolution was handled. I'm not so sure about that. The French beheaded their problem. We seem to keep giving tyrants that mess with us a free pass. They're doing a lot better than we are right now.
Amen.
Lincoln should have taken off Sherman leash a lot earlier.
My 1st mission when we get the machine working...
They weren't beat down enough.
AND CONVICTING THE BANKERS WHO COMMITTED SUCH HEINOUS CRIMES AGAINST THE UNITED STATES IN THE 2008 FINANCIAL FAILURE... thecon.tv
Maybe deporting them..... 🤔
Well, Gen. Sherman did have a strategy…
<—- I wrote a book about that!
They should have been deported. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.
In a way I wish Andrew Jackson had been president for the civil war. Was he a monster in so many ways? Yes. Would that monster have hanged all successionists? Also yes. Did he have a red lined black cape and Dracula hair? Also yes.
Following
For real!!! F*cking Andrew Johnson... giving us 200 more years of this crap. Kinda reminds me of tRump pardoning the J-6ers.
We know why that didnt happen. The " look over there " strategies of the people at the top. Nothings changed.
Yes!!
instead they got statues and a compromise on the value of black peoples' vote
Yes.
One of the biggest mistakes we made as a country was not hanging every single one of those traitorous fucks. Because guess what... their lineage now wears red hats and hates the rest of the country also.
My kid says this all the time.
Actually we should've just let them stay a separate country. Hopefully then the KKK would've stayed confined to the South.
The klan was a reaction to losing the war and conditions of Reconstruction. If they'd won there would be no need for the klan.
Amen! Then, I wouldn't be living in a sea of rebel flags on pickups driven by a pathetically educated populace (maybe)
That was the plan so they shot Lincoln and went back to slavery by calling it Jim Crow.
The confederates were punished, and continue to punish themselves.
Maybe a bad idea for the GOP to have someone from TN be Lincoln’s VEEP for his second term? And then all that nefariousness to get Hayes in office. Reconstruction was doomed.
But, in fact, the yankees were not much better.
I hate to say it was complicated but it is very complicated when you are killing your cousins.....the things that went into that decision making were astounding and even Lincoln told Grant to "let 'em up easy."
Could have saved more grief by deporting Trumps father.
maybe we need reminding of the conditions & death rates of confederate prisons like Andersonville (Camp Sumter)!!
Historical blunder.
This! Biggest lesson I learned from @hcrichardson.bsky.social! If it hadn’t been for our hero Heather, I honestly don’t think I’d be here right now. I still find myself in a puddle of tears most every day. My tears are different now, they are full of grit, titanium, and an unstoppable LOVE!
They created so much hate in including the KKK and look at that hate today
Reconstruction, unfortunately, was not allowed to complete its necessary work to root out the secessionists and their bigotry!
🤣🤣🤣 Ya Think and the Jan 6ers But instead y'all Erected statues for them and named buildings and ships after them WHY RACISM There's a saying "Satan will find that ONE thing to Destroy you he found it ( RACISM ) in the US @reeciecolbert.bsky.social #Blacksky #BTG
And if this statement wasn't True then you wouldn't have had Jim Crow after the fact
Exactly. If you don't believe Jess, read, "How the South Won the Civil War" by Heather Cox Richardson
Thank you!!!
They should have all met their demise
And Nixon
If I had a time machine and could go talk with President Lincoln, I would show him the future and tell him to just let the South go! The Civil War truly never ended and we should have parted ways it's just wasn't worth it.
And the Soviet Union falls, Europe is overwhelmed and Germany wins WWII. No USAAF or Manhattan Project. No D Day Invasion. Historical revisionist history is an interesting thought experiment.
It was worth every drop of blood.
We could have saved a lot of time and grief by punishing the insurrection, but here we are.
Odd how looking forward, not backward always tends to cause that sort of problem.
Just a few well-chosen hangings. Live by the mob, die by the mob.
and Nixon.
One of my favorite StL points abt the Civil War. It was the immigrant German population who stopped Confederates from seizing the Arsenal. Immigration FTW!
Or let the red states leave.
Reconstruction effort ended with the 1877 Hayes compromise. Southern Dems let Republicans take presidency in exchange for removing federal troops protecting new freedman in the South. Troops were wanted out West to clear native tribes from the plains for “ Manifest Destiny.” What a country !
It’s as if being anti-slavery gave northerners some feeling of moral high ground while not quite comfortable with the idea that all humans are born equal.
There's still time. We can do it now. When we correct the error in '26, Democrats in Congress can revive all the safety net programs, but only the blue states are going to be ready to receive funding, so only blue states are going to get funding until red states rebuild their safety nets.
They took out Lincoln because Johnson was a southerner and knew they would get their shite back. Now they are coming after our shite.
What if all the gold and treasure of the world was spent on preserving our planet, providing for its inhabitants and promoting live and kindness
Instead of war and greed
....and not pardoning Nixon 😒
I like to think had Lincoln lived it might have been different.
Yes!
That is exactly my conclusion! The South was never punished for the Civil War. We need a do-over!
You misspelled "executing".
We clearly didn't hang enough confederates after the Civil War.
Would it have been so bad to let the south secede? 600k lives saved. Slaves flee to the north - breaks the slavery free labor economy.
The only good Confederacy is a DEAD one.
Or the insurrectionists Jan 7th...
Isn’t that the truth. Something about “malice toward none…” Guess when you forgive a-holes, they come back to bite you in the ass.
We could have learned something from Germany about denazification, too.
Exactly. There should have been harsh punishment and forfeiture of all assets.
Or maybe insisting that they NOT rejoin
Slavers gonna slave...
This. All the death, destruction and social upheaval on all sides that finally led to the USA promised in the Declaration 89 years later. Thrown away by the Compromise of 1877. The fight must be fought and won again, that America can yet declare (to paraphrase) All persons are created equal.
Grant and Lincoln were forgiving characters but maybe there were too many rotten characters in the Confederacy to hang them all.
Yep. No mercy at that time would have changed the US for the better. We have to find the courage to punish this regime and its enablers now and institute laws that prevent this in the future. There is decades of work to do. It is required or we have not country.
Prefer we had set them free in 1861, there is no fixing them, they are the takers, they remain the traitors.
If only the drunk tailor from Greeneville had not become president.
Indeed. We've actually had few times that could've saved us from this grief but no one seemed to have the stomach or integrity to do the things required.
Because white people benefit from inequality.
*rich* white people. Being poor pretty much screws you too
Except that turning a blind eye to inequality ensures that poor whites always have an advantage, based on their skin color.
And the Nazis
Goes back further. Just opinion, not a historian, I realize it is more complex, but I believe the Puritans never left, they just moved. Why did England want to get rid of them? We were always taught they came here for religious freedom. They were FANATICS! 300 yrs later, dealing with repercussions.
England was right
The Confederate flag needs some burning.
😉💙💙💙
One-way ticket on boat to Africa.
It doesn't pay to leave an opponent in long-term economic hardship once defeated in war. It creates generational trauma that can span decades, if not centuries. Look at how Germany's post-WWI reparations fractured their economy and led to the rise of Nazism. Reconciliation & restoration pays off.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately
And ban their traitorous flag. This is the only Confederate flag I acknowledge:
100%
It’s truly the root of all of this happening now.
There's still time.
Being a Confederate is its own punishment.
They are still amoung us.
We need another reconstruction, it clearly failed last time. I keep thinking that we could reconstruct society to work for the people. Like FDR did, only everyone benefits this time. What would that look like to you?
Universal Healthcare and free public education
Universal healthcare & education, people earning $1M+/year pay more in taxes, lower taxes for people/households earning <$200k/year, fossil fuel industry pays for climate action & renewable energy transition, fast track citizenship, AI regulation & ethics, & national high-speed rail are a good start
It’s no coincidence that the first major erosion in the New Deal was racists pointing to how the GI Bill benefited Black people (even as those same racists worked day and night to minimize pay outs in their states / areas of influence)
Absolutely! Former confederates should never have been allowed to be seated in Congress and reconstruction was ended way too early!
I’ve said for many years, our current dilemma with MAGA, White Supremacy, etc. can all be traced back to John Wilkes Booth.
Jess, I have yelled that the snake’s head should have been crushed for the past twenty years (once I got over the propaganda of Gone With The Wind). The words “war of Northern Aggression” should never once have been allowed to appear.
The 1865 ones or the 2020 ones?
We enacted the Posse Comitatus Act to protect the former confederate states from federal troops implementing domestic policies. Look where this law is today. #Trumpocalypse
indulging white supremacy instead of fighting it. 😢
Amen ! Thank you for this comment. That this country rewarded slave owners and has repealed every civil rights legislation that was won with blood is a testimony to the bigotry and cruelty that prevails. Punishing the confederates would have prevented a Trump presidency.
Absolutely!!!
Question is, will we do it this time, IF we get the opportunity?!!
I am a U.S. historian and tell people this every single day.
I often wonder how things would be different if Lincoln had lived
💯
