If you aren’t uncomfortable learning our country’s history, you are learning propaganda.
If you aren’t uncomfortable learning our country’s history, you are learning propaganda.
Much like Germany teaches about how strong and far reaching Germany was in the 1940’s. Ooh sorry, they took down Nazi statues and put them in museums and teach about the holocaust. Or as Trump would say, Germany is woke. Wake the fuck up people.
I took my first undergraduate class in History in 1972... Not a fancy school - a Pensylvania State school...Hey, I got in... I will never forget the first day of class - the professor said "You are now going to learn about real history; and you may not have been exposed to this before"...
Brought to us by the people who think we are grooming kids in schools. Changing what is taught about our history is GROOMING!
Or you have a general lack of empathy due to a missing soul.
Yep
....and/or you are a white supremacists racist.
Double negative there.
If you can't accept looking at the miseries, it's because it mirrors your soul.

I got propaganda in my history books when I attended history class in high school
Or occasionally crying or feeling stunned at some new horror you learn about.
By learning and seeing how life WAS, we then focus on our world today. We celebrate the road we travel and forge a road ahead. Through history we see possibility. Trump is an uneducated shit head.
The history of US slavery, territorial conquest, and constant mistreatment of immigrants and laborers is nothing less than a horror show. Just a casual list of massacres: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
I’ll have you know that the great nation of Freedonia has never done anything wrong.
Yes....like "Manifest Destiny" and "Columbus discovered America"
I’m not uncomfortable learning about my country’s history. I’m uncomfortable by those who don’t learn from it. My face might have been the face of oppression in the past but I’m proud to call myself an alley to anyone be suppressed or oppressed by the current government.
Strength usually comes from a bit of discomfort 💙

True of any country. And any group of people. There are some very good people, some very bad people and most are in between.
Sadly we have some family waking up but it may be too late for them to avoid the pain that caused them to question and they are now feeling it.

Could it trigger a child to think about a family history of a pimp as a grandfather and a father in the klan?
What gives me the greatest pride in my country is in its willingness to address its mistakes, like slavery, Jim Crow, and women's suffrage, among others. It takes a deeply insecure person to defend their country's wrongdoings.
Or you agree with it and love the hate.
They are just adding more things for future generations to feel shame about. Trump's Regime wants to placate themselves now, but one day they WILL be the museum display that people shake their heads at and kids write essays about.
Trump is the type of guy who cannot admit he has ever done anything wrong, so this all tracks. If you've never done anything wrong, then you cannot learn from your mistakes. Might explain partly why he is such a dumba$s.

The genocide of the Indigenous Peoples of Am. killed more Native Americans than the Nazis killed jews & non-jews in the concentration camps in Germany.
DT & regime want to whitewash & erase our country’s history. What is happening right now with immigration & DC is just the beginning. If you think it can’t happen here again, you are not paying attention. People of color, immigrants, women, LGBTQ, they are coming for us all. They fear our power.
Torture & cruelty takes many forms. The concentration camps were evil. But what was done to slaves was just as cruel, torturous, & evil. Native Americans were able to fight back, but their peoples were almost wiped out. What happened to them was a genocide.
The estimated # of Africans kidnapped & taken to Am. is between 10-12 million. There are no solid statistics on how many slaves were murdered, but based on the #’s of African people kidnapped & their descendants, it was more than likely more than in Germany.
Factual history serves many purposes. The most important is that we can learn from the mistakes and transgressions of others. It’s not our job to feel guilty for what they did. That’s a waste of time. It’s our job to right the wrongs and change laws and processes to prevent their reoccurrence.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to be well versed in history. All kinds of it. You see patterns and cycles that form every few years. And you know what to expect. You also know when to duck...
My family is proud of leaving Virginia for Ohio because they abhorred slavery. But the story is also about white privilege, because they COULD leave. The slaves couldn't. If we don't see both parts, we don't see the whole. Also proud of those who fought for the Union, not the Confederacy
you repeat history again
Absolutely correct!
So true
Apparently there are no Priestess emojis so I had to go with the nerd. So be it. 🤣

Yup.
That and you’re a snowflake…
Everything they do is a racist dogwhistle, everything. Poor=brown, and if you sympathise, you are considered brown. This is racism come back, same as jim crows, same reason we have so many prisons, because it is on purpose, always was, to this very day.
Or a sociopath.
Taught school for 31 years, kids understand that what their ancestors did doesn't make them bad people. They know it comes down to the "content of their character" & frankly, young people are far less phobic & racist than their elders - they're also better at spotting propaganda.
I am not my parents, and I am certainly not my grandparents, so I feel no shame for anything they did. It is important to learn about the things they did wrong so we don't repeat those wrongs, otherwise we keep living in a loop with no progress. We are born here and now, and this makes us family.
As someone who has a minor in US history (end of WWII-1970s) I agree 100%. We have to have an understanding of our country's history . . . good and bad.
It's a weak, weak mind that refuses to learn from the mistakes of the past.
When future generations look back at this time, it ain’t gunna be comfortable.
No truer words have been written
In flori-DUH…yesterday, our son came home and told us how he learned about god in geometry. He is in a public school. He is learning about the good, the bad and the ugly through us. This HS better back the f**k off with religion. I will not tolerate it. Can’t learn about slavery but god is fine?
I am not uncomfortable with our country's history because I know the truth. I know how bad our history is, I know how our forefathers treated people. I don't like that fact, but it happened, and I can't change history. All I can do is make sure it never happens again.
And those "blessings of liberty" were hard-won at great cost: not only should the wrongs and the cost to right them be remembered, but the fact that we HAD THE COURAGE to SEE what we were doing was WRONG and FIX IT, as well, to encourage future generations to do the same. It's in the Preamble.
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. Everything in life always needs repair, just like cars, houses, appliances, etc... It seems every 20+ years our country is in need of repair. We need to repair our country, again.
It's a never-ending task, but one that's WORTH the work! Our Constitution was written to LIMIT the power of government and make it accountable to WE, THE PEOPLE; and while the Preamble reflects our stated values, our Constitution puts them into action. We've a task to pass liberty on: NO KINGS!
Thank you!!!!!!
I don’t care. I know all the bad things. So? Do we live backwards? No? Ok then.
I cannot imagine how this period will be framed 🤦🏽♀️ #RHOM

This. Our country's history is extremely jaded and full of unspeakable horrors and tragedy.
ESPECIALLY THE HISTORY TRUMP IS WRITING RIGHT NOW. I've long been ashamed of Native American genocide, black slavery, bombing Hiroshima/Nagasaki, imprisoning Japanese during WWII. But now we've elected a convicted rapist who killed people during Covid and continues to kill people here and worldwide.
and he is a lifelong and documented racist…

Their rampant racism forbids them to listen to any history but what their cult leader tells them...
Exactly
Ironically, however depressing or horrifying the museum exhibits, it's a cakewalk relative to the reality of slavery.
Our nation’s history should make all of us uncomfortable. Read the life stories of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth. The abject, dehumanizing cruelty they& thousands less-well-known experienced at the hand of enslavers is deplorably sickening. Learn from history;say “never again.”
Not necessarily, I was always able to understand both the fact that the people who used to live in my country did some horrible stuff, and that I am not responsible for that and shouldn't feel bad about it

If history doesn't feel uncomfortable, no progress has been made.
It is only in learning the truth, living with the discomfort, and being willing to change that a civilisation progresses to a better world for EVERYONE! When you know better, you do better
If we allow this white washing we r not learning history at all
When I was in school I could not believe the historical man's inhumanity to man... Why in the world would these people do the things they did in the name of religion when religion is supposed to be good and charitable and kind not evil and deadly...
I was curious if Steve Harvey said this so I Googled it: "Cannot be attributed to a single, well-known source." But whoever said this, I couldn't agree more. 💔
This was just a gif to express my frustration. Not meant to attribute any statement to Steve Harvey
💙 I hear you. Seeing Steve Harvey I naturally assumed.
Could the argument for this being a great country be that we are a more perfect place now than we were because of progress we made from the places we were at in the past and that by understanding how we got here from there shows us how to get from here to somewhere else?
Lets just be honest with each other.

I'm uncomfortable seeing your countrys history being made....
And the same in the UK. Yes, there are things to be proud of, but there are also others to be profoundly shamed by. We are all the result of that history and we should grasp it all and learn from it.
Solid point!
💯
You're exactly right. When this is over, we need to take a very, very, hard look in the mirror and decide if we stand for truth and justice for all, or continue with the same white washing bullshit we've been doing for 250 years. The American Experiment isn't dead, but it's severely wounded.
But no school history books talk about the real history of this country, isn’t it? Did they teach about the natives genocide or the slavery trade or the slavery practice of family separation for one? Or the voyage from Africa? This is a Pandora’s box that I don’t know if you want to open it.
Mainly it's just that the chairs in school were terrible

Our country’s history is genocide and slavery.
That goes for most countries. The truth is hard but needed.
World 🌎 history is there for us to learn from. Not ignore!

and if you ARE uncomfortable deal with it - our truth DOES hurt A LOT we have been horrific - and we cannot heal it if we are too cowardly to even LOOK AT IT I'm closer and closer to done with this country of violent hate filled cowards
So, if you are comfortable learning our history, you are rejecting propaganda. Is that the same? The double-negative has me confused. 🤷♂️
Took my family to the Canadian Museum of History yesterday (national museums are free for children this summer), and spent time in the special exhibits highlighting the mistreatment of indigenous, black, asian, LGBTQ+ and disabled voices. Nothing is being hidden up here. We can always do better.
And they accuse woke libtards radical leftists of indoctrination.
because they have ZERO understanding of the words they use.
Some because they were denied actual education, some because they want to keep denying the "lessers" the benefits of an actual education.
If a government controls or suppresses knowledge, lies eventually replace reality. What’s left is propaganda. People live in distortions and recycled slogans instead of reality. That warps culture itself.
Solo true
Our history is just part of the history of human "civilization" and our species is messy.

You don't need to internalize the mistakes of others in order to learn from them. I think if learning the truth makes you uncomfortable, you have a misaligned perspective. I think people who try to make others feel guilty or ashamed of history are just as bad as the people trying to hide from it.
Almost embarrassed to admit it, but I just discovered The People's History of the United States. I'm not even thru the first chapter & I'm already pissed off.
An excellent book! It made me want to take a history class with Howard Zinn. He was still with us when I read it. No shame in discovering something, no matter when.
You already know this but it gets worse. But I suspect you will feel a resolution of purpose when you are done. The good news is that you can't think uncritically about U.S. exceptionalism the same way after.
You should not be embarrassed for seeking the truth! Spread the word by buying another copy from a local independent bookseller and leave it at your local independent cafe with the inscription: "Read and pass on." Another must-have: Timothy Snyder's ON TYRANNY. #RESIST
I did the audio book version of "On Tyranny." I like your idea of buying a copy to pass along though.

And they call the liberals “snowflakes” when facts of the enslavement of people, and trade in people as property, must be removed from the Smithsonian because those facts and that disgraceful history make the right-wing “uncomfortable”. That’s pathetic and weak.
Could it trigger a child to think about a family history of a pimp as a grandfather and a father in the klan?
😍 Exactly right
Yes. The history of USA should make everyone uncomfortable. There are no clean hands in history.
Including current events.
Yes
Alas, that's true for almost every country you could name. Maybe Bhutan or Andorra would get a pass...
Tell it to the Nazi cunts in 47's administration.
Take it to another level. Just because your ancestors were not around when some of our systemic injustices were created, does not mean that you have not in some way benefitted or suffered from them.
History is only fully valuable as a subject of study if it's teaching you how we f0cked up in the past, in order to inform you how to keep from f0cking up in the present and future.
Exactly👍

The problem is with to many people who eat the propaganda like it was their last meal.
Also, there is something so lazy about insisting that America has been perfect from the beginning. It minimizes the progress we have made and completely erases the work yet to be done. Unambitious and boring.
Like watching Fox, they just think whitewashing history is OPTIMISM. They just want their kids to grow up loving America. Why focus on the negative? Good things happened, too. And what happens when you focus on the negative? America fails. Like with Jan 6, their patriotism is a tool for the rich.
Yep
Unfortunately for our state, READING is uncomfortable for the majority of the knuckle-dragging stump-jumpers around us.
Indeed! A thoughtful, grounded, confident American can face our history.
None of us are comfortable learning about the horrible things that were done to Americans by Americans. Trust me most Black Americans don’t like talking about Slavery or the enslavement of our ancestors but it’s treasonous to deny what happened, same with Native American
Not much change, taking from people with darker skin tones.
Only a sober, clear-eyed look into the past will help us take the next step forward as a society. All of this whitewashing of history is an attempt at regression.
That's why we must have ALL the ACCURATE HISTORY. RESTORE THE SMITHSONIAN, ALL MUSEAUMS & LIBRARIES!
You are correct
My take on all of this is it’s time to go back to preschool and kindergarten when the fundamental principle taught by rational adults “do unto others as you would have done unto you” makes more sense than the history we’ve been given to discern in our educational system.
Being English, I can't comment on the US education system and I'm an atheist but this quote from Scripture is one of many we would do well to remember; kindness, fairness and respect. This administration spouts religion, while breaking every tenet of The Bible. What does that tell you?
It tells me that since time antiquity rulers like King James who clearly supported dumb ideas like hating homosexuality when he himself had those tendencies have demolished Gods ideas in the Bible itself. Tell me God really supported rape and the purchasing of a daughter?
Well, as an atheist I say there is no God; religion is the root of all evil as far as I'm concerned - look at Iran, Afghanistan, Israel. But context is important, too. Centuries past things were different but good vs evil was apparent. Trump has no moral compass; his team for wealth and power.
I’ve always said people are evil. Not religion. If you support a religion or a church that supports behavior that causes pain in others you the human are evil. Congregate elsewhere with people who have pure good intentions.
OK fair point. But what if religion is forced upon you? That you have no choice? There are many instances in the Middle-East where religions are in the hands of evil. For context, look at Netanyahu, look at Ali Khamenei, look at The Taliban. These religions of hate and suppression.
Again it is the evil people forcing a fake dogma under pretenses of religion. We disagree on nothing. 🙂
Trump is evil. He has subverted Christianity with his friends.
This Bible needs redacting until further notice. It became a teaching tool for his children to decipher lies from truth instead of teaching manual.
And hence we have history and science that has copycatted the same notions. Everything is upside down throughout the world.
This basically sums up the inspiration for my history-based comedy music special The American Songbook: Redacted! This line shoulda been in my press kit!! youtu.be/aYJd-r3awzo
Sadly not necessarily - far too many people are far too comfortable with - even proud of - the worst aspects. This applies to my country as much as yours.
I never felt uncomfortable learning our history, I felt it was necessary.
The history of rich people buying congress and senate votes to make indelible their abhorrent business practices like slavery, should make you hate the system we live in, and if it doesn't then I think you're incapable of complex ideation for self-preservation.
Our history is horrific, it's tough to hear but necessary to know where you came from so you don't end up there again ... yet here we are ugh
Spoken like a true educator.
Why do antisemites say 6m wasnt the number? It makes them uncomfortable stating truth. Why do racists hate talking about slavery unless they are "the good guys"? They feel personally attacked by history. If a narrative personally offends someone, they write their own.
As a Brit we know our history is less than comfortable. Many countries celebrate yearly the day they booted us out of their country. You can’t change what your ancestors did but you can grow from learning and accepting what happened and why. Greed and power was the reason then and the reason now.
Truth!!
Okay just to be VERY clear - slavery was a terrible stain on the US. There is NO upside or positive in slavery. We cannot allow any administration or anyone to paint the scourge of slavery as anything but the abomination that it was.
Propaganda must facilitate the displacement of aggression by specifying the targets for hatred. Joseph Goebbels
I read Howard Zinn‘s “A People’s History of the United States” when I was 16. I was privileged to have some very good teachers.
Bingo, and we don't know how far we've come without historical reference points.
It’s objectively stupid. Every country has a complex history. Period. It should make you uncomfortable and seek to do better in the future. That’s just how it works.
What's the difference between America and other dictatorial countries? When folks wanted rid of their dictators, they attacked the main residence of the dictator. Maybe something is missing in America?
Yes, but the concept of propaganda needs to be taught first.
History is not there to make you feel better: it is there to educate you. If parts of it makes you uncomfortable, that's good, because that means you'll more likely take an ACTIVE role in preventing your nation from making that mistake again. Rewriting history is what dictatorships do.
The constitution was written by white supremacist slave owners and satanic freemasons. Religion always comes before politics
Montgomery Alabama is out of the way, but the National Memorial for Peace and Justice should be a required visit for anyone from the South. Hit up the Moton Field while in the area, where the Tuskegee Airmen got started.
History shouldn’t be about making people feel good or bad. It’s learning facts about our past. If our ancestors did bad things, then we need to learn about it, so we can be better moving forward.

I went to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. The first display I saw was a slave boat with slaves manning the oars and whips cracking. That’s when I started crying. I cried through the entire museum. We MUST preserve the history of this country, good or bad.
4th grade history is where 4th grade minds stopped. Minds that progressed got more information and are less likely to go along with repeating the unsavory parts. They also understand it was 4th grade awareness levels that perpetrated those parts.
