Rural women in Missouri must travel to get their care. Women living in maternity deserts — over 40% of the counties in Missouri — have to travel 3.6 times farther than women living in areas with full access to maternity care. thebeaconnews.org/stories/2025...

At a time when advanced care is readily available in general, they're going with god care which is just plain negligent.

I was lucky in that I only had to drive an hour to deliver, but I was amazed when a friend in the city said she WALKED to the hospital to deliver...she has more than one hospital within walking distance.

I'll never understand why people vote against their own self interest. These women deserve more. My daughter worked in a health clinic in Malawi this summer and their maternity care seems to be the same as rural America. How did we let this happen?

I can't imagine. My 1st time was barely 4hrs between "is that a contraction?" & holding the baby in my arms. 3rd time, I lived 10min from the hospital. By the time a friend drove from the hospital to my house to babysit, and then I drove to the hospital, I nearly had the kid in the parking lot.

An hour! And your friend WALKED!? I just read about the awful infant mortality rates about Mississippi and knew you would understand this immediately

In KS, I know a couple who had to travel an hour and a half to get to the maternity ward for delivery. This can mean a need to induce delivery, an additional cost for travel/food, more time off work, & safety for the mom/newborn. Also, issues if it's an at risk pregnacy/baby has complications.

That’s exactly correct. I understand they are gerrymandered AF, but they still elect a republican governors, Lt. governors, attorney generals, BOTH senators and the president. I blame dems for the situation as well by giving up on the rural communities.

For-profit health systems have little motivation to provide services in poor, rural areas. The misinformation about government funded healthcare is mind boggling.

Missouri women thought of this way too late, or not at all. Family values pushes women into marriage and baby making. What marriage and baby making does is place women in danger, impoverishes women and compromises their health. Republican women are not winning.

The hospital I worked in from 2005-2018 in southeast Missouri was closed by a corporate decision. Not profitable enough. Those women now drive an hour or more, or deliver in Arkansas or Tennessee.

#Arkansas is the same most travel over 80 to 100 miles to receive care. Small Rural hospitals will transport immediately. Costing more. The outcome is this!
