The US and Russia are meeting in Alaska to discuss their second betrayal of Ukraine, after both failed to honour the terms of the Budapest Memorandum. These stipulated that Ukraine would give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for guarantees of peace from Russia and the US.
Trump’s lizard brain knows he must pretend otherwise, but he would love nothing more than to see Ukraine crushed, as he blames it for causing him political trouble. He’ll help Putin, then thinks he’ll scoop up Ukrainian spoils for himself. The sickest of creatures & the world will burn for him.

I think the only thing the orange dude was playing for was for a better story to sell his support of Vlad to the American people. He may have gotten some delay in the response of the Europeans in the mix but I don't see how this changes things that much.
Trump will then put massive pressure on European states and Ukraine to accept this dead. And it is despicable--though done with enormous skill and playing on the naive hopes of Ukraine backers. This is a free piece.

In 1914 German policy was guided by the idea that the Serbian issue could be used to split the Entente. Similarly, Putin sees the chance here not only to reconquer Ukraine (and other lost territories) but also to split the US off from the European NATO members. This in addition to the 1938 analogy.
US are no longer an ally to anyone, but Europe and Ukraine are afraid to understand this. This blindness could lead to catastrophe.

Agree! In the end, #Europe needs to learn fast now to stand on it's own feet. And build up the required defense capabilities for #Ukraine at warp speed. This must become the #EU #moonshot moment now.
Europe has been repeatedly humiliated and treated like a kid because it has invested only 1% in military industry for decades. But it could have been much worse had it not been for Ukraine. Much, much worse...
But it is not just money. #Europe needs to tighten up decision making. Can not allow to be stopped by Hungary or so. 27 decision makers are too many. #Europe needs to combine forces more radically.
And Europe also needs to change its mentality. Irish PM said "why should we produce weapons that will sit unused in warehouses?". How dense he is. Even in warehouses weapons are used. They make you feared and respected, and not treated like a kid. Or worse, like a prey.
Europe needs to open a second front in the Ukraine war. Russia cannot afford to fight on two fronts. America cannot afford to stop the Europeans. Bring to a final end the mafia state of Moscow. This is the only way.
Spot on, but depressing. Could a NATO without the US be possible? Nukes aside Russia is only a middling state with a terrible economy. France and the UK have some nuclear deterance ability, surely Europe, Canada and possibly Australia can stand together. Transactional Trump would sell us weapons.

Zelensky has pretty much said he can't and is not going to give up territory. With withdrawal of aid, how much leverage does the US have anyway? The most difficult US weapon to replace is Patriot AD which Trump has already limited. I hope UA has spent the last 6 months US-proofing themselves.

Trump is assuming that Europe (inc UK) wrings their hands and abandons Ukraine in a vain hope to keep US “on side” (whatever that means in the current context) Alternatively it finally forces Europe to accept that we need to declare independence from US, with all of the short term disruption
The Least Worst case scenario would see the US in a very precarious position, both on trade and wrt foreign policy elsewhere - China, for instance…

I am not really sure who will be scared or pushed around by any US/Trump threats embedded in this Trump-Putin conspiracy. It could have worked if Scholz was still there as Bundeskanzler. Will Macron be scared? Will Nordic/Baltics be scared? Will Mertz be scared? Nope :-) Starmer? Not sure.
