(the whole point of atproto is that they can't "shut it down," & that you can host your own PDS or log in through someone else's that isn't Bluesky, though)

Yeah, but who's going to jump through all those hoops? A fraction of a fraction of a percent of the current user base? They may not technically kill it, but they'd effectively kill it. There's a reason Mastodon never took off.

It's not that I think it would be hard for me to figure out. It's that I doubt 99% if the population would bother with anything more complicated than 'Download the one app and sign in".

I *had* a Mastodon account. The problem was barely anyone else I wanted to follow wanted to jump through the minor hoops to create an account.

That’s what I’m saying - deer social is not mastodon, it’s Bluesky and uses all the same login and everything .. there’s no switchover required

it's better to call all these services that people are referring to "bluesky" as atproto (a number of apps, including bluesky and deer social, runs on that protocol) mastodon (and other masto type sites) uses a different protocol/system

I also keep seeing ppl with this opinion post their other socials on sites run by companies who are aiding the Trump admin & would absolutely share data on users talking about organizing against them.
