I'm a technical writer & we're being encouraged to use AI in our work more often. Every time I do, I feel a little reassured about my job security, because it's terrible. (I know, I know, it won't be terrible forever, my days are numbered, etc.)
It’s seemingly inevitable and also it sucks. It’s bad at writing and it does not save any time!
This particular coworker is all in on AI, uses it for everything. I find this ridiculous while acknowledging that there are SOME use cases where it MIGHT be useful.
I also find it objectionable because of how bad it is for the environment, but I feel like I'm just screaming into the void about that & nobody cares.
This is a big thing for me as well, not to mention just the general enshittification of our information ecosystem.
I just used our in-house AI to help me write something (I fed it about a dozen documents and a prompt), and I still spent time rewriting the final. It's a tool to get somewhere, not a final destination. The output was useful as an outline/starting point, but that was it
It can be valuable for this but what I have seen is that people don’t evaluate the outline it puts out to see if it makes sense/aligns with objectives. They just go with it. One of the things I worry about the most is the loss of critical thinking/evaluation of writing.
(Not speaking of you specifically, just in general.)
Oh I get what you're saying. I think people see it as a shortcut, not a single tool for writing. It can help organize information, but it is terrible at final format writing.
My coworker definitely sees it as a writing tool and it is just NOT.
I've used it to ask general questions like how do I convert X type of document into Z type of document. I haven't tried it for organization/outlines, but that's a good idea. Using it to just flat-out write for you is a terrible practice.
