When Carson started on the Tonight Show, there was nothing else on TV that late. With internet and cable, viewership has dwindled. The first sign this was coming was the cancellation of After Midnight. Now, Kimmel is talking about retiring and Fallon and Meyers are down to only 4 shows per week.
They torched Public Broadcasting, too. They want us to think the dreams of the Sixties for a better world are dead. Especially one Dream in particular, the one about little black kids and little white kids and being judged by the content of one's character.

I like Colbert a lot, but I think Letterman was the institution the same way Carson was the Tonight Show (even though he was the third host I think) Leno and Fallon torched it way more by continuing it. Just my two cents obviously.

Watching the Colbert Report as a teenager probably did an amazing thing for my sense of irony and ability to critically think. I grew drastically further left than him over time but, I have no doubt his show kept me from conforming to the ideas around me. For that, I remain grateful. o7
