Yes the fuck it is bro Would it not violate your personal liberty if you were required to attend a government institution for 12 years and we took YOUR phone away?

1. There were no phones to take away. 2. We sure as shit got in trouble for passing notes. 3. Crime rates were DOUBLE what they are today. 4. I grew up in BFE Vermont & my alcoholic bus driver almost killed us multiple times in inclement weather. IT WORKED OUT FUCKING FINE.

Shitty fuckin comparison. Its obviously a vastly different world now than it was then. Glad you enjoyed not having a phone, but fuck making modern kids abide by the way it was for us decades ago

Who TF said anything about “enjoyed?” Children *necessarily* don’t have the same rights as adults. What specifically about the world today necessitates a positive right to cell phones that didn’t exist previously?

And what of kids incessantly talking? The remedy is send them out/some form of nullifying action, no? The same doesnt work for improper phone use? Im not advocating for kids blasting soundcloud or whatever in class, but we dont have to act like distracting behavior is entirely different with a phone

So you think childrens right should be negative by default? Fuck that, if it doesnt hurt anyone or create a safety concern, where do we draw the line? Are the clocks and windows not also distracting? I dont think we should have kids being used to being institutionalized automatons

John Sisino @smarmyeod.bsky.social

So you don’t know what “positive” vs. “negative” rights are. How am I not surprised? 🙄 We ALREADY know that this hurts people—*the children who are trying to use phones at school.* *By your own standards,* phones should be banned for children at school.

Yeah you got me there, i misunderstood I thought it meant negative= taking away freedom, vs positive= the right to do what you want so long as it wasnt affecting others if you have a kid using a phone in class and distracting others, not good. But why wouldnt we treat the same as talking out of turn

Taking up phones is treating the symptoms of kids using phones in class, and it's doing it very effectively. Have you tried to teach a group of kids anything, recently? Phones are simply an order of magnitude worse than any other distraction I've seen them latch onto. They're distracting to adults!

Two is about the maximum number of kids you can effectively teach at the same time if they've got access to phones.

Yeah, i dont know, sounds like you have classroom experience so you probably have the edge here I just think we'd get better results treating kids how we wanna be treated I dont have an answer for general apathy or a will to disengage from learning, i just know how i treat my kids seems to work

aug 31, 2025, 3:03 am • 1 0 • view

Kozu @kozufox.bsky.social

I agree with your approach in theory, it just doesn't work in a group context. Like, you can't let every kid on a field trip see exactly what they want, because letting them all wander off would be bad, and there's also usually a desired learning outcome everyone in the group should achieve.

areolagrundle.bsky.social @areolagrundle.bsky.social

Thats fair Probably alot of my stance is because of comparing my autonomy as a child to my own kids now Uniforms, shittier funding, now no phones Just seems like another blanket unfair restrictive thing I get distraction being a problem though I want my kids to have a better life than i have

With phones, the problem is that anytime a student is disengaged at all, they're sorely tempted to look at their phone. Disengagement is just a natural part of group learning, students can't keep 100% focus at all times and the teacher can't personally focus on all of them at once.

Kozu @kozufox.bsky.social

To me, it just feels like schools banning a new distraction. I grew up right in the middle of the transition to smartphones, and there were plenty of 'mean' teachers who'd have personal policies of confiscating yours if you had it out. Looking back, those teachers did some of the best jobs.

Kozu @kozufox.bsky.social

But with phones, that dynamic suddenly becomes amplified. The instant a student looks at their phone, they're no longer just disengaged, their focus has completely shifted to something else. They aren't even vaguely aware of what the teacher is doing anymore, so they don't re-engage naturally.

If anything here is a major infringement on personal liberty it’s the “forced to attend a government institution for 12 years” not that you also can’t have your phone there Nonetheless mandatory public education is good

So, uh, since there's an explicit second amendment right to have guns, do you think kids should be allowed to be packing at school, too? There's no constitutional right to a fucking phone being on your person 24/7. Fuck, kids aren't allowed to *chew gum* during class. Phones are worse than that.

Thats fucking dumb as shit bro Obviously all kids have a right to SAFETY phones at school dont make kids less safe And i say let em chew gum too Jesus fucking christ with all the controlling behavior I say let the small stuff slide and treat kids how we would wanna be treated

Napoleon the Chemist @napochem.bsky.social

So kids should just be jabbering off in class, then. Can't restrict their right to babble constantly, that's controlling behavior. Kids. Need. Rules. I know you hate to hear you need to follow rules, but YOU NEED TO FOLLOW RULES. RULES MAKE SOCIETY ACTUALLY FUCKING WORK.

Kids are not using their phones for learning in class lol. They're using them to play Clash of Clans, watch TikTok brainrot, and text their friends. In that order.

Phones are a distraction that can divert attention of even kids who *want* to learn and will distract kids around the little asshole who wants to watch TikTok all through class instead of quietly reading a book, staring into space in La-La-Land, or doodling. Actions affect those around you.
