There were no substantial groups of people in Germany at the time which an American would identify as evangelical. 1/3 Catholics 2/3 Protestants, mostly Lutheran, who are called "evangelisch" in German. May be that's the mix up.
The big difference still is that the Nazi movement was not enabled and carried by Christians. There were some notable Stories of Resistance in both confessions but the majority simply ignored the discrepancy between their beliefs and politics, just like today. They did not explicitly enable Hitler.
I doubt it. There were not so many evangelicals in Germany. Lutherians on the other hand...
Lutherans are here too …. and evangelical 😮
"Lutherans" "Evangelicals" It's pretty much Christians in general, aside from a few half-decent ones
Nearly everyone was Christian back then. Except some communists, and some nazis who hated the "Jewish god" and had tried to revert to paganism ("blah blah goat herders from the desert blah blah blah hunters of the forest blah blah aryan race blah blah").
I'm atheist, and I mostly dislike religions, at least in our contemporary context. But even people born into some evangelical or salafist sects, even the ones who joined the Scientology or Rael, are still my human brothers and sisters.
That's why as much as I hate some of their ideas, I try to : - not mix up people who don't have the same beliefs - take into account the time period. Calvinists in 1545 are not Calvinists today. - avoid to reduce people to their religion, or to reduce a faith to a few people.
I try. I don't pretend to succeed. I have a very hard time with evangelicals and salafists, as many of their beliefs are infuriating. As for Germany, the Protestants were evenly divided between, pro and anti-nazis, but the vast majority did not take any stance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confess...
