For their location, it was on that scale. They denuded most of the Yucatan, southern Mexico and northern Central America. It temporarily allowed their population to explode and then they exceeded the carrying capacity of the land. It's happening all over again.

I saw news about the "new" sites in Peru. But nothing for the locales of the Mayan Empire.
