Based on how things unfolded, there is only one reason that man approached the couple to begin with. But Jonathan died a hero - pushing his beloved husband out of harm's way and taking the bullet himself. His last act on this earth was one of love and that's what I'll always remember.

The reason was a dangerous heating source because the house had been deemed uninhabitable and power had been cut off. The reasons weren't unknown. If people would stop jumping on some of the unsubstantiated stories circulating, a clearer picture emerges.

"Tristan Kern de Gonzales, Joss' husband, described the shooting as a hate crime. He stated that the couple had been repeatedly harassed because they were gay and that their home was burned down following years of threats from neighbors..." Tristan sort of implied it was burnt down purposely.

By leaving a dangerous alternate heat source locked up with their dogs after utilities to their house were cut off and going to a hotel for the night. Tristan can't be trusted, unfortunately. There was a long history of bizarre behaviour and numerous police visits, some for mental health checks.

He did, but his late husband had acknowledged a problem with a propane heater causing the fire. The dog’s skull and lead are different. Somebody went the remains of that fire to find those objects. That’s hate.

I hate to contradict, but witness statements are actually the worst kind of evidence. They are wildly inaccurate. However, I am not discounting his husband's statements. Just your general statement that they are "the very best kind" of evidence.

I didn’t say witness statements were the best, I said direct evidence is the best kind, as in preferable (usually) to circumstantial. Eyewitness is often terrible. But, it’s still evidence. Whether the ADA uses that testimony or a jury weighs it lightly, still evidence. The police are incorrect.
