unfortunately since most of us pay taxes directly to the irs without the involvement of our state, this isn’t easily accomplished, to my knowledge. unless you, as a House rep, have some ideas on that?

Lol why were you fine with subsidizing states that brag about low taxation and lax regulation? Fuck that noise!
because there are lots of innocents everywhere that can’t help where they live. because disasters don’t look at borders. because health crises sweep through everywhere. lots of reasons.
And there are LOTS of innocents in blue states that will suffer. Everyone is suffering.
But they still choose to live there. They vote the way they vote. People make CHOICES. They aren’t always easy, but if it’s that bad, leave. Disasters r different tho. My comments for the daily life stuff. The problem, is that we HAVE been subsidizing them, and they keep kicking us in the teeth for
Those living in poverty do not always have an option to pull up stakes and move to a new location. We should stop subsidizing corporations and giving billionaires tax breaks. We're in a jam right now but we should plan for a time when we're not on the brink of fascism.
Other countries have done it. We absolutely CAN do it. Exchanges and systems could be worked out to assist people moving to their territory of choice. Enough with the excuses. It's time to get busy. newrepublic.com/article/1688...
Secession is illegal/unconstitutional. The last time it was tried, it cost ~750k lives. States have been petitioning Congress to allow them to secede for decades to no avail. When states are admitted to the Union the union is permanent. Destroying our constitutional republic is illogical.
Yes, all kinds of things are illegal these days. But people (even our president) seem to do them anyway. Not sure I put much faith in the "it's illegal" argument. Hopefully, the more blue states are bled dry - more people wont either.
This is no different than people BEGGING to NOT boycott Amazon because SOME non-profits have their “wish lists” there and NEED those supplies. Actually had someone compare pre-Amazon life to BEFORE we had things like medical care and vaccines… 🙄🙄🙄
Well, personally I think marching and boycotts are a waste of time in terms of net yield. I am careful where I spend my money - but that is to make ME feel better. It has done nothing imo to save this democracy.
And will tax the system, but what do u think those companies would do? Think they would change their practices vs going broke? I do
Insurance companies will charge the patient. Imo that will do nothing. Just like boycotting Target and Musk - did nothing (In terms of what is happening). Sorry, I dont agree with that approach.
If ENOUGH people do it, it will. But having the approach of “just me won’t work” then no, it won’t. That’s why we need a leader to unite us. But I am curious, what r ur thoughts on how to get out of this?
That’s why u go to the ER and no the insurance company. How was that not clear?
Yep! Protests r good, but clearly not where they r weak. MONEY is where they r weak, and as long as people keep supporting their practices by buying their shit, nothing will change. I think, those that can, should stop paying their health insurance premiums and use the ER. I get that it will suck
It is EXACTLY your approach- the got us where we are.
EXACTLY how we got here. And I don’t understand the mindset of “more of the same will solve the problem” attitude people seem to have
Because they haven't accepted fucking reality. They think someone/thing is going to save us. They havent been accepting reality since he was elected the FIRST time.
To try and con us with Joe all to push Harris too?! Nope! And the Democrats STILL won’t even bother to listen to us or even TRY to connect with us, but we r supposed to bring Trump down and hand the country over to THEM?! FUCK THAT!
Yep! Dem’s fully lost me after the Hillary/Bernie thing. Had Bernie run, I don’t think Trump would have. People didn’t WANT a stereotypical politician again. Obama was able to connect with us, and act like a real person. To put up HILLARY after that?! To push Bernie aside for HER?! Nope! And then
States have the same mentality. Leaving wouldn’t b easy, but with planning and preparation, it CAN be done. Americans have become WAY too lazy and a “just do it FOR me” country
And continuing to enable the red states and allowing them to continue believing we should all live THEIR way isn’t going to solve anything. Those in red states need to start getting serious about organizing then, rather than continuing to wait on blue states to save them. Even the Dem’s in those
Happening isn’t helpful either. The reality is, that to get out of this, we ALL r going to have to suffer, on some level, as we all should. We ALL have a role of responsibility in this. The whole system needs to b burned down and built up again, new.
I understand that, but MAGA isn’t going to learn anything that way. Getting out of this isn’t going to b easy, and people saying nothing should b done that is going to cause someone any kind of uncomfortableness isn’t living in reality. Offering up solutions of what SHOULD have happened or be
It, tell us how dumb and stupid we r for voting for higher taxes and supporting “welfare queens”. Because they don’t understand the reality of it all, it’s brought us to this exact point.
When it's me and mine vs them - it will ALWAYS be me and mine. And THAT is the position we were forced into. I didnt ask for this. But I sure as HELL am not going to bend over and spread my cheeks for them.
It doesn’t HAVE to be us vs them. Republicans have turned it INTO that
Exactly. I have up until now, never looked at it that way. I still support aid to other countries, and spent my career serving underprivileged communities. But now? In terms of this country? All rules. All "obligations". In the trash.
100% serious… And management decided it was acceptable, apparently, because it’s been going on for days now. So what’s going to happen, is all the GOOD employees with work ethics r now looking for new jobs. Same mind set needs to b applied to red states. Let them sit in their own mud.
what I don’t agree with is the punishment view because there are too many people in those states who are actually blue, who are children, or who do not have the financial means to walk away We do need good leadership to try and figure out how to claw back the means that support this regime
what I’m saying is my efforts are motivated by wanting to by stop ice and to stop the billionaire payout. It is not motivated by a desire to punish a set of people (well ok billionaires excepted 😂).
Good leadership? Lol it is WAAAAAy too late for that. Federal institutions of ALL types have been purposely and pointedly dismantled in a way that they cannot be reconstructed (not for likely decades). Our system of checks anf balances is a lie. Our denocracy is a lie. Ya - fuck red states.
And why should ALL of the Blue states suffer for their Republican values. How’s that different? We r ALL suffering already. It’s like saying we need to vote Dem’s back in because they r at least LESS corrupt than Republicans. U don’t solve a problem by doing what u have always done
That’s the problem tho. If there WAS good leadership, the system broke them. Look at what the DNC has been doing to those that want to fight. NO ONE is getting out of this without getting uncomfortable and EVERYONE need to understand that, because it’s coming whether they want it or not
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Yep! With how divided they have wanted us to b? Now they get the reap the rewards of this. Reminds me of work. We have a day shift and night shift. New girl forgot to fill the EXTRA corn dogs and decided the night shift needed to b taught a lesson, so they stopped doing all prep for us. Yes, I am
This is my question too! I definitely want to stop funding this “administration” (especially since we’d be held hostage if we had some kind of disaster and needed fed funds). But how??
see, i don’t think there’s actually any way to do this without civil war which is why i find it interesting to see a house rep essentially saying this, bc they should know perfectly well how taxes work
What I’ve always thought. But cutting the federal social safety net hurts red states more than blue states so it’s kind of an own goal by Republicans.
sure. but ice, billionaire taxes, gutting of federal agencies (hhs, ssa, doj, etc) is an existential threat to us all regardless of individual state politics
Cutting state and international funding on infectious disease hurts everyone and poverty (and all the associated long-term societal costs) hurts everyone & the wider economy. But controls on tax cuts, gerrymandering, gun control, electoral college reform etc. could achieve minimal harm.
i’m not entirely sure what argument you are making here—that we should or should not attempt to reserve federal taxes to the state they were generated in?
We should reserve more taxes in state but not take away completely from red states, if projects would just cause wider societal & economic harm. But red states willing to meaningfully enagage on issues that benefit all states through economic benefits(e.g. improved gun control) can get more.
one thing i advocated for last january was for california to keep its taxes and put them in escrow to be used in FEMA-style aid to disaster areas (regardless of state)—before i understood the full amt involved for CA [800bn] and the practical difficulty of intercepting this money
but i think mutual aid pacts would be a more complex layer that would develop on top of fed tax claw-back, and lm we even figure that part out; and that alone could precipitate civil war bc this regime very much wants all that money
either way if this regime isn’t stopped, we are all going to suffer
Fair warnings: 1) my response to you was this AM after only 1/2 cup of coffee. 2) I’m never quite sure how to follow the threads on BlueSky as to who is replying to whom so I hope I got it right. But anyway, the initial thought was blue states should stop subsidizing red states.
sure. and my response was that the reason i want (technically all) states to pull back federal funding is to stop ice/billionaire funding. it is not because i want to somehow punish red states. maga is doing that just fine by going after all of us.
yes that hurts red states bc they never bothered with improving things for their residents. no, that’s not my goal. all the blame for those particular consequences goes to those states’ respective govts and politicians but at this point, ALL of us are being hurt via ice/billionaire funding.
You replied that would be nice in your first reply and why. I agree but I also agreed with a later reply that this is impossible because the only way that could happen is that states would have to intercept tax revenue flows from individuals and corps that are currently paid to the US treasury.
But I also asserted that since red states are bigger consumers of transfer payment programs like Medicaid, Social security disability, SNAP, housing, and other programs based on household income AND that MAGA is trying to gut those programs, then it only follows that less revenues of blue state….
….will flow to red states as a result, except that blue state government has little control of it and will see no windfall benefit from. Your reply to me then greatly expanded the discussion to include tax cuts, ice, doj…i.e. well beyond the transfer payments.
The fact is that there is only one issue that matters that is the federal courts, including SCOTUS, upholding all our laws, and taking hardline, and unique measures to enforce their decisions if MAGA chooses to disregard them…
(e.g. any federal judge can deputized a prosecutor, they don’t need to rely on DOJ). So far, no takers, and it looks to a number of constitutional experts that we’re close to losing our system of law, if we haven’t already.
And without a system of law based on democratically made laws, nothing else really matters, including states’ laws. /E
lol okay. maybe i unreasonably expanded (i don’t think so but we’ll set that aside) relevant issues from your pov but reading thru all this you’ve taken this unreasonably seriously, since i also pointed out the basic impossibility of states somehow impounding federal taxes
Take as many deductions as is allowed, and start there. It is hard, because when u have a w-2 job, it’s automatic, so u jsut have to get…creative… 🤣🤣🥰
so that’s an individual response and two observations: hard to coordinate a widespread response to the fed’s rod way, they’d never notice it and makes the fewer who do it more vulnerable to retaliation (the real point is to lose the entire income from a state in full)
That’s why we need a leader to unite us. Too many feel that way, so do absolutely nothing instead, and here we r, country still going down the shitter in record time
100% agreed and sorry for the auto correct mishaps above; I’m not even sure of what the exact word king was supposed to be but I guess the meaning was clear enough😂
I get that all the time! Sometimes I wonder how people understand me 🤣🤣🤣🙂
