You do realize the whole concept of peer reviewed scientific papers means that the results are easy to reproduce! The paper literally tells other scientists in the field how to reproduce the results that the authors achieved. To dumb it down for you its literally a recipe in a cookbook!

What led you to this description of peer-reviewed reports? Articles ("papers") condense hypotheses, methods, procedures, conclusions from authors' POV. Published studies may be unreproduced/irreproducible due to resource issues, refuted premises, flawed design, unique cohorts... They're not recipes

Have you ever personally contemplated reproducing the results published in one (1) peer-reviewed paper? Have you ever heard the words "reproducibility crisis" in that order? Peer review does not come with any such guarantees. It often does not catch blatant fraud until long after publication.

That's a really good & important point you're making! Whenever there's a crisis in society, it's always peer-review that helps us to get out of that crisis, because pf how consistent it is to reproduce the work. For more information, google "reproducibility crisis"

Knowing how to reproduce the results doesn't mean its easy. And peer review doesn't require the reviewers to repeat the experiment.

J H @jpjh88.bsky.social

I'm not saying peer review requires the physical replication, but the underlying premise should be solid. Hell flour, yeast, water, and heat should result in a loaf of bread, how it is assembled can be questioned.

Bullturn3 @bullturn3.bsky.social

Giving the illusion something works is easier the more you know about the subject. If I give you a recipe for bread that doesn't work it is easier to make it convincing if I'm an expert baker. And if you don't actually have to reproduce the recipe than you are just taking my word for it.

Even in _math_, where one could hope in principle that a paper was literally a recipe for getting the result, this is ostentatiously and stupidly wrong. Is Mochizuki's purported proof of the abc conjecture a proof? It's been in the peer-reviewed literature (in a journal he edits) for 14 years.

Kempe's purported proof of the four colour theorem was widely believed to be true from 1879 to 1890. It wasn't proved till 1976 by computer search. There were *errors* in that proof that weren't corrected until it was published in manuscript in 1989. The proof was formalized in Coq in 2005.

I'm also not saying that they achieve the same result, because proprietary interests and patents do play into scientific drug papers. Yet once the patent expires, nobody has any issue creating the generic version.

STEMthebleeding @stemthebleeding.bsky.social

Patents don't "prevent" the making of generics. Pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and chirality play a larger role in preventing the manufacturing of generics than patents do. In the US, a generic drug only has to be "biosimilar" to its counterpart. And biosimilarity is the fair use of drug law.

...that's not how it works.

Only if the process is identical. So what typically happens is pharmaceutical chemists look at the mechanism the drug uses, and find another process that recreates that but utilizes different inactive ingredients. The key word is "bioequivalent". You can draw a mouse. Just don't call it Mickey.

Yea but most generic drugs are 100% the same active ingredients as the Patented drug!

That doesn't mean they're violating the patent. If you've got Mickey Mouse and another mouse, 100% of your sample is a mouse.

Cool, but if they don't actually do that, then they don't know the paper is telling the truth. And that's even assuming the peer reviewers are experts in the field of the paper they are reviewing and always understand the basics of it (which is not always the case.)

Like. I have actually *gotten* a paper published that was literally a "actually, no" response, where we demonstrated that the method outlined in a *published, peer reviewed* did not, in fact, actually fucking work! (And those are *much harder* to get published!)

My brother you do not need to dumb it down she is so very clearly orders of magnitude smarter than you. Unless you’re dumbing it down for yourself. In which case carry on

It's the fundamental principle of the scientific method: providing a repeatable methodology that anyone can use that allows independent confirmation of your hypothesis. Read them long enough, you start to see patterns. Not only in the likelihood of success, but also in the scientists pedigree.

Right so other scientists should be able to repeat my experiment, hopefully they get the same result, but I'm not guaranteeing they get the same results.

Because of a block it took me way too much time to find out you're basically fighting on the side of eradicable diseases? Get fucked, you pinhead fucking antivax piece of shit. No patience left with your sort, especially after years of direct evidence you are the dumbest possible kind of wrong.

Recipe 1: assemble a cohort of 10,000 people, build a vaccine from scratch, follow for 2 months. Recipe 2: build a new Large Hadron Collider, collide 2 protons of 6.8 TeV each together. No, peer reviewers don’t replicate results themselves.

Nothing prevents them from doing so. But the peer reviewers are reviewing the science the author is presenting and determining if they agree with it or not. In reality they are being asked if they could replicate it. Yes since government studies require patient trials that can be cost prohibitive.

Julie Faenza @juliemfaenza.bsky.social

Agreeing with the premise is absolutely not even a LITTLE bit like asking if they could replicate it.

Kevin van Haaren @kevin.crime.group

Cost isn’t the only issue, frequently time is as well. And replications often don’t follow the same methodology, instead using a different method in case there are unknown issues with the original. My 2nd example of the Higgs Boson was replicated using a different detector (still at LHC)

J H @jpjh88.bsky.social

So you had a LHC to attempt to replicate the experiment!

Kevin van Haaren @kevin.crime.group

Same LHC so not a true replication, confirmation of results via a different methodology, not following a “recipe”. There is a reason people attempting to replicate the original cold fusion experiment didn’t use the same equipment.
