I don't know who needs to hear this, everyone I think, but if you send a PDF to your kindle and put 'convert' as the subject it will change it to epub format for you, you're welcome (I posted this on the other place and was surprised by how many people it helped so thought I'd do it here too.)

Epub is a cowpat in the field of electronic publishing. It collapses "non-significant" whitespace - just like HTML does and for the same reasons, rendering typographic design moot. To understand how this mutilates an author's intent, read any book where whitespace indicates a change of speaker.

As someone who creates web pdfs and epubs for a living, I am a little skeptical. How usable are the results? Does it retain paragraph and character formatting? If images have alt text, is that retained? What happens to things like running heads and page numbers?

I loved Paperwhite. I think ColorSoft is an improvement. Faster and great battery time. Best feature is being able to read in any light but that is true of most ereaders

Can you tell me what the main differences you have noticed? I love my paper white because I work on my laptop a lot so the paper white keeps me from getting a headache. Hope that makes sense.
It does make sense. One draw back Amazon products is they are slow. The CS is faster than PW, scrolls faster and page turns are faster. The color is subdued. That’s fine with me. Battery life far exceeds that of my PW
I found for long reads on PW I’d need to recharge. On CS, several days of long reads and down to 87% is a big improvement
It hasn't arrived yet. The 'zone say near the end of November. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Same here. Trying to work out if there is an alternative to buying Kindle books other than real books. As much as I love real books I then always have stacks that I need to move on.
Through your local library you can get books (for free) on Libby. I started using it when I was going to Europe and didn't want to take up room in my carry on bag. You can load them right onto your Kindle. Maybe everyone already knew this but I just started using it and I love it!
It's annoying when a business one likes is owned by businesspeople with bad ethics. Amazon, Loblaws. What do you turn to when the product you like is supporting someone you don't?
I went down this road! 1. Get another e reader (I love my Kobo) 2. Download Calibre (calibre-ebook.com 3. Convert all your kindle library to .MOBI and transfer to your new reader 4. Enjoy and start buying books from another ebook retailer (I use kobo store, and random ones online !)

Kobo is amazing and they have a phone app too. I read a lot on my phone Calibre is also good for removing DRM from ebooks

I got a kindle before they were even available in Canada. It's still alive and doing great. I won't replace it anytime soon.

I think I bought my kindle in 2010 (kindle keyboard). So it's 14y old. I don't want to support Bezos, but the alternative to his online retail seems to be Temu. I don't trust that at all.
eBay is great as is direct from mfg and plenty of local sellers carry ereaders

However, unless it's a very simple straightforward PDF the formatting and line breaks can go very funny and be very distracting to read.
I've never had an issue but maybe all my pdfs were simple!
Aye it's why Not The Work Of An Ordinary Boy still needs to become an e-book - cartoons, "typewriter text" transcriptions of interviews & interrogations, notes portraying messenger pigeon "messages", news articles, photos, omg Brilliant book tho. One of the best we've ever published.

Hey your kindle will have an email address and you can send docs to it directly, you can find it in your Amazon account settings or the actual kindle somewhere in the settings (I forget where 😅)

Another helpful tip is if you borrow an ebook from your library you can keep your Kindle in Airplane Mode and the book will not be automatically returned.

It’s a cool feature, but as a Calibre fan and user that converts a bit better if you have a computer to manage your ebook library. You can choose what kindle you have so it fits the display resolution

I have the opposite problem. Instead of just novels, my Kindle library is cluttered with PDFs (tax returns, electricity & water bills, press releases ...) that have no business being there. I have to keep them; just not in my Kindle library.
