Yeah. All politics is a bit of an “in group, out group” thing but the conservatives have REALLY bet the farm on leveraging the human desire to oppress the “other” who is unlike yourself to stay in power. It’s unacceptable.

That will be the trick. If we can stick to the democratic process then I think everything will be okay. On the other hand, If they throw out the baby with the bath water and abandon the democratic process entirely in order to hold onto power… well… then we have no choice.

I agree completely. It is definitely NOT a zero sum game. Conservatives love to think like that. There is definitely room for everyone to grow, without crowding out each other. We can all thrive. We just have to figure out how to get there.

It does seem like the democrats could do more to sew unity and combat the Republican efforts at divisiveness… it really seems like they have a winning platform and it makes no sense to me why they don’t win more often.

Ah! Yes. One perspective is that women’s spaces separate from men ARE “special rights” even though men also have separate spaces. Because women NEED those spaces to protect them AGAINST men, whereas men clearly do not need separate spaces to protect them against anyone. I have heard the… (+)
And of course, that is mostly because of transphobia. It is mostly because those cisgender women do not agree, fundamentally, that trans women are women. But I think that it is deeper than that too.
It just occurred to me that this statement is really at the heart of the trans rights debate. “No gender should have any rights not afforded to all genders” Trans women deserve the same protection as cisgender women. But some cisgender women are unwilling to share their spaces with trans women.

I think there is a majority consensus on… “No religion should have any rights not afforded to all religions” …and… “No race should have any rights not afforded to all races” …but… “Neither men nor women should have any rights not afforded to all genders” …would probably be controversial.
And there are a bunch of things that we could add to that list of “race and gender”. Religion, for one.

But I agree with you that “equality” is essential and we must protect the rights of the minority AGAINST the majority for all those things that we can agree are rights everyone should have.
That’s interesting! I was going to go the other way with that. I was going to draw a distinction between “equality” and “equity” and suggest that a truly equitable world is impossible so insisting on democracy while working to improve equity where possible was the way to go.
Which is really kind of crazy if you think about it Right? I mean we WANT to have BOTH a democratic society AND an equitable society. But we can’t So we have to chose. Which one do we fight for unequivocally? And which one to we do our best to advance until it begins to countermand the first one?

I wholeheartedly agree. And if one values “democracy”, that is a massive thing to have to address. I don’t see any simple solution, and I’m worried that many people DO see a simple solution, and it is a horrible one.

It really is! I am a minimalist and I was introduced to the game by a maximalist so it is wicked fun discussing our different play styles and seeing how my bases differ from hers. I am having a wonderful time.
It’s a game on Steam. Kind of a city building game but it’s a factory and conveyor belts instead of a city and roads. I’m really enjoying it.
