Instead, they bit off more than they could chew. In addition to the problems listed above, they pushed Finland and Sweden into NATO, gave EU time to build its defense industries, and have started selling themselves to China..
PJ (@pst55.bsky.social) reply parent
russia might have "won" the war by only taking the current Kherson/Zap. land they occupy now (solidifying Crimean occupation and giving them the Sea of Azov) and then playing defense (resulting in minimal casualties and equipment losses). Sadly, the rest of the world wouldn't have done anything.
PJ (@pst55.bsky.social) reply parent
If putin dies and a flunky takes over, he can: 1-Keep the war going 2-Agree to ceasefire (keeping current lines) 3-Trade some land to regain EU access 1 is tough cuz russia keeps getting weaker. 2 is tough cuz the whole economy is military and oil. 3 is tough cuz it wouldn't be popular.

The ingredients for a coup (no fuel, over a million dead and wounded, high interest rates, high inflation, the sound of drones every night, etc.) are coming together. Just need to add a bit more (e.g., bomb all commercial airports) and also make the oligarchs feel the pain. Could happen, IMHO.
