Catastrophically much.

I kept complaining about a really high pitched sound that I couldn’t pinpoint the source of, that seems to fade in and out at random. Supposedly nobody else could hear it. Was told that I might have tinnitus. Today i found there’s a tiny alarm buzzer a HVAC cabinets that has been going off...
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
These things are weird enough to require a device like that, for some weird use case where you are leaning forward to look down at a label and need to type in the SKUs.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
That wouldn’t look too out of place in a 1994 turret forklift.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
Meant to type « wireless », somehow typed « wireels », now i’m getting dumb ideas about data-transmitting eels.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
That is scarily accurate, and i hadn't though of looking at it that way. And LLMs make it a bit worse 'cause you don't have different usernames and other details as hints to how reliable or not that bullshit is, it's all coming from one single source with one single voice.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I absolutely would want to, but i’m also absolutely still crashing when attempting to be social, and i haven’t escaped the Middle East yet.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
The deeper argument is that money itself is entirely an artificial construct with arbitrary rules that is somehow accepted by most. It could all stop being a thing if people decide to stop playing along.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, i can relate to that. It’s a hardware mismatch, not more than that.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Most of my memories related to payphones are either scavenging quarters from them, or either calling my mom to tell her i won't be home for dinner, or that i broke my bike (again) and need someone to come recover me. Nothing bad associated with them. They were just kinda, always there as an option.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
It's what the company, our partners and our clients use, so no way around it. I've taken the habit of screenshotting important messages i send in case they mysteriously never existed after restarting Teams.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Freshly booted, 3 tabs in Edge, Sharepoint x2 + Jira. Outlook, Excel and Teams open, nothing else major. 500Gb SSD. It's not a hardware issue, it's Microsoft's junk being absurd. I can open things just fine in Libreoffice, I can browse just fine with Firefox. But i can't use that for workstuff.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, i know! I just find it insane that with that much hardware, they still find a way to make it slow. There’s no reason for it to be that bad.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
AaaAaaAaaaAaAaaaargh!
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, i know the actions i can take, but i know it won’t last. I’m just complaining about it out of frustration, coworkers have the same issues, it’s just absurd how at this point I need to spend so much time fighting business software to get any work done. It shouldn’t be like that.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve just been using whatever OS works best for the purpose as far as personal machines, so I’m running a fun blend of everything. But work is strictly locked down HP laptop on the domain with the standard software package for business. At least i got to be local admin…
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I personally hated XP, stuck with Win2K on all my machines until Win7 came out! So yeah, i have experience in making it work on hardware it wasn’t meant to!
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, i am stuck using it, signed/approved documents require it for business reasons.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U, from 2021. And it’s really the software that is bullshit, i can run VR games acceptably on that laptop, but MSTeam, Outlook, Sharepoint and Acrobat are just running like garbage. If i kill all the “business” stuff, it works great! But this is the work laptop.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
It did support USB, and with 48bit LBA enabled, i think 2Tb is the limit it’ll support for disk size. The killer was the 32bit memory size limit. Win2k-x64 would have been amazing.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I still have a Win2000 laptop, Thinkpad T42, that i still use for messing with older hardware. It’s impressive what it’ll still do. But that’s personal stuff, not business.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
It’s incredible how useless and frustrating “business” tech is these days. 8 cores at 3.9Ghz, 32Gb of ram, 1Tb SSD, and i can’t even scroll a webpage or a PDF without lagging. I can’t search a MSTeams conversation without it giving me results from local files. Sorting by date is not an option.

There should simply be a threshold that once crossed the rest of the week becomes weekend, even if it's Tuesday..

It's a bit why things get stupid sometimes with language and such. In those situations, i just want it to sound professional and assured, so i don't really care what "it" says, as long as the right information is transmitted. When speaking to friends, i want to mean the words i say. It's harder.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I've gotten the comment a few time from some people who know me a bit more that it's like if i spontaneously was someone different. Because yeah, internally, i'm pulling out a character and making it say things, and it doesn't matter as much because it's just the character saying things, not "me".
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, i get that a lot, especially when doing things like giving training or getting involved in engineering-related meetings. My mental picture of that is still always just the dragon-raptor-y me sitting behind human-me kinda puppeting me through it with a dumbass "If only they knew..." grin.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing is, at this point, i've been myself for long enough that i pretty much know how it works. I'm really just wondering if it's really like that for everyone, or, well, how does it work for other people. So many things still feel so alien to me, when involving other people and such...
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
In a good state, it feels like all the side-threads are nearly 1:1 with the main thread and everything feels real. If things get complex, they run parallel to the main thread, with extra overhead to figure which way to go. In a bad state, they drift apart, and I see the world through a tiny viewport
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
A lot of this is brought by being stuck in bed for a stupid amount of time, until i just went "Wait, something is missing." bringing up one process that was missing, which just immediately pointed out the deadlock, and then i just switched to instantly making coffee, breakfast, getting laundry done.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
I'm not sure for how many questions like "How many side-threads feed into your brain's main thread?" would make sense, or be relatable.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
I'm having one of those days where i'm thinking about thinking, and it's still weird. I really would love to be able to compare how my own internal brain-things compare to other people's, but it's hard to just throw into words, especially without computer analogies...

I really don't know why it makes a difference to Steam, but yeah. I figured it out when i tried searching for my oldest Steam emails, and the oldest i got was the confirmation of e-mail change, and the purchases after that one match up with the oldest ones i can see on Steam.

That Steam purchase history thing is making me wonder where purchases from 2003/4ish to 2008/9ish went. I absolutely remember being pissed at Steam back then when i was still working in the computer store for breaking LANs, and making game sharing a pain. But history starts in 2009 for me.

What really bothers me from a technical point of view there is that stored data doesn't require cooling. It's just there. If it's not being accessed, then nothing is happening. Going through pictures to decide which to delete and which to keep would be the part that'd actually takes power.

Considering how things were back then, and how phone numbers were still assigned, it's not as if it revealed much that couldn't have been found anyway. Wanted to call my neighbor's house? Just add 1 or 2 to my own phone number! And what you could do with a phone number back then was very limited.

Also, it'd be fun to abuse some features of the "swap". Teleporting into water would create a creature-shaped blob of water at the previous location. But that whole thing might be a pain with the instant change of air pressure, ears might not be happy.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd want mine to work in a way where i "ghost" to the target location, position myself, and just swap place with the "ghost". No special sound effects, just maybe some level of popping due to pressure difference as things swap. Maybe a light blur effect and "light carried over" flash in darkness.

It is, i hate it. I've been getting crap that doesn't address the issue, is wrong, but clears the symptoms temporarily, as a side-effect, without fixing the issue. There's an issue. Power-cycling makes the issue go away for a bit. The suggested fix requires a system restart. "Hey, it works!"
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social)
I am so tired of getting "This is what (some LLM AI) said to try" answers when attempting to troubleshoot things at work... Especially since so much of it leads to fake-fixes.
Pyxaron (@pyxaron.bsky.social) reply parent
What i find fun with this is that it can be, in a way, both at the same time, and possibly more! How it feels can be extremely subjective to each of those involved, without necessarily causing conflicts. And i really love to see that being played with.

From seeing some people use AI in a work context... I think the problem with AI is really addiction. It only "kinda" works for what they want it to. But it's always a little off, not good enough, it could be better. So they tweak parameters a little, and re-run it. Over and over and over and ...
