Well, we largely stopped investing in public infrastructure. How many of our schools still use buildings constructed in the 60s and 70s? We can’t even get behind migrating utility lines underground. A lot of our cities look like they did 30 or 40 years ago because public investment shriveled up.
To be clear: attacking unis and medical centers is a double blow for medium-sized and small cities. My county’s number one employer is the university, its number three employer is the hospital. We’re fucked.
