In X-Men #59, they mention a few times that the Sentinels all respond to an alarm on one side of the base, which allows the X-Men to sneak in the other side. Do we ever learn who set that alarm off? They make kind of a big deal of it here.

19. Save all the files you work on, including from the colorist and letterer. You never know when they'll be useful to have for things like self-promotion. 20. The urgent will always take precedence over the important. If there's a project that's important to you, find a way to give it urgency.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
18. If you ever don't know what to do about anything, don't hesitate to ask other pros for advice. They can be more open than you think.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
17. Find a rep to handle your art sales, and a rep to handle your convention appearances. They don't have to be the same person, but they can be. It'll make your life so much easier.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
16. When drawing a cover, always leave room to sign an autograph. You will be signing that thing for the rest of your life, so do yourself a favor!
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
15. Being part of a studio is great, because the social incentive is to BE working. Other places might want you to be FINISHED working, or to be doing something other than work, but in the studio, that's where the incentive is to be at the desk, in the process of creating, and that's THE BEST.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
14. Make sure you have some creator-owned work. Having images that you wholly own and control can allow you to take advantage of opportunities (large and small) that you can't if you have to ask for permission.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
13. Doing franchise work is to be part of the legacy that tons of other creators have been building together over time. Being a part of that, and making it part of your own legacy, can be very valuable.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
The words in that contract will be the only thing they know about what you're supposed to be doing with each other. 12. With a good deal, when the project is a success, everybody wins.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
11. When you negotiate a contract, remember that you're not signing with your buddy who hired you, you're signing it with the company that buys the company your buddy worked for years later, and has never heard of you.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
9. The comics that people always remember are their first comic, and their favorite comic. Trying to pick projects that you think will be those things to readers will really help to build your fan base. 10. When drawing random civilians in the background, don't forget to give women purses.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
7. They can't all be winners. The ones that aren't are probably not as bad as you think, so don't sweat it. 8. Those drawing triangle things are way easier to use than t-squares. They do pretty much the same thing, but are much more maneuverable.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
4. A book is as good as the creative team makes it. Find people whose teamwork you can count on, and who can also count on yours. 5. Trust your editors. Their instincts and experience got them to where they are, and just like you, they want to make the best book possible. 6. Rim lighting.
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
2. Figure out formulas for drawing your characters that makes them easier and faster to draw. Animation instruction books teach these principles WAY better than illustration books do. 3. Buy toy cars from CVS-- so much easier and faster than looking for reference!
Reilly Brown ✩ SDCC table HH-01 (@reillybrown.bsky.social) reply parent
1. Text placement-- typing the dialog out onto the page layouts REALLY helps to compose the page better. Plus once you see how much space the word balloons will be covering up, you realize how much space you don't need to draw on, which can save a lot of time.
