I am so introverted that I would never have done something like this even a year ago. But it turns out sharing my story, and sharing the actions I'm taking to push back -- that's common ground that takes us quickly from strangers to people in solidarity
What was cool about this short hike (other than seeing the Holiday House in person) was that I struck up a conversation with a stranger who ended up being a retired healthcare worker. We spoke about the current Horrors, and she did me a huge favor by driving me back to the train station.
Someone asked me what victory against the forces seeking to occupy Chicago looks like. Obviously, those forces being repelled is the goal, but there are layers to what success looks like in these deteriorating conditions. The first is to successfully resist the normalization of military occupation.
"Burning out is a tool of the oppressor" says one of the @surj.org speakers tonight. Keeping grounded and trying not to get overwhelmed is really key.
I've done as many of these webinars and trainings as I can in the past 2 months, starting with @indivisible.org's One Million Rising Even though it's a small action, I've gotten a bit uncomfortable and started up conversations with strangers. I've told them about myself, what moves me, how I engage

I've seen her in public places 3 times in the past year, and I've never seen any mayor of any other city I've ever lived. It's pretty cool. We even took a photo together and she told me to say hi to my parents 😆

That Pritzker press conference was... surreal, and I think marks a significant moment of escalation in the constitutional omni-crisis. This was the governor of a state saying plainly the Union itself is being torn apart and his state is being militarily invaded by an authoritarian regime.

I'm aware that the President likes to go on television and beg me to call him to ask for troops. I find it strange, as Chicago doesn't want troops. I also have experience asking him for assistance – just to have the rug pulled up from underneath me when execution meets reality.

We know raising our voices works. #Republicans and #Democrats together have now said no to NIH budget cuts. Now they have to protect NIH from interference from #Vought and his cronies. They need to put these protections in statutory, not report language in the bill. End/
And don't forget that the Supreme Court has mostly sided with the administration on its destruction of the NIH. Congress: Surely you're able to do more than handle the budget of the NIH.
Keeping the NIH afloat has many moving pieces, beyond the House and Senate agreeing on its budget, and Vought is one of the ghouls who must be defeated
So, kudos to both #Democrats & #Republicans in the House for their draft mark-up for next year's #budget, which maintains funding for #NIH (just like the Senate). This is rare, true #bipartisanship and should be praised. But #RussellVought will not be stopped by an appropriations bill. Why? 1/
Maintaining the NIH budget is only good if it goes to actual science. Bhattacharya's buddy Kulldorf laid out a 12-point roadmap to replace the NIH with a pseudoscience engine, and divert the budget to their cronies. They seem to be following it, and may be expanding the idea to NSF etc too. 🧵:

Thus, NIH and science are just one piece of a coordinated fascist threat: occupying cities, attacking education, universities, marginalized people, immigration, diversity, equality and pluralism. Science cannot flourish without fixing all those things.
This is very good news. BUT, as we saw this year when NIH was operating under a flat budget, Trump and Russell Vought can effectively destroy NIH even if Congress holds the budget flat. To stop Vought and make sure NIH can function, Congress must go much further than “no cuts to budget.” 1/
