This from Riley Gaines is why trans people freak out when Democrats try to carve out some compromise over sports. The politicians and activists attacking trans people are not interested in compromise! They're interested in our eradication from public life and are exploiting sports to that end

This is Ms. Gaines’s intuition as an activist, too: If people accept the premise that transgender women do not belong in women’s sports, then they have conceded that transgender women are not fully, truly women. As she sees it, more sweeping restrictions of transgender people flow from there, including the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that states can ban gender-affirming care for minors and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s change of its eligibility rules to bar transgender women from competing in Olympic women’s sports. “The gender ideology movement is a house of cards, and I believe it’s lying on that sports issue,” she said. “This will be the card that makes all of it crumble.”

sidewalk chalk art. There's a cute anthropomorphic beat wearing headphones with text 'let the beet drop'. There are four monkeys: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, and wearing headphones and staring at mobile phone oblivious to real world (no evil). There's Chinese text I can't translate, alas. And more. faded sidewalk chalk art. There's a lot going on here. Text in the background: We the sheeple. Text at the bottom: What they hate in you is missing in them. Depicted: A weightlifter lifts a barbell. He's standing on an upside-down wok that has one eye (which is looking up at the weightlifter). The weights on the barbell are peace signs sidewalk chalk art: hexagon filled with a grid of triangles constructed from circular arcs rendered in colored chalk with a gradient heading out from the center. Tucked in the corner: sidewalk chalk art. pretty surreal. an anthropomorphized egg has climbed a ladder and addresses a few neighbors. text below reads ¿dónde están los huevos?. text above is in Chinese which I can't read, but when I plugged 'where are the eggs?' into Google translate and tried a few dialects, I noticed the Traditional Chinese translation had a few characters in common. The neighbors... Well, there's a lady with a cloud head carrying a turnip. There's a caftan-wearing rainbow-headed figure carrying a chard? kale? leaf. There's a ✳-headed figure carrying a loaf of bread. There's a potato-bodied person covered with human eyes. The potato-eyes thing makes me wonder if I'm overlooking puns in the other figures. Off the the side, mostly out of frame: a snake (Happy New Year!)

Okay, I gotta tell you the woodpecker thing. The science of protective headgear depended on the idea that woodpeckers have tongue that wind around their heads internally, and this protects them from brain injury. The key study was in the Lancet in 1976. Every study referenced that initial 1/

I'm a Map Guy because I value how scientists think and I value how specialists in the humanities think. Maps are technical projects that use math and data science and satellites and lasers and theodolites. But they also are semiotics and history and epistemology and language. Both and.

The Critic — Weegee, 1943 Gelatin silver print 10 1/2 × 12 1/2in. (26.7 × 31.8 cm)

The Whitney Museum's description: Two elegantly dressed women in fur coats and tiaras at a social event, with a third woman in a coat looking on. Although he was known for photographs that appeared spontaneous, Weegee’s The Critic was the result of a carefully orchestrated scenario. On the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera House’s sixtieth season, Weegee brought along a famous regular from Sammy’s, a bar that he frequented on the Bowery. He plied his accomplice with cheap wine and coaxed her into this photograph of two of New York’s most famous high society benefactors, Mrs. George W. Kavenaugh and Lady Decies. Weegee’s trademark explosive flash, which allowed him to photograph at night and gave a floodlit effect to the exposure, bleached out skin tones and set up stark contrasts between the white-clad rich and the grubby poor. To further intensify his manufactured confrontation, he cropped the print to eliminate sideline spectators. When Acme Newspictures ran the photograph, a caption was added that turned its sardonic commentary on ostentatious wealth into moral indignation: “She is aghast at the quantity of diamonds in evidence at a wartime opening of the Met, but the bejeweled ladies are aware only of Weegee’s clicking camera.”
