I feel like in the 1980’s/90’s this would be a major plot point in a Tom Clancy novel, and the operation would be carried out as an off-book, illegal black op, with various characters trying to cover it up lest they face congressional hearings. Now the President just announces it.

Both how a Senator votes and whether a candidate suspends their campaign are completely within the prerogative of the individual, so it's not that different at all. If Obama couldn't control members of his party in the Senate as President, he certainly couldn't control a candidate as ex-president.

Losing candidates dropping out and endorsing their preferred candidates is normal. At a certain point they can't raise enough money to keep the lights on and have to quit. Sanders should have been reaching out to them instead of assuming they would stay in until the end and let him get a plurality.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he is sending CHP officers assigned to Crime Suppression Teams into San Diego, Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Central Valley, Sacramento, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He will, among other things, use predictive policing to suppress “criminal activity.”

The Crime Suppression Teams will: 1. Identify and suppress criminal activity in high-crime areas through data and intelligence-led policing. 2. Conduct proactive enforcement operations designed to deter and disrupt organized crime. 3. Provide increased CHP visibility and presence in communities most impacted by crime. 4. Support local law enforcement by sharing intelligence, coordinating enforcement, and assisting with investigations. 5. Maintain strict accountability through structured leadership, clear reporting, and operational oversight.

We saw this conflict in Ferguson where the population has shifted to Black people moving out from the city but the centers of power were still controlled by the descendents of white flight who used their power to exploit the new residents through fines to keep taxes low.

There's also an issue of us stopping the incorporation of inner ring suburbs as the city grows. Growing population pressure creates a need for changes to be more like a city, but long term residents often resist change.

As small as the trans community is, the group of potential voters who would vote for Democrat only if they oppose trans rights is negligible. Democratic politicians need to learn that voters can only have a couple of issues that are dealbreakers and they therefore have to prioritize.

The test I'm using now for Democratic politicians is if they continue to retreat to secure the border language, especially while doing nothing to defend immigration. Trump has shown us what it takes to satisfy people who want to secure the border, and it is both evil and deeply unpopular.

People will respect certain disagreements if they believe the person is principled. They won't tolerate anything if it's been focused grouped to death to be the abstractly optimal statement to appeal to an imagined median voter.

It's important to understand this because it means you can't get them to care about the deaths by illness of strangers. They see it either as strengthening their group by purging weakness or weakening some it other group by reducing their numbers.

In the eugenics world, the state and other authorities cannot fail you by failing to provide health care, to do real medical research, to invest in community health, etc. To them, those who die failed the nation by being defective in some way or making themselves impure.

the problem for Ds right now is not winning elections. they are doing fine at winning elections. the problem is what happens *between elections.* as in, if you don't fight fascism between elections, election outcomes start not to matter. 1

Driving along Clairemont Drive this evening, I saw a lot of kids using the new protected bike lanes. I don't remember seeing anything biking there before.

I hadn't got to the part where he thinks we should value causing material harm to immigrants and asylum seekers because somehow that will get the Republican voter in the Midwest whose views are completely disconnected from reality to vote for Democrats. Obama tried that and failed.

Finally, he should learn that we're sick of focus group driven politicians and be embarrassed to cite them while making his argument.

Namely, he thought Harris's racial identity should have been enough to get minority voters to support her. He also doesn't seem to understand compositional effects on election demographics (that a shift in the number of people in a group voting for a party can mean different people are voting).

The worst part was how he slowed no concern about a politician having an affair with an employee of an agency they oversee. All of his concern was for the politician. He also revealed that he has a very limited understanding of diversity that I'd expect from a conservative.

Listening to Scott Peters on today's Voice of San Diego Podcast really makes me want to replace him with someone better, but I also learned that if the redistricting plan passes I'd be moved out of his district again.

While that's great for the inland region, I hope you can appreciate how from the perspective of someone in San Diego that the choice between existing slow and unreliable direct connection and a connection that eats up its speed advantage with longer distances isn't exciting.

Many people are wondering why we shouldn’t simply electrify the existing rail line, which is incredibly popular (when it’s not closed due to landslides and bluff collapses). New HSR tracks via the inland route would be a lot more expensive. www.kpbs.org/news/environ...

It's a shame that California high-speed rail didn't start as a 30 minute connection from downtown Sacramento to downtown San Francisco. It would have been transformative for both cities, and a proof of concept for the entire state.
