That seemed intentional to me - because in the book, the inner monologue of Murderbot constantly describes them as messy and stupid, and you see them from their pov rather than the third person as in the show. I thought it was a good compromise!

You've also been creating! Does not matter if it was the same genre or something opposite. Now you've exposed your brain to both sides - artist and consumer. You've trained yourself to see these things even more!

I am not saying you are wrong! But it is difficult to quantify this feeling because we learn more each year, and that is why things seem repeatable on their own, regardless.

Not arguing, just a note. Consider this: you have been spending more relative time with media than 10 years ago unless you were hiding somewhere. Which would make you now more knowledgeable and able to see more connections where previously you've missed them.

*cracks knuckles* okay so you know how the media has a problem with taking snippets of scientific studies out of context and writing articles which mislead the public? now imagine a computer program is doing that when you ask it questions about scientific literature but also it makes stuff up.

Very american! BTW, do these trucks transfer people? In vertical or horizontal stacks? I jest! Please do not take offense. My initial post was about americann-nes of the thing and about personal transport, not the trucking hauling and other heavy weight transporting. Which trains are good at as well

Again, there are reasons why you may need to haul hay bails through the sticks. They are valid here as well! What is not sensible though is to look at extreme ranges for general use. Like daily or weekly commute, that kind of thing, because you have that covered.

I still think this is very "american", and it does not make sense to me there are basically no trains roaming this vastness. I get it there are reasons, and challenges, but at least some of them seem... cultural? Denial? "We do not need trains! This is the way!".

I think that post hit all the wrong buttons, and I apologise for that! What I meant was something that I would tell a friend here, in UA, like "just take the bloody train and stop this nonsense about driving". Should have worded that differently, my bad!

Yeah, and that is why I've said it is a very american thing! I do think if you measure everything in 8h drives you have a good basis for railroad, and you will no longer need these long drives. But here is here and there is there, and might not make sense

Of course, it is more complex. It always is! Still, it is such a shame because it feels like a match made in heaven, where railroads would greatly enhance lives for everyone.

Maybe to put it this way: wanting an option to be able to drive 4000 miles and needing it are very different things. Wanting it daily(ish) is strange, and the reasons for it seem very "american". Also - I do not think you can fit more than a bail into the car the original topic mentioned!

Thanks for the reply, and I am sorry if I came out mean! I did intend it as a bit of a jab, but I did not expect how much pain it caused people. Apologies for that! But isn't this still very "american" with all this extreme range driving and lack of railroad?

...yeeees, so why not build railroads all over the place instead of driving cars for days? This seems very "american" to me! Forgive me if I seem to be mean, I am not trying that. Just an observation from here, where it would be silly not to take the train. If you have that option.

I mean, of course not, but that's the point of it being american, isn't it? Driving even 200+ km makes me screaming internally, and i do not get why you would want to do it for days non stop, unless you have no other option.

Sure, but the original post was about long-range vehicles. I do not mean that it is always a good option or even a good one - there is no one size fits everyone - but if you have to drive 200km+ every day, that sounds... sad? And very american! "Drive a tin can for days instead of relaxing in one!"

Easy! You build a station nearby! Sorry, I am being silly here. Still, this is what I was getting at - very "american"! Lack of trains seems a part of the package. But what makes sense here might not make sense there, and I am not trying to judge, just to observe. Maaaaybe with a bit of irony.

That is why I was saying this is very american! I sure do not get it, but hey, what silly here might not be silly there and vice versa? And the other very american thing is that many people took it too close to the heart and as an insult to them (and not to my fellow ukrainians, who do have trains)

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process: - data centers pollute our environment - energy use drives up costs - content theft robs creators of income - the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages - using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence - the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

For the folks suggesting I'm promoting science fiction works from this millennium because I want an extra sale or two 1. I assure you I am doing fine, thanks for your concern 2. Otherwise FUCK YES support currently living/working writers please and thank you, they need to eat and live in a house

This this I would add: When you are old, do not finish with your multi-volume epic. Pick smaller projects, that you know you can finish in the time remaining to you. https://dice.camp/@FredKiesche/115009755382851615

I need folks to know "classics are classic for a reason" re: creative work is not the great argument you think it is, mostly because it leaves entirely unexamined the *reasons* some things persist in culture, of which "quality," subjective in any event, is only one reason and often not the main one.

Every time these AI evangelists open their mouths, they reveal how utterly incompetent they are at life. Just completely useless people, unable to function as adults in the most rudimentary ways.

A perfect encapsulation of what I simply _do not comprehend_ with a lot of (supposed) AI use cases: Surely it takes you _longer_ to _explain_ to the AI what you want it to do, then to just do it yourself manually (for instance in this case, simply typing "hey babe, 15 minutes late, love u")???

Of note: NCOSE is what they started calling themselves after a rebrand. Before that they were the openly evangelical Christian watchdog group Morality in Media. They've intentionally branded themselves in a way that seems, at a glance, more professional and less extreme.

Straczynski expressed the highest regard for Trias and ABC, but he said that he believes In addition to Janine's new look, described in notes on one DIC character drawing as The show also will contain less satire and less subtle, sophisticated verbal humor. image
