Could be Ellen. Depends on the amount of water etc. That’s usually the problem I have.

Yesterday at the Shepparton Art Museum @sam_shepparton to see the Brett Whitely Exhibition. I loved the gestural drawing of a young wren bathing. I sketched it using a fountain pen. Really enjoyed the exhibition and our second visit to the museum with Pat, Alison and Claire.

Once a month I drive to Ballarat to have fun drawing with a Sketchclub organised by @annelangdon. Last Monday we had a focus on scribble drawing, (for want of a more descriptive term), and a response to a poem. For the drawings I usually use either a fountain pen or ballpoint.

I particularly like the raised little finger Ellen.

Oh, what leaves does the fair Patricia Joan select from the ground for me to paint.

Thanks Ellen.

Birds in flight. A few washes with this watercolour and I wasn’t sure I should stop but here we are.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social) reply parent
A rewarding activity Ellen. Sounds like you enjoyed the day.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social) reply parent
The paint takes longer to dry and is easier to rework and it give a bit more of a shine.

As usual leaves collected from the ground in Kalimna bushland by Patricia Joan for me to paint. On @st.cuthberts.mill hot press paper and I experimented with adding a few drops of gum Arabic to the paint mix.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
A watercolour study of a eucalyptus tree nearby. I enjoyed paint this and had to tell myself to stop as I knew I was about to overdo it. Something that has happened all too frequently.

I thought you would enjoy seeing the sisters. Don’t cross the sisters - blood is thicker than partners.

Sunday morning brushwork before I head to from a white gum in Victory Park, Castlemaine. These leaves are from a gum tree in Victory Park, Castlemaine, picked up by Pat on our way to @johnnybaker.au for croissants.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social) reply parent
It is tricky Ellen. Sometimes I paint a small dab and then clean the brush and wash tha paint around with clean water.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
I enjoyed the challenge of painting this watercolour today. Because I don’t do any underdrawing I have to keep checking which layer goes on top and I do get confused. Maybe that’s because I’m getting old. Nice, dry, chewed eucalyptus leaves.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree Pam. The trick for me is to have the wash light enough.

This painting attempts to capture the quiet stillness of Franklin reservoir in Frankston, at dawn, where the water meets the sky in a soft, muted harmony. Influenced by Andrew Wyeth’s restrained palette and his ability to evoke deep emotion through simplicity.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
Landscape. It’s easier to paint watercolour on rough or cold press paper but I wanted to see how I could use hot press paper for this work.

This morning’s leaf selection from the native bushland in Kalimna Park where Pat and I walk each morning at sunrise. A magical time to walk.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
Watercolour of eucalyptus from Kalimna bush in Castlemaine. The small branches are broken off trees by wind and birds such as parrots and cockatoos. This is painted on hot press paper.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
Friday leaf watercolour. Pat selected this because she liked the geometric chomping of leaves by insects. I don’t know what insects.

Thanks Ellen. I spent time last week trying to locate how we had communicated and the last place I thought of looking was email. Since I retired I virtually stopped reading emails which is odd given that as I consultant emails were my lifeline.

Hello Pam, I use hot press for plants, leaves and flowers and sometimes for other things. Generally I use cold press for landscapes but I intend to try hot press to see how I go. I agree that hot press seems to add to clarity and it works for the way I paint leaves.

Today’s eucalyptus leaves collected from the ground by Patricia Joan. Lots of green leaves on the ground because of cockatoos and parrots chomping away. Saunders Waterford hot press paper.
Sam Grumont (@samgrumont.bsky.social)
Today’s watercolour. The left is a study and the right a larger version. Colours are raw sienna, burnt sienna and Van Dyke brown.

Interesting thought Ted. I think what is left out leads our mind to wander and wonder, which is why I like walking in the fog. The beauty of the extra white, the space left empty, is called yohaku no bi in Japanese. The concept was borrowed from Chinese ink wash paintings.
