Unfriendly reminder that Mariupol, a city of over 400,000 mostly russian speaking Ukrianian was surrounded by the russian military for months and bombarded mercilessly. We might never know how many civilians died from hunger and russian bombs, but there are many mass graves visible from space.

The function of verification, which I argue is one of democracy’s three core functions, alongside deliberation and accountability, has shifted. Once carried out by institutions, it is now pushed onto the public to navigate vast unfiltered information flows, as recipients of information & amplifiers.

Meanwhile Ukrainians are hitting russian energy infrastructure on a nightly basis now. This sort of sustained campaign is a new development. Hard hitting cruise missiles are coming online which will do far more damage than the lighter drones used so far. This is the time to hit russia, hard!
Ghost of Kyiv (@samvydav24.bsky.social) reply parent
If you're a pro-Ukraine advocate, the argument is simple. Russia is losing. It hopes to grind down Ukraine, but so far all it's done is smash its head against the wall, while losing people, material and crippling its own economy which is on the verge of record deficits.
Ghost of Kyiv (@samvydav24.bsky.social) reply parent
Russia of course is aware of this. They can't defeat Ukraine in the field of battle which is why it is increasingly resorting to terror tactics. Massive drone/missile attacks against Ukrainian civilian population with the hope that it will force Kyiv into concessions it can't get otherwise.
Ghost of Kyiv (@samvydav24.bsky.social) reply parent
Taking a step back, a picture emerges- russia's massive military spending increase indicates that Soviet reserves have run out and recruitment is getting more expensive. Meanwhile still no breakthroughs and Ukraine continues to extract massive costs for every square kilometer gained.
Ghost of Kyiv (@samvydav24.bsky.social)
For all the talk of russia's big summer offensive, there has been conspicuously little analysis of what it has accomplished. Which is a whole lot of nothing. Ukraine's position remains difficult, but the mistakes of the past- overestimating russia while underestimating Ukraine's resilience continue.
