GAMING THINGS WE THINK ARE COOL!! - In the RPG mode of Revengers of Vengeance (US) / Battle Fantasy (JP), your character's profile art will change as you play. Here's an example with Sara- at the start of the game, after losing some battles, and after levelling up a bit.

A screenshot of Revengers of Vengeance from the RPG mode, showing the stats screen for Sara at the start of a new game. Her body facing away from the camera, she is in a battle stance looking fiercely at the camera. Sideways to the camera, she is in a battle stance with a determined look on her face as she yells.

Thank you for writing this, that was a really interesting read! I like that this game sounds like it tackles the idea of disparate people not getting along at all and you trying to bring them together, really putting the work in across both the character interactions and battle parts

On a lighter note: said site tagged Melty Blood: Type Lumina as romance but not the Tsukihime remake which is very, very funny.

With those last reposts about Harukanaru. I'll always think about the time a certain website created a "better" version of the Switch eShop that, by default, filtered out anything 'romance' related because the people who made it figured it wasn't a 'real' genre.

"I'm never going to pla-" That's fine. Let me play them and tell you about them instead. Just at least try to understand that there are huge gaps in our collective gaming knowledge, and that it's a shame games like these are untranslated.

Again, if you're wondering why I should spend time covering Haruka and why you should bother reading about it: Because English-language awareness is no reliable measure of a game's importance or success. Because sexism is still so rife in gaming we shove entire genres to the side as being "not real"

Great read, and very much agree, having weirdo games more easily available gives you a much broader perspective! Not 100% b/c of the small number companies involved, but Arcade Archives gives a neat picture of arcade gaming, next to classics like Qix you've got obscurities like Riot & Senkyu :D

It's a shame 'cause there are parts that work, and the story is pretty daring (the General Pepper fight especially) but as well as the game being such a chore to play 80% of the time (the on-rails sections are excellent), the voice acting for Fox and Falco especially is real rough, not enough emotion

The visual / sound feedback on shooting things is also really weak (except for when you send enemies flying with the Landmaster, that works well) and all this combines to make the on-foot segments really not fun. I see what they were going for- an all-out war scenario- but it didn't work for me.

You can tell in the final product as the open-arena, multi-vehicle segments are clearly repurposed multiplayer stages, and that wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so bloody *huge* and empty for a single player! Auto fire is in this rerelease but completely optional and also disabled for high score mode. Computer opponents are usually fallible and have set scores for you to beat that are doable. Also they're not entirely based on rapid fire as timing and reflexes are an important part of many of the events.

Happy to assist! I maintain a spreadsheet of all the current Arcade Archives releases, so if you're curious to see if something you're interested in is available, take a look! docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Tonight on the Gaming Hell Stream, we've done the SNES and N64 games, so let's move up to the Gamecube and play Star Fox Assault! www.twitch.tv/tepidsnake

Additionally, I wanted to emphasise that there were no home ports ~at the time~ for this game, so this is the first time you're able to play it at home on a console. Apologies if this has caused any confusion.

I have a tendency to use the word 'port' a bit liberally perhaps, and while Arcade Archives releases (as is my understanding) are emulations, they're (most of the time) a bit more accurate- Kangaroo and Wonder Momo were games that had problems in MAME but their ACA counterparts fix things.

Dialogue with him in Shadow Generations suggests he really was having this adventure while everything else was happening, I choose to believe he survived everything because he's Big and no-one can stop a huge cat who just wants to fish and sleep~

It's really good! Imagine if Track & Field was done with superhumans, so the events get considerably more over-the-top, such as smashing through blocks of ice instead of jumping over hurdles and the like~

Would that be the usual 'claimed by Victor Entertainment' stuff or is there something more specific about this one? From my limited experience streaming Namco ACA games, it'll usually pop up that it belongs to them but it never mutes it and lets it through nowadays.

There's something delightful about multiple replies to this being "I've never heard of this game before but it looks like it kicks ass" because, well, it does! If you've not played the original Numan Athletics, that's out on PS4 and Switch as well, so give it a try! www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzm4...

Arcade Archives releases are just individual games, but Numan Athletics was released on PS4 and Switch last year, so that's available right now!

It may delight you to know then that these are considered canon. and he really was on an adventure- in Shadow Generations, Big mentions that he passed by Shadow on the Space Colony ARK a few times while looking for Froggy, referencing these cameos!

After being announced and never released back in the '90s, the NES / Famicom port of Jaleco's Soldam is getting a physical cartridge release. What an exciting puzzle game! youtu.be/eMMLm09VNBE

I really figured we'd seen the last of Technōs on ACA years ago, but what a surprise! Jaleco and SNK have come back recently too. I'm kinda hoping we get some Sunsoft games again too, but we'll have to see, the exciting part of ACA is you never know what unexpected treasure you'll get!

This week's Arcade Archives game is Scrambled Egg by Technōs (their last ACA game was in 2016!) from 1983. Kick to crack the eggs open and save the baby chicks from the Sukiyaki Bros. while avoiding the hungry Tuna Head! Dreamwidth post! tepidsnake.dreamwidth.org/25157.html

*Anyway*, I'm not perfect myself but I always do my best to directly mention where I get information on-stream and on my lil' website. I don't think it's a gigantic ask for big creators to do the same.
