Shrew doesn’t quite have the connotations I’m looking for. Probably because of Shakespeare, shrew carries implication for me of a nagging wife. A relatively powerless woman who can only achieve her aim through nagging and scolding. In this instance, the character being insulted is powerful.

It's #BookQW and the word is 'idea'. In Daughters of Nicnevin, Mairead and Constance use magic to subtly influence men from the Black Watch. Out 11th November, pre-order now: www.flametreepublishing.com/daughters-of...

Book Cover - Daughters of Nicnevin by Shona Kinsella. Two women in 18th century highland dress stand back-to-back in the middle of a field. They are surrounded by the brooding presence of men made of straw. Text reads - Mairead repeated all of that to the men, pushing her will into the words, hear and obey echoing in her thoughts. She felt the suggestions sink into the minds of the younger two, but there was some resistance from their leader, some part of him that pushed back against her influence. Mairead pushed a little harder, repeating the instructions with more of her will pressing behind her words. This time, she felt the idea settle over the mind of the leader. Now she just had to persuade him that it was his own desire. But that might be better done indirectly. She stepped back beside Constance and leaned in to murmur, “I think they’re just about ready. When they start to seem a bit more alert, try to convince the leader to stay.” Constance gave her a sharp look. “But we want them to leave!” Mairead nodded. “We need him to think it’s his idea – and unless I’m wrong, he’s the type of man who will not accept being corrected by a woman.” “Clever.” Constance gave her an appraising look, as if seeing her in a new light.

It's #BookQW and the word is 'idea'. In the Heart of Winter, Brigit is given the honour of seeing the Cailleach's most treasured possession. Out now: www.flametreepublishing.com/the-heart-of...

Book Cover - The Heart of Winter by Shona Kinsella. A young woman with long, braided red hair, dressed in tartan, faces away from the viewer. She is in the middle of a winter landscape, but around her feet, vines and small yellow flowers bloom in profusion. Text reads - They stepped through the doorway together, the Cailleach using the candle to light another of those odd, oil-filled channels in the wall, and once more blue flames spread around the walls of a room, bringing light to a space that was far larger than it should be. The center of the room was dominated by a raised stone platform, with a walkway around each side. On the platform, was…well, Brigit had no idea what it was. A complex shape was formed from chunks of rock, sand, moss, grass and wood. She walked around the edges of the platform, tilting her head one way and then the other, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. The Cailleach stood beside the doorway, watching her. “What is it?” Brigit finally asked. “It is a living map,” the goddess answered. “It shows all of the lands where I hold dominion.”

Text on the graphic reads: Waterstones Argyle Street, Thursday 20th November, 7pm. Sam K Horton and Shona Kinsella, in conversation with Meg MacDonald

Ahhh my final author copies of A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence are here, with gorgeous cover design by Artscandare! Aren't they lovely? Of course I'm including a spine-shot to show just how chunky it is compared to the first novella in this series! 😍 books2read.com/honeymoonGrave #romancelandia

A fanned-out pile of paperback copies of Stephanie Burgis's A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, placed face-up. The illustrated cover shows the silhouette of an elegant traveling carriage over the title and a bat with wings outstretched underneath, all of it framed by apples and with mirrors at the top and the bottom of the image. A fanned-out pile of paperback copies of A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, on top of a few copies of A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience. The back cover text reads: Honeymoons don't typically take place in sinister secluded inns in the Black Forest. However, Margaret, Lady Riven, and her vampiric husband are hardly a typical couple. Unfortunately, their chosen retreat is full of lethal supernatural creatures who find Margaret’s arrival deeply unwelcome—and for all of her academic prowess, she’s infamously inept at making friends. Still, when a new threat appears in her own mirror, she realizes that the greatest danger is to her heart...and she’ll have to rely on a remarkable assortment of newfound allies to help her save the immortal vampire who holds it. A sparkling continuation of the Unexpected Adventures of Lady and Lord Riven. A pile of paperback copies of A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence and A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience, shown with the spines facing. A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence is over twice the length of the first novella in the series. Face-up paperback copies of A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience and A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, lying side by side on a dark blanket.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'pour' #BookQW Every wedding's at the mercy of the weather. Will Dan Mackmain face something equally unpredictable and impossible to control? The Green Man's Holiday - 30th October 2025 - from @wtpress.bsky.social For preorders wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those. Book extract reads: Out in the churchyard, Fin’s cousin Will was organising the wedding pictures. He’s a professional photographer and he didn’t hang about. For one thing, the weather forecast this morning had included the possibility of unexpected thunderstorms and sudden downpours. For the moment, white clouds were passing quickly overhead, though the breeze had a chilly edge as it tugged at Iris’s veil. That nuisance quickly died away. I saw Zan grin and wondered if she had him to thank for that. Maybe, maybe not. The Fenland has its own sylphs. They’re as inquisitive as Zan, and equally capable of masquerading as a human. I wouldn’t put it past one or two of them to try to join in the wedding. Only their eyes would give them away to somebody like me. When they blinked, I’d see solid icy blue, without white or pupil. If I was close enough to see it. That had been one good thing about me and Zan meeting people at the church door. I could be sure no one who wasn’t supposed to be there had sneaked into the ceremony. The reception would be a different matter.

It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'pour'. In The Jicker Man by Ben Mears, Ebadiah and his friends are taking the fight to their enemies. #BookQW wizardstowerpress.co...

Tonight we burn a gawper camp. It’s the one near their roadblock by the woods. Parking at the far edge of the neighbouring woodlands, we take the canister of Old Fisher’s Wick Grease and creep silently closer, hiding in the shadows. Unseen, we sneak to the fringe of the camp using the trees for cover, pour the whale oil around the outer edges of the gawpers’ great, domed tents in the dark. When every canopy we can reasonably reach has been fuelled, we light torches and scurry from tent to tent, setting the oil ablaze. Roach makes a sign in the air with a stroke of his hand and we hurry back to the truck. From there, we watch as chaos awakens across the camp, hear the rasping shrieks of the startled gawpers and see the gawper guards at the roadblock run to help their fellows.

Everything in this thread is so important. Criminal defence lawyers stand for each and every one of us in holding the state accountable, ensuring no one is convicted of or punished for a crime without due process. Is the system perfect? Absolutely not. But defence lawyers are essential

It's #BookQW and the word is pour. In The Heart of Winter, Brigit finds herself in the home of Aengus, god of summer, and person she is being forced to marry.

Book cover - a woman with long, braided red hair faces away from the viewer. She is wearing highland clothing. She is in a winter landscape, but around her feet, vines and flowers bloom. Text - The wall to her right was periodically interrupted by doors much like the one to the room she woke up in. The other side of the corridor held large windows that let sunlight pour in and illuminate the space. This building felt bright and airy, unlike the Cailleach’s home, which often seemed to hulk in on itself, with few windows and little light. Between the windows, hung wall hangings and tapestries 146 • SHONA KINSELLA and paintings. Everything she had seen here so far was designed to be beautiful as well as functional. Under other circumstances, she might have come to appreciate the beauty of the place. As she turned a corner at the end of the corridor, she noticed an odd trick of the light; one doorway almost glowed, although it did not lie in line of sight of any of the windows in the corridor. In fact, she could see nothing to explain the light on the door. Could this be where she would find Aengus? She stood outside the door for a moment, wondering whether she should knock, trying to figure out what she could possibly say which would make him see her as a person and not as an object.

It's #BookQW and this week the word is pour. In Daughters of Nicnevin, Mairead is using her skills to ease the passing of a friend and to help their loved ones.

Book cover - Two women in 18th century highland dress stand back-to-back in a field. They are surrounded by men made of straw. The atmosphere is brooding and tense, with a sense of threat. Text - “How did you and Lizzie start courting?” she asked, deflecting the conversation back to safer grounds. “Our fathers were elders in the church together and they were always pushing us together. So of course I wasn’t interested in her at all.” Mairead listened as Callum told her how they had eventually fallen in love and while he spoke, she absorbed the love and happiness that he shared so freely, storing it to later pour into the shawl she was knitting for his granddaughter, Bernadette, his final gift to her. His eyes drifted closed and his voice began to trail off. Mairead reached out her senses, feeling the vital part of Callum slipping further away. She leaned over and spoke softly, close to his ear. “You can go now. You’ve done enough. You can let go.”
