Great, thanks. I shall add it to my list.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't have all the versions available on CD - current tally is seven - but happy to nab more if / when I come across them. I was lucky enough to see SR and players in the late 1980s in Leeds at a festival. Sadly, M418M was not on the programme.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think so. On CD?
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
What I wanted to hear this morning was the Colin Currie version, but I couldn't find it as it was filed with the others! What started this whole thing off was stumbling across this Bang On A Can performance of it last night. youtu.be/kKO3IcvdWUQ?...
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It would be the same for me.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
The ECM version is the gold standard for me, though I accept that might only be the first one I heard (aside from a radio and TV broadcasts around that time. They all have something enjoyable and engaging about them.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
You can't have too many. I also have the Colin Currie one, but I couldn't find it this morning. I really need to get on top of my CD filing!
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
8 for me
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Great news, Joe. Well done! Looking forward to diving in.

Rupert is a handsome devil and no mistake
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It's as much The Beatles as it was on first release, only it sounds much better now, also benefiting from being de-Lynned compared to the original. I wasn't ever too keen on Real Love, but I was and am still besotted by 'Now And Then.'
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
The Bug is 9 years old today. By way of a celebration, he murdered and, as far as I can tell, ate most of a pigeon (pictures available on request). I'm not happy with him, but as you can tell, he's thoroughly repentant and has given me assurances it won't happen again. Happy birthday, The Bug.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sorry, I shan't attempt to change your mind on this weighty matter because I happen to agree with you.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
My attempt to give The Bug a fuss results in him issuing a cease and desist paw with immediate effect.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Essentially, it's library music. Pitched as such and minus the Daniken nonsense, it would probably be highly sought after by the collectors' fraternity
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Funnily enough, I did review the follow-up album to this one last year.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It's bland as fuck, but having never previously owned a copy, I felt I couldn't leave it there for £10.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep - it's a play-once and file job for me.

I nabbed this a couple of weeks ago for a tenner in Teignmouth, only because it features Bill Bruford on drums and thus fills a gap in my collection.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Hurrah!
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
The selection is pretty good as I recall. If that's the 2010 Esoteric edition of Softs, then it should have my sleeve notes with it. Other editions are available, however, so you may have been spared that particular ordeal.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Great haul.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Ouch! I have to say that despite appearances, The Bug was sweetness personified at the vet, allowing her to open his mouth and inspect his teeth without even a hiss. He only protested when getting into my son's car. Otherwise, he was an absolute star.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Slightly surprised to note that I have 5 of this Top 10

I’m not entirely certain The Bug has forgiven me for stuffing him in a cat box yesterday and hauling him off to the vet.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep that works!
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
The Bug usually comes and goes in and out of the house as he pleases, but he has a vet's appointment later today, so he's been confined to the house. As you can see, he's thrilled about this turn of events.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. I'm on my last lot of deadlines this week, so next week is perfect. Happy to fit in with your schedule.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
@andrewmale.bsky.social You probably have this covered but I'd nominate the Plugged Nickel gigs. I have tons of Davis CDs & LPs from all eras but push to shove this is the set I would grab in a fire.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Chicago’s tiny Plugged Nickel in 1965 hosted a terrific run of shows as Shorter and Hancock elegantly orbit Tony Williams’ meteoric cymbal work and Ron Carter's pulsing bass. Despite poor health, Miles' incandescent fireworks are pure joy on steroids. Oh, and it swings like the fucking clappers.

I know you love him madly so let’s journey far in to yesternow and help me decide which ten releases - live, studio and archive - should be included in @mojomagazine.bsky.social’s How To Buy Electric (era) Miles (Davis). Best comments, as ever, will be included in the mag.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
I knew when I took it in on this very day in 2018, it would come in handy. I took another snap a bit closer to the shore, but it's not as good as the first one.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It was rush hour
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It's got something of that autumnal melancholia about it that you alluded to earlier, I thought.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
I've been wanting to change the LP for over half an hour, but The Bug has fended off my attempts to do so by inflicting extreme and overwhelming violence with clinical precision.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
The best. John Marshall’s work on this is astounding
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Swoon. Sometime circa 1971 met a pal at the youth club then went back to his to listen to his older brother’s album collection. First up was Yusef Lateef’s Eastern Sounds. The second was this. Both accomplished by the obligatory red light bulb and joss sticks.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Taking a break from the editing to have a wig out with Man, Hawkwind, and the magnificent Brinsley Schwarz
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
If they ever reissue their back catalogue, I'm definitely up for writing the sleeve notes.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
In the nearly 70 years that I've been on the face of this planet, I've never had cause to use the words chamfered edge, but I still live in hope that someday. . .someday. . .

Not heard it in years! Nice to make its acquaintance again
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
This one is sourced from a cassette, but the restoration is very good indeed. I heard the original broadcast with the LSO at the time and have wanted to have a copy of it ever since. Very happy to have this.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
It's lovely - also available on CD as well.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
A new arrival in the office today - the orchestral Hergest Ridge featuring Steve Hillage on guitar. Originally broadcast on Radio Clyde in 1975, this is a lovely audio restoration that comes in a lavish tri-fold sleeve and a reproduction of the concert's programme booklet. Sounds & looks fab!
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh I know that shop. Oslo? Had a great couple of hours swooning about in there a few years ago. Enjoy!
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
The Bug has called in to the office for the first time in at least a week. Although fed and watered, he's clearly pissed off about the lack of treats. Sadly, despite him giving me the 'you're a big man, but I do this for a living' routine, the cupboard is bare.

Into yet another evening shift, this time in the company of the absurdly overlooked and underrated Darryl Way's Wolf.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Very good indeed. I should play that one as well.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
One of my all-time faves. Never fails to put a smile on my face.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes indeed. I was listening to that and Hisaishi's new recording of it as well. But I hadn't heard this version in a while, so I pulled it out to try and spark up some creative energy. He's good for that, Steve Reich. Always makes me feel better.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Work to do and in danger of flagging, but this one is helping raise my spirit
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Into the evening shift with this pick from the ECM collection. The previous owner had photocopied various articles, including this one written by Ken Hyder, no less, for Jazz Journal in 1978, which addresses the question: ECM - will it still be important ten years from now?
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, it's on the Apple label and very of its time.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Another one nabbed while I was in Teignmouth last week. Not a massive fan of this, but at £12 I couldn't leave it there.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Into the evening's work with this belter. I found it in Teignmouth's Folk Preservation Society shop last week. A snip at £15, it turns out it's also NM, so a proper bargain.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)

I'm currently operating a news blackout for that very reason. It's also depressing to watch VZ be made to kowtow before this regime.
Sid Smith (@sidsmith.bsky.social)
Last year, I had the pleasure of talking to Pye Hastings, Dave Sinclair & Geoffrey Richardson for the 60-page book accompanying this hefty 10LP box of live Caravan, which is out next week. Full details in the blurb on the YouTube video: youtu.be/-q_g-8CYLIA?...
