Trump has claimed as high as 15 trillion. To show how ridiculous of a lie this is, total government revenue is around $5 trillion. Even if tariffs rise to double the historical average, they might raise $3t over the next TEN YEARS. This doesn't even cover the $3.4t of debt added by the BBB.

He has less authority over FDA as head of CDC than in his current role as deputy HHS head. Changing this would also require Congress to overturn the Kefauver amendment passed in the 1960s. I also expect that a market-based approach to drug efficacy would be very unpopular.

Drug safety expert here, had to look up his full statements on FDA approval. The full context is that he wants FDA to approve drugs based on safety only and no longer require proof of efficacy. He wants the drug market to be like the supplement market.

I work in pharma, and Americans have no idea how many potential cures are at companies that have no revenue. The whole company exists because of government funding or a single round of private investment. Small biotechs are teetering on the edge of shutting down, and then those drugs are gone.
