I don’t always feel comfortable punting my book here but the reality is it helps sales and I badly want to get good quality info into the hands of dog guardians facing challenges. Here’s a video of Mika working on her puzzle toy to help things along. amzn.eu/d/iv3Iz4F

Mika showing off her people skills with her dad at a local cafe today. She often reacts to traffic, people particularly men, dogs(she’s not scared of dogs but excitement and lead frustration can kick in) and cyclists. Today she saw a lot of her triggers and had a clean run. Well done Mika 👍

This is Mika. I’m coming to the end of a three week stay with Mika. She has problems with guests in the house and with people out on walks. It was important for Mika and me to form a solid bond before making a start with training. This was only after a couple of hours together.

If you haven’t yet read my book “More Than Just A Dog”, it’s on sale on Amazon for the remarkable price of £10.77!! I know. Incredible right? 😁 In the past these opportunities don’t last long so grab it while you can…. Just sayin’ 😉 amzn.eu/d/3m9noFR

I would concur with Rory. Sheila. If all went well she would most likely stick close and/or “boomerang “ out and back. The problem is that she’s easily spooked at which point her default is to run and then hide.

My concern with this is social acceptability. Keeping Diane and Rory’s standing in the community. Sophie’s pro-social. This is excitement with a little barrier frustration thrown in. It’s easily fixed with “time outs” and teaching alternatives behaviours. It isn’t in fact about guarding/possession

There is never a day goes by that something doesn’t happen to make us appreciate our lives in north east Scotland. Yesterday, for the first time since we moved here five years ago, we saw a pod of Orca in the bay by the house. Still feeling thrilled and humbled by the experience today. 😄👌

I think if you close the paywall pop up it will give you access to the article but I’m not sure. But essentially the answer is that it depends on the dog. There are steps you can take ahead of time to check suitability and help your dog to take things in their stride.
Sociable Dog (@sociabledog.bsky.social) reply parent
Nothing better than a holiday sausage for a holidaying dog.
Sociable Dog (@sociabledog.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m glad that your dog enjoys his holidays
Sociable Dog (@sociabledog.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t think you will have anything to worry about Karen. If your collie loves the motorhome and continues to do so (and the holiday when you get there) then she will likely take a trip to France in her stride. Her living quarters (motor home) will provide ample familiarity. Not all dogs struggle.
Sociable Dog (@sociabledog.bsky.social)
I recently had a really interesting chat with Nick Duerden, the author of “People Who Like Dogs Like People Who Like Dogs” and freelance journalist, about taking your dog on holiday with you. Here is his article in today’s Guardian. Beautifully written. www.theguardian.com/travel/2025/...

Hi Take your time and build up to the actual clipping over time. Use an approach called desensitisation and counter-conditioning making every step a good experience for your dog. DS/CC is described in detail in the book.

I’m not a fan of acronyms but I have one for fearful dogs. You’re looking for A.C.E. A=anticipation. You want them to anticipate good things happening. C=curiosity.. curiosity breeds resilience and confidence. E=expectation. They expect good things to happen not bad. ACE job Team #sophiefromromania

I loved the book and have been following the advice for counter-conditioning for my 2 little Rommies, one reactive with strange dogs and the other who runs home. And I can promise everyone - it WORKS! It takes time, but we can let strange dogs walk past now so long as they aren't too close ❤️

More Than Just A Dog is available at many book retailers as well as online as an audio book (Amazon) or a Kindle edition. If you enjoy the book, please do leave a review. It helps in the promotion of the book and, my main objective, to get better information in front of dog guardians who need help.

We specialize in helping fearful dogs be they inclined to hide away like #sophiefromromania or behave aggressively to get the scary thing to go away. It's always important to remember that there are two clients, the dog and the people. This is the start of Chapter 10 of my book. youtu.be/EH62AzIIDG4

I am in awe of The Princess. She wants Sophie to love her so much but she understands completely that we need to do it steadily and deliberately. When she was asked to be a statue I’m not sure she even blinked. 👏
