I've been saying for 10 years that state parties needed to learn the art of helping people to a graceful exit. They could have named a state office building after Dianne Feinstein, did a bunch of speeches about how great she'd been for California, and how much we all love her, and helped her retire.

Every year, on Labor Day, I like to re-share this conversation I had with @erikloomis.bsky.social for VICE in 2018 about his excellent book "A History of America in Ten Strikes." Screenshot/excerpt below. Full Q&A here: www.vice.com/en/article/b...

Text that reads: So, to the Scott Walkers of the world who say—implicitly or explicitly—that unions are un-American, what do you say? That it’s just an absurdity. The idea that America and fundamentalist free-market capitalism are the exact same thing is a myth. But it’s something I’ve run into more than once in my life when giving talks to people: that criticizing capitalism as it exists is criticizing America. And that’s not even in a talk calling for socialism. As I say to people: There are many, many forms of capitalism, and in the US, especially with the incredibly pernicious influence of people like Ayn Rand on American intellectual life, today’s ideas of free-market capitalism are an inherently fundamentalist ideology, an extremist ideology of capitalism that brokers no regulation, and no basic social safety net. Which is, of course, where the Republican Party is trying to push us. We just have to break down this idea that somehow capitalism and America are the same thing. America is many different things. America may be capitalism, in part. But America is also the Civil Rights Movement. America is also a strong socialist tradition. America is also people standing up over 200 years to fight for justice.

A vast gulf exists between Trump’s authoritarian aspirations and rightwing propaganda about his omnipotence on the one hand - and the realities of a complex modern state and society on the other. And in that space, politics continues, possibilities to resist and push back very much still exist.

Being lawless does not make Trump omnipotent – nor can he just snap his fingers and make all his authoritarian desires a reality. America is in an acutely dangerous situation. But obscuring those distinctions is an act of defeatism that only serves the regime.

Trump only abides by contracts with the rich. Wall Street will celebrate this action. prospect.org/labor/2025-0...

Many people think life preservers preserve lives. Others disagree! P.S. Trump didn't write this. P.P.S. I for one won't mind Bobby Kennedy Jr. to rip himself apart.

If you're 60, 69.1% of all job growth since your birth occurred under Democratic administrations. If you're 45, that number is 74.7%. If you're under 28, the number is 100%. Happy Labor Day.

What's really going on is that the press corpse got their preferred candidate.

You all have every right to be skittish, and sounding the alarm. One party has declared war on you for simply being who you are, and the other party, with notable exceptions, has not stood up for you adequately, if at all.

"I'll never vote for you, no matter what" is not expressing "qualms".

It's never been my argument. My position has for years been "when somebody says that a candidate can't get their vote no matter what, that person should not then be surprised when the candidate takes them at their word and stops engaging with them." That's how I ended up in this conversation.
