Joseph Weizenbaum said “The myth of technological and political and social inevitability is a powerful tranquilizer of the conscience. Its service is to remove responsibility from the shoulders of everyone who truly believes in it. But in fact there are actors”

The president of the AFT, Randi Weingarten, said in an interview that she’s come to believe that AI will be as transformative as the printing press and that teachers should learn to use it. With limited government support for any large-scale training, she felt she had little choice but to turn to Silicon Valley. “Professional development done by teachers for teachers is actually the best thing to do,” she said, “but where are you going to find that money?” Daaiyah Bilal-Threats, senior director for national education policy at the NEA, characterized her union’s relationships with big tech companies around AI—it has worked with Google too—in part as a chance for teachers to influence product development. “It could be dangerous for them to be developing this technology without educator input,” she said.

To gauge how it’s “working,” one would have to be clear on what the actual work is, which is not helping to educate children but rather to imbed these systems in a way that they cannot be removed, establish them as a source of truth, and destabilize labor.

In the same way that ChatGPT outputs only have meaning because its users assign them meaning, Sam Altman's outputs only have meaning because a guileless press corps full of stenographers immediately rushes off to "interpret" them. "CEO said a thing" gets spun into "OpenAI has accomplished a thing."

Remember, when Sam Altman says shit like "future iterations of GPT will require fusion power" or "we will need to build data centers on the moon" he's not revealing an ambitious roadmap. He's doing marketing. Putting "OpenAI" and "moon base" in the same sentence is the only goal.
